A Smart Fan

So I got a free smart fan, and I’m looking forward to using it. I’m not into smart appliances at all, so being happy about a smart fan over another smart gadget is so silly to me. But I’ll actually use this, and it won’t sit in my closet or wait to be given away. Is there something you’d like to get a “smart” version of, that isn’t like going all out with a complete smart home?

That is something new to me, I haven't heard of smart fans until now. So much of what we have is smart. We have a wireless printer/scanner in another room, and if it were smart and I could turn it on/off with my voice command, that would be a great idea. But walking to that room isn't impossible either really. Our son bought a new ceiling fan for their bedroom today, so that Grandpa can go over tomorrow and install it. His wife is all about smart devices and now I will have to stay tuned to hear if this is just a replacement fan or a step up fan.

I never thought I’d get excited about getting something like a fan, but I hate having to get up to adjust something when I’ve finally found a comfortable position to sleep. So voice activated was very appealing. I think you are so far ahead of me technology wise I could take a class from you!

@AmbiePam You make me laugh. Our remote for the apple tv is voice activated, and we've had that for 8 years. Everything else has been added since then. I do wish that my robot vacuum and my pressure/slow cooker had voice activation. I do not want to see anything further on the voice technology in our vehicle. We buy VW now, and they are nice, but our Chev has a speaker almost over the rearview mirror, which was used for when we had OnStar. They still listen in, you can hear them at times. It is an invasion that I am very careful of. But then on other days, I will sing as loud and off tone as I can for them.

What does your smart fan do? Is it voice activated? We don't have any smart devices here. I don't like the thought of them listening to me mumble in my sleep or recording my voice for hackers to use to make me seem like I said things I didn't really say. I permanently disabled that app on our phones and nothing else here can listen to us.

It’s voice controlled. It’s not something I ever would have spent money on, but it’s definitely helpful being free. I sleep on my couch (mattress is worthless). Sometimes when I finally get comfortable it gets too hot or cold, and I don’t want to lose the comfortable position by adjusting the fan. With my back, a comfortable position is hard to find (and my couch is loads more comfortable than that awful mattress).

@AmbiePam I understand. I moved my fan to the foot of my bed, aiming it at my feet. My feet get hot before any other part of me and keeping them cool keeps the rest of me feeling comfortable. My mattress is also OLD and in need of replacing... (I bought this bed when I divorced my first wife when Pretty was 5 years old. She's 37 now. It has dips and some of the wiring is coming out on the sides of the mattress. We've talked about buying a new mattress for it but haven't had the extra money to do that yet. I want one like she bought for her bed a couple of years ago. It's a memory foam mattress and is comfortable.) Our couch is also comfortable to sleep on during the winter but the material is too hot during the summer for me to sleep comfortably on it. Lots of friends have fallen asleep on it over the years while watching television at our last house. While we still have the television, it's only hooked up to a couple of Pretty's gaming consoles now. We use our computers to watch programs, movies and YT videos on. Mine lives on the other side of my queen-sized mattress. Pretty's computer/laptops live on a desk that used to be mine at the other house.

I am not sure I want smart anything. My bedtime fan is within arm's reach and I can tilt it up or down.

I really resent how “picky” my body is. The fan has to blow here if my body is in this position, then my arm has to be in that position to get enough air here, and so on. As a kid, I laid down and just went to sleep!

It would be cool to have a smart fridge or smart thermostat. My thermostat is programmable..but definitely not the same as a smart one.

Taxes excluded, would you want to win the HGTV smart home they used to give away once a year?

What is so "smart" about it? I have a smart phone. I'm good with that.

It just turns on, off, lowers or raises levels on voice command. I’m excited about it for a silly reason. I sleep on my couch (my mattress is terrible), and sometimes at night I get too cold or too hot, but I don’t want to move because I “just” got comfortable. This way I can get my fan to keep the temperature perfect without having to move. Kind of like when you start to drift off, and then you remember you left a candle lit. You just hate to move when you finally got comfortable.

@AmbiePam I get it. I hope you love it. I have my Dyson fan on the bed next to me when no one else is here. *ahem* I miss having a ceiling fan but the Dyson does a great job.

I cannot say that I like smart appliances. I know that my new washing machine is "smart", but I did not install the app on my phone, I use it as she were "dumb".

@ambiepam To have a smart toilet would be the best. One that analyses what you deposit then gives you a printout that you can take to the doctor. And it would know when to flush, and not a moment too soon.

I had to read through the comments to make sure I knew what a 'smart' anything was! It can be annoying sometimes to have to stop what you're doing to adjust something.
