Oops, I did it again...but not like the song.

Some years back, I cut my finger terribly washing a sharp knife. I cut the tip of my left little finger about 3/4 of an inch off, it was (forgive me, not pleasant) just hanging there. Of course, at the time I lived about 10 miles from medical care, by myself. I knew I had to go for care as it would not stop bleeding...I wrapped it in a towel, then put my hand in a plastic bag and tied it on and drove myself to the ER. In that really small town, it's sort of iffy as to just what kind of doc you will get when you go there...luckily, I was fortunate and a doc who was a family friend was at the hospital, and he decided he could re-attach the end of it. It was painful of course, but eventually it did heal. The only bad part of the deal was that the nerve endings in that finger are messed up. It sometimes burns or tingles even after all these years. If it's not burning or tingling, it's rather numb on the end. I've gotten somewhat used to it, and adapted my typing, etc. Don't ask me why but today, I did it again! I was drying the knife I had used and it went into my finger through the drying cloth. Yes, I had to go get a few stitches. I didn't want to, it wasn't as bad as the other incident, but it just wouldn't stop bleeding. My son had a fit and said I had to go...he can't drive right now due to his illness, so I drove myself there, yes, with a clean towel and a plastic bag on it. He rode along because he was worried. Anyway, a few stitches and a bandage and it's all good now. Why didn't I learn my lesson from the first time?? The only excuse I can come up with is that I was in a hurry to get done with the dishes. I am no longer going to hand dry my sharp knives, I don't think. I will just let them air dry. Pinterest picture

I didn't want to go get stitches, but it just wouldn't stop bleeding, so I did. It's throbbing, but that's to be expected when a person gets stitches. I will survive, and hopefully be more careful in the future, thank you, Rakski.

@rakski I just took some Tylenol. I don’t like big pain meds and only use them when I have terrible pain from surgery or whatever, but this will fade as it’s only 5 stitches. Thank you!

Was it the same pinkie or the other hand. I'm sorry your cut yourself again and needed stitches. That sounds like it hurt a lot. Sending big hugs and healing thoughts and prayers your way!

No, this time it was the index finger of my right hand. I guess it was deeper than I thought it was, the doc said when he stitched it up. I felt like such a dork!!

Ouch! I think we have all had cuts from knives sometime during our lives. Maybe you need to slow down a bit, especially when using knives.

@celticeagle I have always been a hurry up person. I like to get things done and out of the way to steal a little time to do something else. Yep, I’m weird!

Ouch!! I feel bad for you that you had to go and get stitches but I guess it's good you didn't cut yourself as badly as the other time. Years ago I cut my thumb with similar results to your first accident and it is still misshapen and scarred. Hope your finger heals quickly

I understand. Such things happen when we carelessly do something like cleaning a sharp knife. Better use a brush while doing this.

Oh poor Marie, that must have really smarted! So glad you got it taken care of. And you were having such a nice day too! . I am so lucky, I have never had a serious injury with a knife. I am always really careful when I them..because something like that is the last thing I need. I have also heard all those stories about people getting small cuts, and ending up losing their arm or something due to Merca. (the bacteria) freaks me out..so I am especially careful with knives.

I haven’t even had a finger nick from a knife cut since the big one. I figured out last night that was 13 years ago. And then I went and did it again, luckily not as bad. I will be a lot more careful about knife usage for sure! Thank you, Snowy.

Ouch It does hurt. I do air dry my knife. Due to my personal belief, I respect knife a lot and will not use it when I am facing with lapse concentration. I also hold the belief that knife that injures people must be discarded....When I shop for knife and I found that none of the knife appeals to me, I will leave and go to another shop. I am weird I know.

I won’t ever discard these chef’s knives. They were something I wanted for a long time, I’ve had them for years and they still look brand new. They were expensive and a gift from my special aunt. But it’s ok if you feel differently about it, it doesn’t make you weird!

@MarieCoyle It is a practice that only I practice it seems. So far so good through. As long as I continue to respect the uses of knife, they will keep me safe.

I know why it happened like it did...the knives I use are chef's knives, I have had them for years. They last forever. Once in a blue moon, they have to be sharpened--and I had them sharpened by a friend who always does this for me. Just like last time...right after I had the knives sharpened, I cut my finger. I evidently did NOT learn my lesson the first time! Thank you, Lenore.
