Join us for a meal

From our dining table we can look out into the yard. We see the mail box, the road, the birdbath. We can see my hyacinth beans just goin to town. They are growing and twining rapidly.
The entire time we ate this evening we watched a hummingbird gorge himself on nectar from the purple bean plant. He/She left for a while, and then came back.
We do see lots of wildlife, both big and small around here. We almost always have some kind of bird join us for a meal so to speak. Either in the flowers or in the birdbaths. It is so much fun.

At my old house I only ever had one hummingbird that I saw, in thirty years. Bob's cousin gets them so thick you think you are being attacked. He and his wife live on a lake and have three feeders on their deck. I think they need water as much as food.

That is a good point. Things have been drier than usual here and being a desert you'd think it couldn't get drier and this year I've only seen 2 bees and 1 wasp, that too is unusual .... I like both because they pollinate which didn't happen this season

I see them often here, and I did when I lived in southern IL. as well. I know they are attracted to colorful flowers, but you have those!

We have squirrels here who like to get up close and personal sometimes.

Where my sister lived they were not allowed to put out bird feeders--"too messy". She would put raw peanuts in the top of a pot of soil. Crows and squirrels liked them. One squirrel would come and peer in the window if there were no nuts.

@GardenGerty I might put out a few for them if I see them scrounging for seeds and the like. I had one on the porch the other day looking for nibbles. if it is a cold winter like some are predicting. I may put out dryer fluff for them to insulate their nests.

@GardenGerty Yes, that's a good description. Delicate would suit it too.

I've noticed a lot of hummingbirds the last few days. I think they are migrating? Maybe. I'm glad you have such a nice view to enjoy.

Yes, this is the hummingbird migration. I do not put out feeders but try to have flowers. If you have feeders you need to keep them up until it is almost cold because evidently there are always some straggler.

I usually only see sparrows or crows in the back yard. This morning I watched a robin and a mockingbird catching bugs in the front yard for quite a while after the fog lifted around 9 am.

Yes, Robins will not come to seed feeders, they want the bugs and worms from the ground.

@GardenGerty I was listening to the two of them call to other birds, hoping more would come but none did.

@GardenGerty I'd like that. Sometimes I miss our rural property then I remember the ghastly nearest neighbors and don't miss it so much,

That's the beauty of having gardens. I have many fruit trees where I always see hummingbirds. It is said that by tradition if you see a hummingbird inside a house it is a sign of good luck.

Oh I wish I had fruit trees. I have not seen a hummingbird inside a house. It would be lucky. I had a mockingbird chase a cat inside a house when I lived in California.
