My nutty neighbor did it again.

I've spoken here about my neighbor, who buys things constantly--she is a wild shopaholic and likes to order things online as well. Often, this backfires and she gives it away when she discovers she doesn't like it. I have tried to gently tell her that she is wasting her money, and so have others, but evidently she doesn't listen, she doesn't care, or she has more money than any of us realize. She restrained herself for 2-3 weeks, I think. Today, she called and said ''I have something for you!'' I braced myself thinking, who in the world knows what it is this time, as often it is mass quantities of the same thing, usually food. I have routed a lot of the food to the local food pantry, as she has ordered ridiculous amounts of stuff in the past--50 lb. lots of rice, cases of this or that, etc. because--''It's on sale!!'' She fell for those expensive meals you can order online to be delivered, called Factor. The cheapest meals are $12.99, but most are $15.00...EACH. To put it in perspective, think of a frozen individual meal like a Stouffer's or some such brand. The difference is, Factor is fresh when delivered, and supposedly will last 7 days in your refrigerator, or you can freeze them. She brought 4 of the meals over here. She wanted me to take more, but I did not. I mistakenly thought since these were so expensive, they would be good. Wrong, wrong...think massive amounts of cumin, turmeric, pepper, etc. We cooked two of them, she gave us different types--one was a weird combination of mac and cheese with stewed beef pieces, with carrots on the side that were swimming in a very strange, extremely peppery sauce. It was a big no... we aren't that picky, but it was not very good. The other one was even more strange--African peanut curry with tofu, a very strange rice mixture loaded with yes, more cumin and turmeric and a hot pepper or two, which neither one of us can eat, as we are allergic to hot peppers. I put the other two in the freezer for now, until we get brave enough to try them. What a weird and strange way to waste money, but no matter what she can't seem to stop. She said she has tried 5 of them, all different, and hated all of them. So, it's not just us. I talked her into giving them to the food pantry, I know lots of people love hot and spicy foods, but we simply can't eat them here. I do hope she got her excess buying urges out of the way for a time, but who knows? She's a nice lady, very sweet and kind--but oh, can she ever go through money to buy things she doesn't need.

Those delivered meals are never good. A friend of us ordered them for a dinner, we tasted and nothing was good. They always add a lot of spices and weird ingredients, often also too much salt. I hope your neighbor stops wasting her money.

@MarieCoyle - I would never pay $ 15 for those meals. They add a lot of spices to mask the taste of poor ingredients.

I have no desire to try them. But of course the nutty neighbor did. She tries everything she hears about or hasn’t tried yet. You are spot on, Anna. Way overly spiced and not something I would ever want. Just strange. I cannot imagine anyone paying $15 for what basically amounts to a tv dinner portion of weirdness!

@LadyDuck The company promotes the meals as being fresh and healthy. I personally think they are terrible and a complete waste of money.

@MarieCoyle Even she might not be knowing how the food is? Or she is just distributing the food because of less price? But yes she has a kind of good heart no doubt.

@Mshafeeq She appears to have a shopping addiction. She buys things that she thinks will be good or are on sale, and buys mass quantities of stuff. Then she has no room for it and gives some of it away to anyone she can think of. She does this over and over again. Once she gave me 50 pounds of rice. I had to take it to the food pantry, she left it on my porch. Then she gave me 20 more pounds, she bought several HUNDRED pounds of rice. Enough for a city, good grief. Her heart is good, but she has no money sense at all.

Oh wow! Sounds like she has a serious shopping habit!! I'm glad to know those dinners are nasty. I always wonder about them. We used to do Hello Fresh for those trying weeks with lots of go, go, going. Those were okay, but still not worth the money.

@kareng It would be a lot cheaper and I’m sure tastier to just make a good dinner.

They are made by the same company, I think, that makes Hello Fresh. But definitely not worth the money at all. I would rather just toss something in the crock pot to come home to rather than throw money away on those dinners.

Poor woman needs a hobby. I wonder what would happen if she volunteered at the food pantry?

IF it wasn't spicy I would gladly gobble African peanut curry with tofu. I hope the food pantry will like your offerings.

I usually like tofu, and the ingredients weren't bad. It was simply highly over seasoned and super spicy, and I've never been able to eat really spicy foods. Like the son said, ''it burns all the way down, Mom!'' and it surely did!

@MarieCoyle That doesn't sound very good. Too salty and too spicy is not for me.

@sallypup Honestly, the food was overly salty and way too hot and spicy, I couldn't do it and neither could the son.

I think this sort of behaviour is now regarded as an illness but I'm not sure. It is so hard to help someone like this.

@MarieCoyle In a way, that's really wonderful as long as she can afford to do it. At least she didn't stuff all the socks in a cupboard.

@JudyEv Yes, she does share, and I know many appreciate it. She never seems to know where to take things to share, she asked me and another neighbor and we told her of the food pantries. She also asked me for a list of places to take clothing, etc. so I made her a list. She says it helps a lot, so hopefully she will continue to donate items unless she finally stops buying stuff...which I sadly don't think she will ever do. Her money seems endless. She lives fairly simply and is not a showy person, but she sure loves to buy things!

Judy, it really is. She just gets so happy over sales. One time last year she bought 300 pairs of socks. She kept a few, gave some away, and sent the majority of them to the homeless shelter. They always need warm socks in the winter.

Your neighbor may not have much money but she could have a lot of credit cards that she is maxing out. In other words, she may be in massive debt.

It’s an addiction that I really don’t understand. Yes, myself and several neighbors have tried nicely to suggest she simply donate either the money or all the stuff she buys to one of the food pantries here and she has been doing that sometimes. We’ve tried to be kind and help. It appears she has a serious shopping addiction.

@wolfgirl569 I have heard her mention that she had family that have tried to get her to stop the wild and unnecessary shopping, but evidently she still has money to spend. To me, it seems insane but we can’t stop her.

I do like a bargain myself but I truly think that your neighbour needs some help here. I’m also thinking about the amount of money she is spending …..surely her money will run out at some point ….then how will she live and pay her bills !

I’ve thought the same thing. But other than slowing down her crazy buying sprees somewhat, she still appears to have plenty of money. I have no idea, all I know is she spends like a madwoman!

I did Factor for a couple of months a few years ago. I enjoyed the meals. You get to pick the ones you want to receive so apparently she likes spicy food or just went with the default selection.

I think from what she said she just asked for a mixed up package. I bet they sent her every spicy and peppery thing they had, they are just way over the top with the salt and spice.
