Ah, here’s a blast from your past! And, for the second day in a row, we have a song that has both a pop and a country version! If it’s any surprise to you, I learned this song from the country version (by Billy Walker, and I’m counting on @LooeyVille ‘s hubby to remember him
), but this is the original. So enjoy…and, as is the theme this month for @rebelann , don’t dance too much.
Smoky Places - The Corsairs
To paraphrase Dylan Thomas, doo-wop did not go gentle into that good night.
Most of doo-wop’s popularity was gone by 1960, thanks to people like Elvis and Buddy Holly, but North Carolina brother act The Corsairs put a little of it into this song. And, waddaya know, it became their only top 40 hit! Maybe the audiences weren’t totally ready to give up on doo-wop, either.
The general theme of the song — adultery — made it perfect to be covered in country music later in the 60s.
I still love listening to older songs like this.
Smoky Places
Written by Abner Spector
Recorded by The Corsairs
Released as a single, 1961

Okay, then I won’t do a doo-wop countdown for you.

@porwest — hence the name: “do wop yourself upside the forehead.”

Sorry about that, had a myLot hiccup while posting this, and my Facebook song ended up here! I corrected the YouTube link. Thanks again.

Oh yes(sorry about that wrong link), that was the Bob Welch era. Great era for Fleetwood Mac.

You totally stumped Hubby. He doesn't know who Billy Walker is or this original version or this group or this song.

Before mine, too, but that country music cover introduced me to the song. I love this original version!

Not familiar with this one. Was surprised to see the American Bandstand footage.
