I have two Weather sites on my laptop; one that shows the National Weather and one that shows local weather conditions by the hour. I also have one Weather site on my phone that shows daily weather for my zip code.
The funny thing is they all show something slightly different and that made me giggle when I realized the differences this morning. The National Weather service shows that there is a 70% chance of rain today and we'll get about a half an inch total. The second site shows that there is a 99% chance of rain/storms mixed today and the total accumulation of rain will be around 1 1/8th inches today. The site on my phone says there is an 88% chance of rain today and the total accumulation may reach 3/4 of an inch.
How can three different sites all show differences like that for the same area?
We need the rain so whatever we get will be welcome.
Do you use/check different weather apps?

That happens a lot here, too. Usually, the hourly weather site gets that right but the other two claim it's sunny when we have solid cloud cover.
Yesterday, we had a pea-soup fog here and none of the sites showed that. I was glad I couldn't see well enough to drive. Pretty would have insisted on going to the grocery store in that and I hate driving in bad weather. (When it snows or ices, I tell her I'm not driving in it no matter how much she insists. Sometimes she tries crying to see if that will make me drive when I don't want to.)

@DaddyEvil - As we are only half mile from the Swiss border, I often check also the Swiss weather forecast, that seems to be more often wrong that our local forecast.
We went to Switzerland this morning, as I had to deliver personally some documents. It was foggy there, but it was not dense and by mid morning it was clear and sunny. I do not like to go out in the fog, my parents had a terrible car accident because of the fog and I am scared now.

@LadyDuck I totally understand that. I have had several near miss car accidents because of fog. I don't want to drive in bad weather.

I do not think any of them know that you watch all three together.

I'm sure they don't. But I do think each one is a different meteorologist giving his/her prediction for the weather that day.

True, or each site has their own meteorologist who gives their own predictions each day.

I don't trust the apps fully at all, I usually look out the windows and see what I think will happen.

That's a good question. We don't have a rain gauge to test that. It DID start storming at 6 am, like the local hourly prediction showed... I hope that one is the most accurate It's the one that is predicting over an inch of rain today.
I just woke up from a beautiful nap from listening to the rain against my bedroom windows.

@JudyEv I agree,,, It started raining again at 10 pm (It's 2:26 am now.) and is still sprinkling. We had thunder right over the house a little while ago that made me jump every time it boomed! Pretty yelled once when it sounded like the roof of the house was coming off!

True... It DID start storming here at 6 am, like the hourly prediction showed but the thermometer on the front porch shows it is chillier than predicted for this morning.

@Laurakemunto We don't own a television that can pick up channels anymore. Pretty and I watch shows online. Our television just has Pretty's gaming machines hooked up to it now.

Just the one internally installed in my laptop and phone. But we have a joke around here. If the weather bureau says it will rain, don't bring umbrellas because the opposite will happen. The gadgets used to forecast weather conditions are so old that they're no longer accurate, that's why.

@DaddyEvil You're right. I guess even the meteorologists here are incompetent. They have a vital job, so they should be held responsible. I totally get where you're coming from. It can definitely be frustrating when forecasts are off.
On the other hand, the weather is incredibly complex and constantly changing, so even with all the tech and data, it's not always predictable. That said, I do think the science has improved a lot over the years, even if it's not perfect yet.

@Jenaisle You're correct, too. Things can change fast and it can be difficult for someone to get everything right all the time. But you'd still think they could be held accountable instead of being rewarded for being wrong all the time.

It isn't that equipment is old in the US. It's that meteorologists give their opinions instead of just saying what the machines actually tell them. Each person decides how to "interpret" what the machines say.
Instead of having a basic level of understanding and being forced to adhere to that, meteorologists that make bad predictions for the weather are allowed to keep their jobs and still get paid. Any other profession, getting things wrong as often as they do would be fired and would have to get some other job to make a living.

We have a few different resources that we can check weather for our city.
Seldom do they all line up with the same forecast.
Today, just before 9am here, it is a lovely 14C according to the website that I consider to be most accurate.
However, I just got back home from the grocery store, and although technology can be faulty too, but the vehicle was registering the outdoor temperature at 16C, and on top of that, our digital weather station that measures the temperature here indicates it is 18C.
So, from this, I can deduct that the temperature, is much like politics, very subjective.

@DaddyEvil We took advantage of the beautiful weather and took a 4 km hike through a conservation area in the city.
We met alot of people, deep into the hiking area that were covered with sweat, as there was no breeze.

Thank you. It started storming here at 6 am, just like the hourly prediction said.
I assume we get conflicting reports for the weather because it is different meteorologists giving their predictions.

I have a weather app on my TV which I check 999 times a day. It has local radar and a 7-day forecast. The forecast is constantly changing. I will also look at Accuweather on my computer to get the big picture on where the rain is.

We have good storm tracking. We just don't have accurate estimates for the amount of rainfall in each area before it starts storming/raining.
@DaddyEvil (160221)

21 Sep
@jaylar Well, that's not possible. We can't tell how thick those clouds are or how high they're built up into the sky.
The amount of rain we got yesterday was a LOT less than any of the three apps predicted. Luckily, we're supposed to get rain/storms all week so, hopefully, we'll get enough rain to stay out of a drought.
I'm sorry that happened there. I hope emergency services kept all the people safe, at least.

@DaddyEvil we have very poor tracking. On Friday the 'rain' was so heavy it flooded highways, went into homes and businesses as if Noah was on his way.
There has to be a way to judge from the size of the clouds the amount of rain

Well, of course it would be... People expect the weather people to give their opinions on what the weather will be doing. Copying the weather given somewhere else makes it seem like you can't give your own.
