Off we go into the top ten! I wish to reiterate that, although @rebelann inspired this countdown with her “complaints” about songs being too danceable, these are not her ten favorites, they’re mine. So don’t blame her, blame me. I spent a lot of time roller skating to this one. #10: When I Need You - Leo Sayer Wow, I like this video. Just Leo Sayer walking, with the song playing over the footage. That’s how to make a video! Let me introduce you to the songwriters. Albert Hammond had a hit on his own called “It Never Rains in Southern California;” however, he also wrote the Hollies’ hit “The Air That I Breathe” (which was recorded by Phil Everly before the Hollies did it!). Carole Bayer Sager was married to Burt Bacharach at one point, and her list of credits include “Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do)” and “Midnight Blue,” as well as songs for the Broadway play They’re Playing Our Song. Leo Sayer is no slouch as a songwriter. He wrote Three Dog Night’s hit “The Show Must Go On,” and he co-wrote his other two big hits (“Long Tall Glasses [I Can Dance]” and “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing”). He didn’t have to write this love song about a man lonely for his love while he’s on tour. He just sang it…and sang it very well.
