Off we go into the top ten! I wish to reiterate that, although @rebelann inspired this countdown with her “complaints” about songs being too danceable, these are not her ten favorites, they’re mine. So don’t blame her, blame me.
I spent a lot of time roller skating to this one.
#10: When I Need You - Leo Sayer
Wow, I like this video. Just Leo Sayer walking, with the song playing over the footage. That’s how to make a video!
Let me introduce you to the songwriters. Albert Hammond had a hit on his own called “It Never Rains in Southern California;” however, he also wrote the Hollies’ hit “The Air That I Breathe” (which was recorded by Phil Everly before the Hollies did it!). Carole Bayer Sager was married to Burt Bacharach at one point, and her list of credits include “Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do)” and “Midnight Blue,” as well as songs for the Broadway play They’re Playing Our Song.
Leo Sayer is no slouch as a songwriter. He wrote Three Dog Night’s hit “The Show Must Go On,” and he co-wrote his other two big hits (“Long Tall Glasses [I Can Dance]” and “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing”). He didn’t have to write this love song about a man lonely for his love while he’s on tour. He just sang it…and sang it very well.
When I Need You
Written by Albert Hammond and Carole Bayer Sager

From Endless Flight, 1976

Great song!
I first saw Leo Sayer on Top of the Pops over here in the early 70’s, dressed as a clown, singing “The Show Must Go On”.
I’d never seen such a performance before and have been a fan ever since.
Not heard from him recently, but that’s how it goes. Last song I remember from him was “Orchard Road” and that seems ages ago.
Glad he made it over the pond, otherwise I’d be thinking you’ve missed out.

@FourWalls Never heard the Three Dog Night version. They weren’t big over here, and I can only recall one song of theirs - “Mama Told Me Not To Come”.
I know Leo Sayer has been based in Australia for a number of years now, so maybe @JudyEv has seen him in concert?

@Orson_Kart — your worthless trivia, “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)” was written by Randy Newman…who probably wasn’t big over there, either.

He didn’t have many hits here, “The Show Must Go On” was a hit for Three Dog Night not him. “More Than I Can Say” was his last big hit here, and that was 1981.

I’m surprised! It’s all about making bread.

Hard to remember all of these songs from all those years ago. I found an easy way: just forget everything else!

Never cared for Air Supply, honestly. I much prefer Bonnie Tyler’s version of “Making Love Out of Nothing At All.”

I don’t know. Russell Hitchcock’s hairdo in the 80s? Anyway, this predates the first Air Supply hit in the US by three years.

If anyone can pull it off, it’s you!! I know you enjoy every minute of every trip. I always relish reading the stories and seeing the pictures. You go where you want to and set your own pace, I don’t blame you for wanting to travel and enjoy new places.
