Dollar Tree is Losing More and More of my Business

I used to love Dollar Tree. That was back when everything was a dollar, and they actually had many offerings with good prices. But that began to change when they went to $1.25.
They also own Family Dollar, by the way.
It was not unusual for me to find some great bargains and spend $20 a shop when I was there.
But these days, the bargains are slim pickings, and most things, when you price compare, just aren't cheaper anymore. This especially became true when now when you walk in, nothing is just $1.25 anymore.
They have the "plus" section. Things range from $3 to $5. Some items are $10. Many items are now $1.50 and $1.75.
It's just not the same store, and when I walk in there now, little is actually a good price. I still find some items. But honestly, most of it is no longer a deal and is overpriced.
They have lost a ton of my business, unfortunately, and my average spend there is now more like $6-$10. But it seems every time I go in there, something else drops off my list of "deals."
Before you know it, Dollar Tree will be just like a Family Dollar or Dollar General. Overpriced and not worth going into. I find it sad. I really used to like the store.

It's such a bummer when a business "shoots themselves in the foot" like that.

There is an adage I like, which I believe holds true. "Every dollar we spend casts a vote for the world we want to live in." We, as consumers, vote with our wallets. And so, if we continue to spend at places that don't align with what we want?
We cast a vote that they should still exist, and be whatever they want to be, despite what we would prefer them to be.
I will vote with my wallet to say, "I am unhappy." If I am alone they win. If I am not, WE win.

@2ndchances24 All I have to do to cast my vote is not shop there and spend money. When a company loses enough market share...
Vote is received and tallied through lower sales figures and a weakened bottom line.

I was never a fan of any of the dollar stores, and never really shopped them. They were always too messy and disorganized for my liking.

We haven't shopped in the Dollar Tree in years and years... It's a shame things are getting overpriced there.

@porwest We bought the $1 candles, the toys with button batteries in them (and then threw the toys away), some of the candy and things like that.

The sad truth is that very little is economical anymore. Among items overpriced are toothpaste, mustards, hand soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, and so many more items. I really am sad about this, because they had a niché, and they've erased it.

It really is. I mean, on the one hand, I understand business well enough that I know a store like Dollar Tree has to operate in the environment that is, not necessarily what might be preferred. At the same time, the change that Dollar Tree has made has entirely changed its premise and business model, and to me, that makes it an entirely different store that has deviated from its entire reason for being.
What differentiated it from other similar stores then creates no differentiation at all now, and thus, it will be much more difficult for Dollar Tree to separate itself from the other stores and compete against them.
It has removed its own edge that was the key to their success.

I didn’t shop there too often but used to be a pretty good store. Not anymore.

@porwest wonder what made them go from all $1 to all $1.25 to now all sorts of prices.

@lovebuglena Inflation and the desire to stay in business. At the end of the day, as much as I want a bargain, I do understand that the business model they had before was not sustainable, and in order to remain in business, they had to change how they did business.

I agree with you. The one in my town used to be good when it truly was a Dollar Tree. Now, it is way lacking in products.

Yep, totally agree. I had a list of items I always bought there, true bargains. That list is getting smaller and smaller. It always felt like a treasure hunt sometimes, looking for whatever new items they brought in to buy at a great price.
Their supplier must have increased their price, and they have been forced to pass it on to the consumer. Bargain hunting has now become a part-time job!

That's the way life goes, you either have a choice to shop at
a big box store or a convenance store like $ stores close by.
But no matter WHERE you shop nothing is cheap any more
so you look for other things to take the place of what you
use to buy at a "cheaper price" or do without.
When we shop we always look for the cheapest to buy
we've always bought the generic cheapest products
cause at the end of the day nothing is cheap as it was
10 yrs ago, & name brand stuff, that's a joke in it's self.
