1973 - The Exorcist The Exorcist is a supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin and based on a novel and screenplay of the same name by William Peter Blatty. Actress Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), is starring in a film and rents a luxurious house in Georgetown, Washington D. C. During a party her 12-year-old daughter Regan (Linda Blair) feels unwell. She retires to her room; and her bed shakes. Over time Regan becomes violent and tests show no physical cause. After several instances of outrageous behavior, Chris is convinced that her daughter is possessed. It is decided that Regan needs an exorcism; and two priests are summoned (Max von Sydow plays one of the priests). The Exorcist was the highest-grossing R-rated film until 2017's It. There are wild special effects; and this movie is not for the faint of heart. People in the theaters were reported to be fainting and vomiting; and some theaters kept ambulances on call. Some cities attempted to ban the film or prevent children from viewing it. The Exorcist was the first horror film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Blatty won for Best Adapted Screenplay. The movie also won Best Sound. This movie has received 4 out of 4 stars and is very well done; however, view at your own risk!!! Photo Credit: Pixabay

I think that’s the first “modern day’ scary movie I watched. Before that it was the old B&W Dracula and Frankenstein movies. I was still a young teenager when this came out, so I don’t recall when I first watched it? Can’t believe it was released in 1973! Where does the time go?

After I found out some of the things that happened I never tried to see it. I love Ellen Burstyn. She is one of my favorites.

That’s one movie that “die-hard” horror fans say scared the bleep out of them. (And it was R-rated, so nobody under 17 was supposed to be in the movie theater to begin with! ) Supposedly based on a true story, believe it or not, the “Roland Doe” exorcism case in St. Louis in 1949.

My parents wouldn’t let me watch it when it first came out . I saw it some years later when I was 16. I watched it by myself and it was very scary to me. I shut my eyes several times. I am grateful that they didn’t let me see it at a very young age.

One of those movies that just got you at the time, and while when I have watched it recently, found it much campier than I remember, it's still one hell of a good flick and definitely a timeless classic. Pea soup anyone?
