Honestly, I can’t believe how well-remembered yesterday’s song was! Thanks for all the great comments, everyone! Today we’ll stay in the 70s, and a moog synthesizer (although it was a lot smaller by the time this song rolled around), and get back to the TV shows.
The Rockford Files - Mike Post
Mike Post may be the most frequently charted TV theme composer in history. This made the top ten. He also scored hits with the themes to Magnum P.I. and Hill Street Blues. Oh, and he co-wrote “Believe It Or Not,” the theme to The Greatest American Hero.
That’s a busy career! In the dictionary, under ubiquitous, it says “see Mike Post.”
In addition to the “hits,” there were theme songs to The A-Team, NewsRadio, Quantum Leap, and one of my underrated shows from the 70s, The White Shadow. He had so many theme songs that The Who did a song called “Mike Post Theme” on an album.
That was a good era for TV themes to become hits, too, with themes to Welcome Back, Kotter, Happy Days, and Lavern & Shirley being successful in the same era. I wish “Lou’s Blues,” the theme to Lou Grant, had been released as a single, because I loved that theme. But that’s another story.
This song is all over the place, with a rocking guitar, a synthesizer, and Herb Pedersen playing banjo????!!!!! It’s one of the great theme songs to one of the great shows of the 70s.

And who can forget those great phone messages at the opening!

This was a good song to skate to, not a dancing tune. Loved that TV show…great mix of drama and comedy. It always started with Rockford’s answering machine and a goofy message left before the theme song started playing.

@porwest -- yeah, those were the days. Some great theme songs back then, too.

I know. I watched the reboot of Night Court and there was no theme song, and it was less than 20 minutes of show (with the rest being commercials). Dang, I’m glad I don’t watch TV anymore!
There are a number of TV theme songs that were not released as singles, and as such they won’t be on this list. I used them on the TV theme songs list.

@FourWalls There was a time when you could be doing something else, have the TV on in the background, and know exactly what was on just based on the theme song.

I don’t know how well shows like this “translate” into other countries, because to me, they’re VERY “American.”

@FourWalls Some US shows are very popular here but, as I said, we were out of the picture for a while.

@FourWalls Do you like Shania Twain? I think she's probably too pop for you.

I was always a big fan of the Rockford Files. I recognize tv theme songs but never knew who composed them

They rarely got noticed unless it became a hit like this one.

Thought it was funny that The Who did that “Mike Post Theme.” But that shows how vast Post’s reach has been.
