A possum checks out our wood supply

We camped with our Bavarian friends in Dryandra forest not far from the farm where I grew up. We’ve camped there before and, once darkness falls, the little marsupials are likely to come visiting. Sure enough, once we’d settled down by the fire after dinner, a brushtail possum and a woylie came fossicking around for any scraps or crumbs that we might have dropped. The photo is of the possum. I think they are much prettier than the American opossum but of course I’m pretty biased. This one checked out our supply of wood. The photo doesn’t show his bushy tail but it’s there. Lol The underparts are a creamy white.

I agree, the Australian possum is a lot cuter. Ours look mangy in comparison.

I don't like their pointy faces much, not that they can help that. It's amazing how the babies hang off them though.

@JudyEv I agree, they can't help how they look. They look interesting carrying their babies around on their backs.

@DaddyEvil On their backs and not to mention hanging on their sides and underneath.

I agree 100% that your possum is way cuter than our American ones. Ours are definitely ugly in comparison. Your picture is cute of your possum checking out the wood.

Your possums sure look a lot different than ours! Yours are actually cute. Ours are scraggily looking.

@JudyEv It's funny though, no one here calls them opossums. Everyone just says possums. I actually live next to a creek called Possum Creek. And on the other side of me is another creek called Turkey Creek.

I always write yours up as 'opossums' so they don't associated quite so closely with our pretty possums!!

I find o'possums to be kinda cute. But I agree, the Australian version is much more appealing to the eye.

I don't know if ours were named after yours as there are no possums in the UK apparently.

@JudyEv I am not sure. I know our opossums are marsupials. I am pretty sure they are not in the same family though. I could be wrong. In other words, I think the words are not interchangeable either. For example, a possum is not an opossum, and an opossum is not a possum. If that makes sense. lol

Y’all’s possums are much cuter than ours. I wish possums (beneficial animals) and raccoons (“pests” to some) would exchange appearances.

I was really surprised when our Bavarian friends said they have raccoons in Bavaria and they are a pest there.
