I grew up in NW PA on the Great Lakes. That is ice fishing country. Due to climate change the bay isn't always suitable for ice fishing, but in days gone by it would freeze over every winter. I went ice fishing with my dad a couple of times. The first time I was about six and probably had 10 pairs of socks on plus my regular clothes boots and snowsuit. I don't recall fishing then just sat on my sled and watched.
I went again with him when I was 14. That time I caught a fish. It was cold, but exciting. That is the only fish I ever caught other than a few little ones..from"chumming" even though I have been fishing several times Any fishing or ice fishing for you?

Since it seldom snows in south Louisiana, I have never been fishing on water or ice.

My mom's parents had stocked ponds on their property. Family would fish. I liked to go and sit. I did not like to use live bait. I quit fishing when they made the rule that if you caught something you had to kill and clean it. I had caught a few things over the years.

You have to use the right bait for what you are fishing for

@snowy22315 I had the bait bites but it left the hook before I can bring it up to the shore.

Yes, I have been ice fishing. With my Dad in Alaska(I was very young and wrapped up as you describe!) with one of the grandfather's on Sunset Lake, on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In Canada once or twice, but I cannot recall the location exactly. On Sunset Lake, one of the uncles had a fishing shack (think Grumpy Old Men, without the music!) so even though it was very cold, it helped to be out of the wind in the shack. I recall that we usually caught walleye, perch, and pike for the most part.

Yeah, everybody who ice fishes a lot seems to have a shanty. I was talking down below..about a funny home improvement where they made the ice hole in the shanty too large.

Haha, I read that and immediately pictured the shanty tumbling in the ice hole!

Wow that is such a great experience. I have never gone fishing. As a child, I used to hate the fishy smell...I still do lol. I like cooked fish though

I doubt anything freezes solid enough long enough for you to ice fish there. It is a Northern thing.

It's different. The operative word though is cold. In areas where people ice fish a lot they have shanty's on the ice. There is a really funny home improvement episode where they make the hole they cut in the ice too big, and equipment starts falling in, and maybe a person..
