Cadillac Ranch

So on our last day, we stayed in Amarillo, Texas, where we stopped to take a picture of the Cadillac Ranch. It’s 10 Cadillacs buried nose deep in a field; basically a public art installation. I wish I’d taken a wider picture of all ten, but you get the idea from the picture. A truck sits nearby, and sells spray paint for anyone who wants to tag them (they also sell water). We’d been there before, but I hadn’t taken a picture years ago. I believe it’s been there since 1974. Do you guys like unusual art installations? Would you have spent the $7 on spray paint (you can also bring your own).

That's cool, are they all buried in the same manner Infront of each other?

Hey, I’ve been there! Just this year, too! Blasting Springsteen’s song! I think it’s pretty interesting culture/art exhibit. It’s always changing. Go back in a year and it’ll look different because the colors will have changed due to the constant “updating.” Having said that, I did like the “original” configuration of just the Caddies without the graffiti. Can’t have it both ways, I know. Anyway, I’m glad you got to stop there and enjoy it!

Yeah, I wish I had seen it before there was any spray paint, but it’s still cool to me too.

I have also been there years ago, but I did not take pictures and I did not paint.

I didn’t have the inclination to paint. It sounded like a good recipe to get messed up clothing.

@AmbiePam - I am sure that this is exactly what would have happened.

@AmbiePam We stopped there and the kids wanted to paint. When we were there, they didn't charge for the paint at all. I planned ahead, I knew they would want to paint there, so I had some huge old t-shirts in the car they wore over their clothes and then we tossed them--they were worn out anyway. But I didn't paint, I just watched!

No, Pretty and I just looked when we were there. It looks like the kids were chilly waiting on you to snap the picture.

It was 60 degrees, but there was a slight breeze. I had no intention of getting a picture, but my sister wanted one, and didn’t want to get out of the car. So I made the trek with the kids. Hudson and Annelyn were happy to do it, but Amyra was decidedly NOT. I mean, we were all on our last leg by that time.

@AmbiePam That's not a bad temp but yeah, I wouldn't have stopped on the way home. I'm always exhausted by the end of a trip and just want to get home and go to bed.

That certainly is interesting and not anything I've ever seen. I'm not very artsy but I might spend the $7 to just have the experience. The kids look happy to be there. Did they try their hands at painting?

They didn’t that time because the last time they were there they had spray painted. I kind of wanted to try it, but I didn’t want to hold anyone up.

@AmbiePam probably an all or no one kind of thing. Certainly does sound like fun though. Texas is a state I'd love to visit one day and of course Oklahoma to see you

Hey, I've been there! But it's been years and years. When we were there, we were more entertained by the ''attendant'' than the cars. It was this old hippie guy...and honestly I think he had either smoked too much stuff or messed up his head. He talked non stop, claimed this and that celebrity had owned this car or that car, etc...babbled on and on and never even seemed to take a breath. When we finally got back in the car and left, he was still standing there...talking away to the cars!

@AmbiePam He was talking about 100 miles and hour...you get the drift here. I wonder if he worked there like he said, or he was just there pretending, but hey...I do have to say he was memorable!

Actually, we do! It's that place where my friend Rob and I occasionally hike. It's called the Berkekey Bulb, and there's all sorts of junk art out there.

Have you ever posted pictures from that location? I remember you showing art made with driftwood (I believe), and that was pretty cool.
