One More Year

Do you guys remember me talking about my dad deciding to retire at the end of January 2026? He finally told the church board, and they told him they really wanted him to stay. So, he agreed to one more year. That’s close to his plan he’s always had to retire at 72 since next year he’ll be 71 years old.
I have to tell you, I’m thrilled. I knew they wouldn’t want him to retire, but I wasn’t sure they could talk him into staying. But deep down, I know he loves those people so much he’d hate to leave. So they decided he’d work full time one more year, and afterward when they call a new pastor, he’ll stay on part time.
Is there anyone here who didn’t want to retire? I know sometimes bad health forces a person into retirement.

@MarieCoyle If I was still married I'd take early retirement after the end of next year and take the hit on my pension. Not an option now.

I am... mostly... enjoying retirement. I would, of course, have preferred it not to happen the way it did but...

It sounds like it will work out pretty perfect for your dad.

That's sweet that he is so loved by his people that they want to keep him as long as possible.

I understand his feelings about it all, but I think he should have said he wanted to retire-and maybe have some free time to do other things. But it’s his choice of course, and what matters is that he is happy with the decision he made.
