One More Year

Do you guys remember me talking about my dad deciding to retire at the end of January 2026? He finally told the church board, and they told him they really wanted him to stay. So, he agreed to one more year. That’s close to his plan he’s always had to retire at 72 since next year he’ll be 71 years old. I have to tell you, I’m thrilled. I knew they wouldn’t want him to retire, but I wasn’t sure they could talk him into staying. But deep down, I know he loves those people so much he’d hate to leave. So they decided he’d work full time one more year, and afterward when they call a new pastor, he’ll stay on part time. Is there anyone here who didn’t want to retire? I know sometimes bad health forces a person into retirement.

Girl, if I dealt with what you did, I’d feel the same way.

I have several teacher friends who suffered burn out so badly, they do other work now. And I know two of them do online tutoring which they love.

@MarieCoyle If I was still married I'd take early retirement after the end of next year and take the hit on my pension. Not an option now.

I am... mostly... enjoying retirement. I would, of course, have preferred it not to happen the way it did but...

I think it really does keep you younger. I do worry about you though. It sounds like you work really hard.

They really, really love your dad! Well, I guess that gives your dad and the church to take a year to truly prepare and transition into his retirement. Easing into it may just be the best thing. I will never retire from my roll as mom . But I am trying to think how I can enter the workforce (sort of) again. Maybe I can work and play at the same time . . . have my cake and eat it too .

He is that, and I knew they wouldn’t want him to retire. I don’t think he had any clue they’d try so hard to keep him.

We had a friend who was scared stiff (her words) of retiring. But by the time she retired at, I think, 68, she was more than ready. She'd was worried about being bored as she is on her own but her life is full of all sorts of activities and she is very happy with her life.

That’s wonderful! I think it’s imperative we find things to keep our minds and even our bodies, active.

Don't have enough money to retire if I was old enough.

That's sweet that he is so loved by his people that they want to keep him as long as possible.

I am glad he will stay one more year and later stay on part time. I was very glad to retire and to have time to do what I really loved to do.

I understand his feelings about it all, but I think he should have said he wanted to retire-and maybe have some free time to do other things. But it’s his choice of course, and what matters is that he is happy with the decision he made.
