Fun frugal food

Well, with the tariffs and all, avocados are pricey. I have not been buying them at all. Often when I do buy them they are not great quality. We shopped a tiny bit the other day, and I literally haunt the mark down sections at my store. They mark down fresh produce, and that is often when I buy it, or if it is on sale. I got some romaine lettuce, (marked down) then went to the shelf where they put non refrigerated mark down produce. I saw two bags of cherry tomatoes and salad tomatoes. I wanted the tomatoes. It just so happens that there were also avocados in the bags, and one HUGE onion. So, for three dollars I made about four cups of guacamole. The avocados actually were perfect, not stringy or over ripe. Just small, but there were five of them. I still have tomatoes left for salads, that came from that same three dollar purchase. Yes, I get excited about guacamole. So that is part of what I ate for supper yesterday.

There is a grocery store in my town that has a rack in the produce section that is marked down for vegetables that are getting a tiny bit old. Recently I found three good tomatoes that were a good deal there.

The cost of living is just insane. strike the deals while they are hot.

I used to feel self conscious about buying all the markdown stuff, but not anymore.

@GardenGerty I'm glad you don't. I've bought marked down food and it's perfectly fine.

Hey, that’s a great price, and guacamole is a good reason for me to be excited.

You are right on that. I was not expecting them to be good at all. They were perfect.

I haven't seen avocados in our Walmart in a couple of years. I've never seen a mark-down section for veggies here.

This is in a Dillons. Walmart trashes their expiring things, likely. I know returned clothes when I worked there were deliberately damaged so people could not get it from the dump. What WM would say was that they did not want to be known as the "cheap store".I do buy clothes off their clearance racks, though.

@GardenGerty True, they threw out bananas if they started getting spots. I saw them fire one employee for eating a banana when he was supposed to be dumping them in the trash compactor. We buy clothes off the clearance racks. Walmart IS usually a cheap store, though. They LIKE to be known as the low-price leader.

I can't stand store tomatoes. I made deviled eggs for our protein tonight. I used a ripe avocado instead of mayo for the filling.

These were not too bad because they were the kind that were "on the vine".Avocado is yummy for lots of things.

I bought avocados at our local grocery store at 80 cents each and they were very good. Those coming from south America are the best.
