What Is New Year's to Me

The last few years had and still has its ups and downs, and I learned a lot, cried a lot, and not feeling 2026 is my year. I've said that for several years, and lost hope expecting things will magically get better. I'm ready to take on opportunities, not afraid of challenges, and pretty good at survival. I try to get excited about small things, have meaningful connections, and I’m hoping for progress in this house ordeal. But, I'm also taking chaos into a new year. I am learning to ignore those who say dismissive statements when confiding for support. "It will be OK" "You need to give it to God more" "At least you...." and "You're fine." Those statements shut down conversation and are not positive. I also believe blood does not equal family. I'm growing and taking that into the new year. I also don't celebrate getting one year older. It means I know my morality much better at age 66 (67 in May), than I did at age 40 and before. Do you celebrate New Year's. I'll just be home. Gone are those days of an excuse to go dancing. This photo is of Shoalwater Bay, outside of Tokeland, WA. I took it yesterday coming back from Westport and Grayland. It was a beautiful day there, though cold.

We haven't celebrated the New Year in years... Too many drunks on the road for me to feel safe. We stay home. She plays games with friends online and I talk on myLot and read my books. The picture is beautiful but I could feel the cold seeping through my laptop! Friends are the family you get to choose! (I hope I've never shut down our conversations with some annoying inanity.)

You have never shut down a conversation. I know some may use the ''at least' not meaning to, but I've come across many who do. It was so cold yesterday, ice was still on my windows at 12:30pm! It's warming today with the rain. Happy New Year!

Loretta, your picture is so beautiful. It makes me feel peaceful just to look at it. As hard as I try, the words don’t always come out right. We all have that happen at times. You are in a hard situation and so is your son. Nothing happened in a timely manner and it certainly wasn’t for lack of planning. I do wish that there was a way for you to be warmer. I know it’s really hard to be cold for hours on end.

We can get some pretty skies here when the sun teases us. I have said words I wish I could take back. Many say at least in good context, but many don't as well. If I share how cold I am and everything is molding from wet so have to keep on it every day, I was told at least I have a roof and should be happy about that and then changes the subject, dismissing I am miserable. I get it, not all want to hear my drama and I don't constantly complain. But, friends should listen to each other when in need, and not dismiss.

@MarieCoyle I sound so dire but I am not always sitting here miserable. I laugh, read, and do things to pass time. Watching them work yesterday gave me new hope.

@noni1959 It’s pretty hard to be thankful when you are freezing and exhausted. Everyone I know would struggle under such conditions! And yes, friends should listen. It’s sad when they don’t.

Let me tell you this-- I don't believe in God. I hate that phrase: "Give it to God". I respect those who do believe in him and never put him down unless asked directly for my views. Just interacting with you here as much as I have recently, I know you to be a strong person. Life has taught me that we won't always get just what we want but we will get what we need when we need it. That's just how life works. Beautiful photo.

@noni1959 .......Religious people quite often are very judgmental. Just one more reason I don't believe. I agree that people can believe anything they want but some want us to believe as they do. I feel sorry for them. Life is just too short.

I believe in God but don't push it at anyone. I am quiet with it, and I lost a lot of faith. I stopped talking to a long term prior friend since she continuously was telling me I'm not giving it to God and that is why I am living how I am. She was very judgmental. My son is an agnostic atheist. His ex-wife is a witch. But, we all are very respectful to each other. We can believe anything we want, but so many want to mold us into them. I'm a survivor and many times think I'm weak. I know I can be strong willed and stubborn.

@celticeagle I agree. I don't do religion. I figure whether someone believes or not, good morals, don't kill, steal, etc. applies to us all.

I do plan on celebrating New Year's, but I don't really have any great plans for 2026. To me, it will just be another year. There will be good days, there will be bad days. But I will make the most of each and every situation I'm faced with. I love your photo. It would bring me much solitude if I were there and could just sit and watch the water for hours...

@noni1959 Happy New Year’s Eve! There’s nothing more I love than to just sit by the water and watch, whether it’s people, boats, clouds, etc.

@moffittjc On the property, I can see the river that comes in from the bay. Sometimes, I go to sit by it and watch the little fishing boats coming in.

This is so perfectly said. I am drawn to water and it helps calm me. Before moving here the end of June, I lived two blocks from the roaring ocean. I'd drive onto the beach and just watch. The river here leads a couple miles down to the bay and then into the ocean. I drove yesterday to the port (half a mile), and watched fishing boats. Happy New Year!

@TheHorse We have quite a few very old cemeteries I want to explore. Soon as the weather allows me to get out without mud bogging, I'm going to begin going.

I think we'll be in bed well before midnight but we are sharing the evening with a single friend who doesn't really like being on her own on New Year's Eve. We'll probably play cards or some board games.

That sounds like a great New Years. I stayed off social media for a few days. It was helpful to reset. My evening was listening to the fireworks in the distance and reading.

The photo is beautiful. I haven’t done anything for New Year’s since I was a teen and our church youth group went downtown to watch the fireworks. We saw the fireworks, and we also saw a lot of drunk people throwing up. Not my idea of a good time. I’ll be at home with my dog, probably watching a college football game until close to midnight. People mean well, don’t they. Or at least that’s what I tell myself when someone says something insensitive. It’s okay to not be okay.

It boggles my mind some thing New Years celebrating is getting sickly drunk. I believe the last time I went out for New Years, my fiancé at the time went dancing and paid for tickets to be there. It was a good crowd, I stayed sober and a good thing, was only three blocks from home so we walked to avoid drunks on the road. Some times, people say at least in kind. It's the ones that use it to compare or tell a person who is feeling bad, they shouldn't be. It's hurtful.

Its hard, but we need to keep moving. I also havesentiments, but I just cling to God and believe that He is a promise keeper, I always argue with Him, but I choose to believe at the end of the day, I just don't want to lose my grip to the one who is eternal and keep sending joy in my heart even though I am in the middle of pain and chaotic circumstances.

We do not celebrate New Year's from ages. We have a normal dinner and then go to sleep. This year my husband does not even feel very well, so for sure we will be in bed when New Year comes. Beautiful photo.

@LadyDuck That sounds like a nice lovely day out. I have never been to an Aldi and want to some day. There aren't any in Oregon or Washington so seems to be a Eastern or mid state store.

Lovely photo. I tend to do zip on New Years day. Four years ago I was packing to move Southwest. I was crying yet excited about leaving the sagebrush country. We've had too many health scares since then. I'm glad we are nearer docs and green. I hope you do have a better year ahead.

I stayed off the internet and read. I made a good chicken meal and we listened to fireworks in the distance. I thought we'd see some over the Willapa, but it was held down in South Bend. I hope you have a better year too.

Beautiful picture. I didn't really celebrate. I did get cat treats if that counts. I came back home on Dec. 30th. {I was in New Jersey.} So I went to bed early, but my boyfriend texted me.

I will be home watching the ball drop tonight. My husband passed away in January; so 2025 was not a good year for me. That's a lovely photo. Have a good New Year's Eve.
