Our first strawberry

As well as two tomato plants that have fruit on them, we also have a strawberry plant. So far it has one strawberry that is colouring up and several more on the way. However, I don’t think I’ll be making strawberry jam (jelly) for a while yet. It’s not so hot here today; only 32C. There is definitely no snow around! Stay warm if it’s cold and cool if it’s not.

I used to grow strawberries at our last house. I planted some here but they didn't survive and I've not tried to grow them again. I hope yours thrive and you'll get enough to make preserves with them, eventually. It's always better when it's homemade.

Once something doesn't thrive it puts you off trying it again. Next year I might buy several plants.

I remember while growing up I used to fetch wild berries from the forest while having some adventure with my cousins and grandmother

That would be fun. We have wild blackberries here but not wild strawberries.

That’s something I am curious to plant but our climate isn’t considered not ideal for them to grow because they tend to be typical for cooler climates. We do have them in the northern provinces where the climate is way colder than where we are.

@JudyEv Yeah but l heard that there’s this variety that it can be grown in temperate climates but they do have smaller fruit than tge ones grown in colder places. I haven’t seen one so far.

@rsa101 The very big fruits didn't used to have a very good flavour but they are better nowadays.

I can imagine it might be too hot there for them.

I grew strawberries one time. They were good, but would have been so much cheaper getting them in the super market.

The plant wasn't very expensive but I do fertilise them. It's not going to produce enough to make much difference but it's fun to see them ripening etc.

@JudyEv We get wild strawberries here but the wild bunnies eat them up soon as they start getting ripe.

I guess I should have bought more than one plant but it's more for the pleasure of growing them than providing enough for jam.

I'll take 32C! There are parts of Alaska that would like 32F (0C) right now!

It's funny how sometimes our temperatures are the same apart from the 'C' or 'F'.

@JudyEv It's still cold. I put warm water out for the birds a couple of hours ago and I can see that it has now frozen over.

8C sounds very cold to me. It is certainly summery here; almost too much so.

I hope your plant brings you lots of delicious strawberries. Yum!! Our week looks like the temperatures will be above freezing so hopefully it will melt the last of the snow that's still on the ground.
