It's been a long, long time since I did one of these.
I am hoping to make a convert of some of you with this song. I'm sure you remember The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel? This is The Sound of Silence by the heavy metal band Disturbed. I don't like heavy metal music. Trust me. This song is not heavy metal. It was a crossover hit from the group's Immortalized album released in 2015. It was their highest ranked single on the Billboard Hot 100 at #42.
I'm hoping you will agree that lead singer David Draiman's rendition of this 60s classic fits the lyrics much better. His dark, powerful, angry and emotional delivery gives you goose bumps.
I hope you will listen to the whole track. At 1 minute and 48 seconds you will start to hear a change in Draiman's voice. A heavy metal artist with piercings shouldn't sound like this!!! If you were to watch one of the group's other videos, you wouldn't believe that Draiman is the same guy!!!
The 4-piece band was founded in 1994 and consists of Draiman as lead singer, Dan Donegan on guitar, Mike Wengren on drums and John Moyer on bass. They have sold over 17 million records worldwide, have 2 Grammy nominations and singles from all of their 8 albums reached the top 10 on the Mainstream Rock chart.
I watched 5 YouTube videos in which vocal coaches, an opera singer, etc. listened and watched the music video or a live performance for the first time...they were all blown away. Quotes: "...wasn't the sound I was expecting", "The first 1 minute and 48 seconds is leading up to something big" and "My first listen left me breathless".
I hope you will enjoy the music video below; and I hope that some of you will have a new favorite version of The Sound of Silence. Thanks to cousin #2 for turning me on to this awesome song.

@LindaOHio Actually, having looked at some of their other videos, I rather like some of their other stuff too, thanks for the introduction!

I have heard their version of the song and liked it... never cared for the original though...but Disturbed's version is really good.

I liked the original version when I heard it. The harmonies of Simon and Garfunkel always had a catchiness. Hearing Disturbed perform it perked up my ears in a good way. Not bad for a cover song. I give it high marks.

It is a dramatic rendering and very good, but I am not a convert. Possibly because the original is tied to many personal memories. I do think that the 'sound of silence' continues to grow with our preoccupation with screens and lack of compassion and empathy.

A good rendition indeed. Haven't heard this one before. It does reach a good place.

That is a stinking AMAZING version of that song. Absolutely not what you’d expect, and it drives the lyrics home.

It's a very good version of the song but my favorite is still Simon and Garfunkel.

I will admit it's powerful. Not what I was expecting. I love this song. I love the original. I heard another version a couple of years ago, and didn't like that one. This one is good.

Nope, never heard of it, but I am glad to see how you look so inspired to write something cool today because of that song.
