What are they using?

Yeah, this has to do with the snowstorm bearing down in 35 states. I thought they still rolled out the salt and sand mixture to protect people on the roads, but here, they spread salt brine and beet juice. Yes, beet juice! The high sugar content helps form a thin film that helps prevent skidding. I’m not sure how long they’ve been using beet juice as well as salt, but apparently 5% of the mixture is beet juice.
@LindaOHio , there is finally a reason to like beets!

They have been using a salt brine mixture on the highways here for a few years. They do that before the storm starts and then it's salt after the storm gets going.

I was/am listening to the news and according to NYC they are out there brining the streets now though there is supposed to be some rain first which will wash a lot of it away. If I heard correctly they will start putting down salt after 2 inches of snow have accumulated.

I read a little about this earlier this year. I am not sure if we have it though.

That's interesting. I did hear about something strange being mixed in with the salt for the roads, but can't remember what it was..

Missouri and Michigan also use a mixture (20% beet juice with 80% salt water) on the roads. I've read it drops the freezing temp from about -25F to -40F and the sugar helps bond to the roads and makes tires "sticky" so they grip the pavement better. Of course, I don't know if any of that is true but it's what the road departments are saying about the mixture.
We started getting sleet here around 1 pm but it's just small amounts so far... I'd rather have snow than sleet.

lol I've never heard of the beet juice; and I worked for Morton Salt for 10 years...that was a while ago though. The beet juice could be something new.

We don't have snowstorm. But this is a bit information for me on how to prevent car from skidding in a snow-filled road.

Yes our brine also contains beet juice I think. Salt and sand are old-school methods.
