Freezing Pipes

There is a video circulating online that one of our Mylotters asked me about. It is of the ceiling of one of our local hotels caving in. You see leaking water, and then all of a sudden it just collapses. It’s of the Embassy Suites, and it is very close to me, and right down the street from my dad. It’s a very nice hotel so that must have been a shock. Freezing pipes? Maybe, but they think it might be something else.
Has anyone ever had freezing pipes? Did they burst?

Unfortunately we have. Thank goodness it’s been awhile, but my husband has had to fix our nephew’s a few times. Not fun especially in the cold.

I'm sorry that happened to that business. Freezing pipes and frozen well pump- they are one of the reasons why I thought about moving when hubby retired. I loved being out on acreage but sure had some scary winter times. Tons of responsibility to be handled when we were not youngsters anymore.

Yes, in 2014, the pipes in our basement froze. Ruined both furnaces and both hot water heaters. Boy was it cold for quite a while.

Yes, years ago at our last house. You may not remember the huge ice storm that went through back then but the ice storm ripped down power lines all over my city. The whole place was without power for two weeks. When that happened, since there was no heat in the houses, water lines froze and a few busted and had to be repaired as soon as people could get to them.
Our house was the last one in the city to get electricity back because when the ice storm tore down power lines, most places the lines were torn off the power line poles. At our house the ice was heaviest right at the house and ripped the lines off the house itself. Those lines were left for last so they could help the most people as quickly as they could.
Our cold water pipes froze but none of them burst. I kept a trickle of water running in the kitchen sink and in the bathroom sink so they still had an outlet when other pipes froze and burst. Our landlord there was happy because that meant he didn't have to rush to get a plumber to us when they did repair the electric lines and the water came back on.

I haven't had any freezing pipes myself but my son is a plumber and has gotten numerous calls for freezing pipes just the last few days. I know people are happy to see him when they're dealing with such a problem but I worry about him being out in all this freezing cold weather. (he'll always be my baby boy

When I was a kid our water froze up a couple of times but I don't remember any burst pipes. We had to melt snow on our wood burner for water to drink.

No, though I remember once when I was a kid it was so cold that when we turned on the garden hose, hose-shaped ice came out.

Yes, but fortunately they didn't burst. I keep the cupboard doors open now under the kitchen sink so the warm air gets in.

Living in various cold places we learned that you insulate those pipes! I did have one rental one time, and the kitchen sink was on an outside wall. The drain froze, but not the water pipes. I defrosted the drain with my hair dryer, and it was fine. The landlord came later and put new insulation in the wall, so it didn't happen again.
I am hearing about quite a few people with frozen pipes. When they burst, it makes such a mess, and it's an expensive fix.
