I remember my dad saying if I could catch him, he’d give me my birthday present. So I started chasing him, and when we got to the living room, there it was. A beautiful bike, with a white basket, multicolored streamers hanging out of the handlebars…I was so excited! I just loved that thing.

That is such a sweet memory. I’ve always wanted a bike with a basket. My first bike was loud orange and I used to share it with my siblings. Sometimes all 3 of us will ride it at the same time one at the back of the driver and one sitting on the bar after the driver.

My first bike was a hand-me-down, as I recall, but I liked it anyway. It was a shiny blue/green color with a banana seat and the brand name "SPYDER" on the top tube.

I do remember having a bike ( a Schwinn) and I would ride it everywhere. Back in those days us kids would ride our bikes all over. Our parents didn't drive us anywhere except maybe to church on Sundays. There were times when my mom would let us ride our bikes to school and how free it felt not having to ride the bus (public transportation).

Yes, my Dad constructed it from parts which I think he found in the dump! He and one or two of his teacher friends (they were notoriously badly paid at that time) used to go and browse in a dump which was a disused quarry pit, and find all sorts of useful things.
I remember the bike was light blue and it had solid rubber tyres. At first it had no pedals, so I used to glide down the road. Then he added some pedals but I still had no brakes, so I could pedal off down the road (which was a slope) but I had to stop by running onto the grass verge at the entrances to our neighbours' houses further down. Eventually I got some brakes as well!
The solid tyres were a real blessing because all the hedges round our way were hawthorn and when they had been trimmed with those mechanical flails there would be thorns all over the roads and lanes, the tyres were like pincushions. When I graduated to a bigger bike I remember, after one trip in the autumn, my Dad had to repair 12 punctures in one tyre!

No, but I remember leaning my brother's bike up against the house to climb onto it when I was about 11. It was an old bike he found in the grandparents' garage. It must have belonged to one of the uncles.

I had a little bike when I was about 5 or 6. I think it was pink and white, and then when I turned 9 I got a brand new "big bike" for my birthday. I crashed it on the maiden spin. I forgot to turn at the curve in the road, I flew off and hit my butt on some rocks. Needless to say I never made that mistake again.

No, not really. I was barely allowed to ride it because my mom was a worrywart who was sure I’d crash.

Mine was purple-blue, white basket in front, multi-colored steamers, and a white seat.
