Unusual Olympics Headlines

I haven’t been watching the Olympics, but some stories seem to go out past the sports realm, and tend to permeate the world of non sport fans. The one that stands out to me is the Norwegian athlete, who when he won bronze, confessed to the interviewing reporter that he had cheated on the love of his life, and she had found out a week prior (the transgression was apparently 6 months ago). He later apologized for shining the spotlight on his irate ex, and taking away the shine his gold winning Norwegian teammate should have had. Then there is the Ukrainian athlete, who last I checked, had decided to not compete in his sport because the IOC wouldn’t let him wear his helmet with the faces of four soldiers who had been killed by Russian forces. I feel badly for him. Third, was American Breezy Johnson getting proposed to by her now fiancé when at the finish line when she won her gold medal in skiing. He said he did have a backup plan if she lost, but I don’t think he said what it was. Did any of you hear about these? Were there others I missed?

I did read of the Ukrainian athlete and the helmet, and like you, I felt badly for him. I am guilty of not watching hardly any of the Olympics this time. I really should.

@AmbiePam It is often impossible for me to follow up on plans I try to make. Or I will turn on the television to something I wanted to see but then something happens and it's not possible. Life...it has it's ups and downs, for sure.

The guy confessing to cheating was so odd. I can’t imagine someone being swayed by that.

The only thing I heard about was the proposals and those holding the big letter J. because Hmm, I don't remember the back story.

I have not been watching or even paying attention to it, once I heard about some Americans and their political comments, I decided it was not worth watching.

As the Olympics are here in Italy, every morning I read those stories in the newspapers.

I didn’t hear anything about those. I just haven’t had time to watch the Olympics. Only get news updates of who won what medal and for what.

I have heard about the Breezy Johnson and the Norwegian. I personally think the Olympics should be about athletic competition not about using it as a platform for protest or a social media post. But the media today loves a controversy or human-interest story. Actually, I did not mind the proposal, that was harmless. One really good human interest story was the Italian skier who came back from a devastating knee injury at age 35 to win the gold medal. Feel good interest stories are fine. Athletes bashing their country like some U.S. competitors is sad. Another story I found upsetting was a U.S. female snowboarder who renounced her citizenship but trains and lives in America. She competes for Communist China where her mother was born. The Chinese gave her 6.5 million to do so. Way to sell out your country.

I am familiar with her. Funny how she sees the foibles in a free country, but not an oppressive regime that she doesn’t even live in, and would never put up with.
