A new word for you - syzygy

Tonight, there is a total lunar eclipse. This occurs when the Earth comes between the moon and the sun. Because the light from the sun is blocked, tonight’s full moon will be in shadow. This will cause a ‘blood moon’ as the colour of the moon will turn to a deep and coppery red. My source said this will be the last chance to see this phenomenon for nearly three years. We’ll be at the movies but perhaps Vince will be interested enough to forego the film to get a chance to photograph a blood moon. The almost straight-line configuration of the sun, moon, and earth that occurs during a solar or lunar eclipse is called ‘syzygy’. Isn’t that a great word? The photograph which is Vince’s is of a full moon.

It's pretty difficult for an English speaker too! It looks difficult too, doesn't it?

There was too much artificial light so it wasn't very impressive.

That is quite a good resolution picture! Quite an interesting word - "syzygy". I wonder if it is a derived word or having some kind of a Greek or Latin origin?

Wikipedia says it's of Ancient Greek origin. It's a pretty cool word.

I've heard something about that. I'm not sure we'll see much of anything, but it's still cool all the same.

One to remember for Scrabble. There was really too much light around for a really good photo.

It was too cloudy where I am, as per usual, to see the blood moon. I’ve never heard of ‘zyzygy’ before, despite being an ardent follower of Susie Dent. Her of Countdown, and 8 Out of 10 Cats fame. I am trying to think of other words that don’t have vowels in. ‘Rhythm’ and ‘Nymph’ come to mind.

@JudyEv Sorry, I meant to say “8 Out of 10 Cats does Countdown” It’s a combination of the two shows. Not for the prudish!

@Orson_Kart I'm sorry too. I actually know the full title of the show but I've only ever watched it about once or twice.

That is a great word. I was working on an account today and the account holder's address was Donnybrook St, and I immediately thought of you! It was in Canada, although I cannot recall the province.

How 'bout that? There are three Donnybrooks in Australia. One lady rang for tickets to a Music Shack concert but changed her mind when she learnt we were in WA and not just down the road in South Australia.

The photo is beautiful. I've known that word for some time. It's popped up in some of the books I've read. It's not a word I'd use, though. I hope you enjoy the movie.

Thanks for that new addition to my vocabulary. How is it pronounced? Last night, when I went home I saw that the moon was red and I just knew that it was known as blood moon.

I pronounce it siz-i-gy but I don't know if that's right. The blood moon wasn't very red from where we were.
