We had to throw out a lot of food

We had a nasty surprise when we returned home from two nights away with friends. Our fridge has an ice-maker/cold water component and, just before we left, we noticed water coming from the nozzle. We turned off the water to that part of the unit and went on our way. However, when we got home, we were dismayed to find that the fridge itself had failed and everything had thawed. We had to throw out all the food from the freezer section. Luckily, it was garbage collection day and we were able to throw the thawed food straight into the bin. To make it worse, it was a public holiday so little chance of getting anything done till the next day. We cranked up a car fridge that was in the shed and, to cut a long story short, we bought a second-hand fridge as an interim measure until we get the insurance sorted out, etc. Someone is coming tomorrow to assess what is wrong with our own fridge. It’s only our years old but these things come with built-in obsolescence, I’m sure. The photo is Vince’s showing a dessert on offer in Thailand. Edit: Sorry, the photo won't load but it's no big loss.

Oh, wow! I'm sorry that happened. I hope everything gets sorted out soon. We just bought a new deep freeze and added insurance to it. The fridge here isn't ours, it belongs to the landlady.

Oh NO! I am so sorry Judy. I remember when our fridge in Switzerland had the same problem. I noticed water coming from the nozzle, luckily we were at home. I checked the thermometer inside the freezer and noticed it was warming up. We had a second freezer so I could save all the food inside. The photo problem is back. I was trying to attach a photo to a comment and I got the usual error.

That's not good, I freak out when our freezer went out & we went & bought 1 & thank God didn't lose any food but we don't go any where for very long either so that helps.

It is always such a disappointment when we have to throw out food. But in this case, you cannot allow yourself to become ill. I hope that it is fixed now.

that a nightmare to come home to. There’s nothing worse than opening the fridge and realizing everything’s gone. At least the timing with garbage day was one small mercy

I’m sorry you had to go through that. We lost everything in our kitchen refrigerator/freezer, basement refrigerator/freezer, and upright freezer years during a hurricane. Insurance covered just about everything, but it was despairing at the time. Now we have a generator. Too little, too late.

Sorry to hear that . How annoying that you had to throw away food. I hope you can get it sorted soon. Ours broke last year …the repair man it was a manufacturing fault and wrote a report for us to send to the people we had it off. Citizens Advice also drafted us a letter to send to them. We heard nothing ! We were given a fridge from our son as it was a spare when he bought his new business. We are still using that ….its not in the kitchen though which is a pain. We need to get a new one really …..

We had our freezer go out a few years back and it was awful tossing the food out. Sorry that your fridge broke.

Certainly not something you wanted to come home to but at least it was garbage and you could get rid of all that spoiled food. Hope the fridge is an easy fix and you don't have to invest in a new one.
