With the screen grab, I wonder if I even have to give the “Linda? NO!!!!!” warning to anyone who doesn’t like country music.
I’ve already mentioned this guy in an earlier discussion about the “neo-traditional” movement in country music in the mid-80s, and here he is for your dining and dancing pleasure!
Guitars, Cadillacs - Dwight Yoakam
If blue jeans had a religion, Dwight Yoakam would be their god.
(Billboard magazine)
Yep. Lots of women enjoyed watching Dwight Yoakam and those spray-painted-on blue jeans dancing around the stage in the 80s.
Along the way, everyone was being treated to some grade-A Bakersfield Sound revival music.
Although Yoakam is from Pikeville, Kentucky (“they learned readin’, writin’, Route 23” he sang in a song), his heart and soul grew up in Bakersfield with Buck Owens’ music. In fact, one of Yoakam’s biggest hits was a remake of “Streets of Bakersfield” duet with Owens, the man who wrote it and originally had a hit with it. (And I swear that, as Yoakam gets older, he looks more and more like Owens.) He moved to California because he didn’t think much of what Nashville was doing to country music in the 80s. Because of that, we had a brief revival of the 60s, with pop-like country music, traditional country music, and Bakersfield country music all living harmoniously on the charts. (As I said earlier…and then, Garth.
)
Yoakam isn’t yet in the Hall of Fame; and, given their disdain for people who poo-poo Nashville (look how long it took people like Ray Price, Merle Haggard, and Owens to be inducted), he’s probably got a long wait ahead of him. It’s been 40 years now since that debut album came out and reminded us how gloriously wonderful a sad country song could be.

Thank you girl for teaching me:

There’s twang in some CCR, but I understand your disdain.

I’m pretty sure a lot of women were attracted from the waist down.
(I didn’t care for his dancing, which looks awfully “Nathan Johnson white” [see Steve Martin’s The Jerk for the reference], but I see how pubescent girls would like it.)

You think his cowboy hat might give it away?
And yes, I do recognize this song.

We made it through the first round of storms. Nothing like northern Illinois and Indiana, thank God.

Never did take a Cadillac ride with this guy. My favortie cars are the 57 Chevys that friends of my parents would take us for a ride in,

Don’t care for Cadillacs. But guitars and hillbilly music are great!

Thank God, no. Earlier this evening there were tornado watches from the Texas/Mexico border all the way up to the Illinois/Wisconsin border at Lake Michigan! There has been at least one significant tornado, which his Kankakee (south of Chicago, the town mentioned in “City of New Orleans.”)

We are under a watch now. We did have a tornado warning once this evening, but as you know it decided to veer a bit north and hit Kankakee. But there's some more action boiling up right now, our weather people say we could see a tornado around 2-3 AM. Time will tell, I hope it dissipates, but we can never count on that.

I like just about all country music, but there are some songs that I am just not a fan of. Also I am noticing the older I get, the more of the songs I thought I didn't like- I am starting to like. I used to HATE Bob Dylan, and now I can tolerate some music.

I know this song as a co-worker was nuts about Dwight Yokum. I still remembered some of the lyrics. My favorite line in the song, ''If I can find my mind now, I guess I'll just leave,''

I love that line too. Especially since I usually have to find mine.
Thankful the storms have missed you, but I’m so sad for Kankakee.

It was on our news. What a big mess, so much damage. And the size of the hailstones, good grief! If one hit a person in the head, they would not survive it!

He didn’t export well. Most of our “traditional-sounding” country singers don’t.
