Well
The update is this
Yvonne did not get either of her eyes done today.
And there was us up at 8am.and at the hospital for 10am
But hey ho she got assessed!!
Again
And told what to expect , again
And finally
Told that the waiting list is about 2 years
So I guess we are going private
£1000 per eye if we book for both eyes at the same time.

Wow! That’s a crazy long wait! And the cost is expensive, isn’t it?

@lovebuglena
Because 2 years is a long time and her eyesight could get really bad
And we can well afford to pay
I just want what's best for Yvonne, money is not an issue

@Ineeddentures - Should I need cataract surgery, I go to see my doctor in Switzerland. I trust him.

The Doctor said waiting wasn't a real risk of anything like blindness
The private clinic we would go to and pay are all ex NHS surgeons,
Millions of people go private for cataract, hips, knees, etc etc
Our private sector is very good

I hope I don't need it because I would be very scared I would either die or get blinded

Well no
It's either a two year wait for free treatment
Or pay £2k and get it done soon.

@Ineeddentures that's kind of a hard decision. Waiting two years is a long time especially if she needs it sooner but paying for it can really be expensive.

Aye
Yvonne got really wound up about it.
There are huge waiting lists on the NHS for cataract surgery because it's free
So she has a choice
Go private and pay, or.wait

@Ineeddentures I can understand waiting to get it for free...that is a better price. But if the time could make things worse, and you have the money...sounds like doing it now would be better.

@Ineeddentures It sounds like the left eye is what our doctors would tell a patient that it is not ripe yet.
Because of our health care the costs are probably lower, but still they run around $4000-$5000 unless a patient needs a corrective lens and then it goes up. I quietly teased my mother when she had hers done back in 2009, that we should sell her eyes online once she passed. She told me that she thought it was quite steep and she knew that there were many would would never be able to afford such surgery.

It seems to be the standard wait on our NHS for free treatment for cataracts
The doctor today didn't use any terms like rile or mature
He said the left eye is good but still will needs done
The right eye not so good.
You have to trust these doctors
But I think we will just fork out and pay
The private clinic looks ok
And in the greater scheme of things, £2k isn't a lot.

@Juliaacv If there were no waiting lists - and nobody had to go private, our health care is free.
But I think £2k for the whole job on both eyes is reasonable - £1k each eye
£5k Canadian Dollars is about £2.7k
But that would still be ok for both eyes

@Ineeddentures I could not even imagine, And then I looked it up online
On average, cataract surgery costs between $1,808 and $7,000 per eye, depending on the type of surgery and location
.
Without insurance, the typical range is about $3,000 to $6,000 per eye
.
.

Well she can wait
Get it done for free
But she could deteriorate
Or get it fixed quickly
And have no worries
It's not that much money.
Well it is, but it's not when it concerns health
How much would it cost in America

@Ineeddentures when I went for an initial appointment for a vasectomy the surgeon, while examining my dignity, told me there was a two year waiting list or I could pay £1000 for him to do it privately the next week. Mid-examination, with all on display, the surgeon’s secretary popped her head in the door (without first knocking) and told him another surgeon had cancelled all his operations that day and theatre was all his till tea time. So I got snipped on the NHS on the same day as my first foray into world of vasectomies.

@Ineeddentures I asked ChatGPT and roughly $0 with Medicare but you could wait forever; $6,000 to $12,000 with no insurance (both eyes) and $0 to $3,000 with private health cover (both eyes). With private cover, you're also paying premiums all the time.
Vince's heart surgery was $1,000 just for the hospital room. The costs associalted with that were staggering but a lot was covered by our insurance. We are covered for dental work too.

We don't have private health insurance.
Always been NHS patients.
Nobody I know has private health insurance
So how much would cataract surgery cost you over and above the health insurance costs or are things like that all covered and there is no extra cost?

You have to wait for two long years. It's too long a wait.
One of my relatives underwent a cataract operation last year here and it cost him only a little more than 325 pounds. Exactly Rs 325.

I think it is better to undergo it in private hospital than wait for 2years. Thats very long already.
My brother recently done for his cataract surgery but he decided to only his left eye first. If the other eye will heal then he go for another on his right eyes.
