Look what washed up!

Hubs and I were watching yesterday’s deluge when we saw a sailboat adrift. It ended up in our backyard, so so speak, while another boat got separated from its dock and floated by. Imagine our surprise when a man came out of the cabin with his backpack and hurriedly walked away. It’s still here, and many people have stopped by to look at it. I wonder why he was out sailing with such grim weather predictions, and if he’s waiting for tomorrow’s sunny forecast to set sail. I’ve only been on a 50 foot sailboat that our friends owned and will never go again. I feared for my life when he raced another sailboat. He won, by the way, and had also won a big race in Newport, Rhode Island. Not my cup of tea. Have you ever sailed?

Yeah, a couple of times..once was on an inland lake though and it was boring. The other time was on the Potomac, and I didn't understand what the heck was going on. Sailing is a real art. Yeah, you gotta wonder about the guy..Is the boat moored? It looks like it is adrift.

The Potomac sounds pretty rough. My friend has a son who is on it all the time, but he doesn’t race. You’re right. It’s definitely an art and anyone on the water should know the weather forecast. I have no idea about sailing except to watch out for the boom. If I knew what a boom was, I’d watch out for it. No, the boat isn’t moored and keeps drifting in and out with the tides.

@DianneN Now, why would this guy just abandon the boat like that? I think I would call the Coast Guard.

@snowy22315 Who knows? The water is pretty rough today and it’s very windy.

Once a couple from our Church took us and a group of Church members out on their pontoon boat on a local lake. Ir was fun.

That would be fun. When the sailboat tips, it feels like your back is inches from the water and the people sitting on the opposite side are high above you hanging on for dear life. A row boat is my speed

I'z a landlubber, gimme solid ground to stand on ........ or the 4 wheels of my car to roll on. Boats n planes ain't part of my idea of fun. Looks to me like ya'll got a wee bit flooded, I hope you've seen the last of that kind of weather.

lol! Do you happen to know if the owner of this boat is anywhere in El Paso? The waves did come over the sea wall a bit, but the driveway has a special runoff for the water. Not too bad, but the back lawn looks like cr@p as usual.

Nope. The swinging boom with sails attached would scare me. I might not duck at the right time! I have been in speed boats and on a pontoon and enjoyed both experiences both on a local lake and on a local river.

I’m not even sure what a boom is, but always duck when warned. I don’t like sailboats at all, but this one also has a motor. Don't know why he didn’t use it. If he’s not back to claim it by tomorrow, I will ask hubs to start it and motor home as best I could. I’ve never been in a speed boat or pontoon, but they sound like great fun.

@DianneN The boom is the long bar that the sails are attached to that can swing one way or the other to tighten the sail so it catches the wind and moves the boat. They can be a lot of fun. One of my older brothers owned a pontoon boat and would take us out into the lake and moor it. We'd use it to jump in and swim around before climbing back on again.

@DaddyEvil I’m outside looking at the boat right now. There are too many long bars for me to know which is which.. I will have to look online for a diagram that labels everything. Oh, that sounds so ideal and like so much fun! I’ve only been on cruise ships, ferry boats, and fishing boats. The fishing boats were very pretty, but I would never jump into the water, especially with all kinds of fish including barracudas in the water. Hubs still wants a boat, but I still say NO!

I am not a good swimmer and kind of panic if I have to be on the water. What a strange man that was,

@DianneN we had crazy wind and rain for a couple of days and my anxiety was rising and I felt odd but now it all seems to have calmed down,

He climbed out of the boat, slushed through the water, and disappeared to who knows where. I haven’t seen him return to even look to see if the boat was okay. Be happy you weren’t on a boat yesterday. Did you get hit with the storm up your way?

Trust me, you’re not missing a thing. It’s so scary when they tilt the boat into the wind, and of course when that boom can whack you in the head.

I like all boats except sailboats. Sailboats are vile, or maybe it’s the captain. I found it so nerve wracking, except for the cocktails and appetizers of course.

Yes, boats of all sizes are lots of fun. For me, sailboats scare the heck out of me. Too much feeling of going overboard or getting hit by the boom if you’re not quick enough It’s still sitting here and going out and in with the tides. Hope he gets it soon before it gets harmed.

That seems really strange to leave a small boat like that. I've sailed but I wouldn't go again, not on a small boat.

Believe me, count your blessings that you never sailed. The boat is still bobbing to and fro with the tides. I hope he didn’t abandon the boat forever. Very odd.

Sailed?? Aye, but never again In a tiny boat Fishing And every time a wave hit it I thought it would capsize I was huddled into the cockpit where the steering wheel was as it had a roof Wouldn't go on a small boat like that again Would love to have seen your face at having a boat in your yard

No, I have never saiiled, but Bob has, I think. Part of his life, like late High School and off and on as an adult he lived in Middletown R.I. During hurricane Andrew, I think he said, he had a boat of some kind wash into his "yard" in the area. All of this is of course before I met him.

I’ve been in a sailboat, and spent time on one, but got off of it before it set sail. That’s just not my kind of thing.

I do not like at all sailboats, my brother loved, but this is not for me. I only went once with him and his friends and that first time was also my "last time" on a sailboat.
