Going under the knife

There’s nothing like being a bit dramatic and a drama queen but don’t get too concerned. Early tomorrow I’m having an operation called Zenkers peroral endoscopic myotomy, more easily thought of as Zenker’s POEM. Zenker’s diverticulum is a pouch in your throat that forms at the top of your oesophagus. The muscle at the top of your oesophagus doesn’t relax to let food move easily down into your stomach with the result that food gets caught in the pouch. Apologies if that’s too much information. There won’t be a knife involved as the operation will be done through the mouth into the throat. As there will be three tiny staples where the muscle is cut, I’ll be on a liquid diet for a week then a soft diet for another week. I expect that my throat might be quite sore for a while. On a good note, I think liquids would include Bailey’s Irish Cream and soft foods would include jelly, ice-cream and custard so I’m staying positive. I made a big pot of pumpkin soup yesterday and that’s now frozen in serve-size portions. Admission at the hospital is 6.30am so I probably won't be around at all tomorrow but I'll catch up sometime after that. Photo is mine.

@JudyEv It never hurts to pray! Maybe I should pray Vince doesn’t do anything crazy while you’re getting taken care of. Wait, that’s not Vince who does crazy stuff; that’s my dad.

Thanks. It shouldn't be a big deal. Nothing compared to what some people go through.

I hope the "operation" is successful and you don't have a sore throat while you're healing. Still being able to eat ice cream (even if you have to wait for it to melt first) still sounds delicious... I'm not so sure about pumpkin soup, though. That sounds like punishment to me.

Haha. In a way, I'm quite looking forward to my 'diet'. Anything I don't want, I'll just say 'I can't eat that'.

@JudyEv Vince might try to pour it down your throat, though.

Thanks for the good wishes. It's amazing what they can do now without cutting people open.

I am sorry you need to go under the knife. I fear that Bailey’s Irish Cream is not something that the doctor will suggest to have, but ice ream and custards for sure, also milk shakes. Take care Juy.

@JudyEv I hope not too sore, it's so annoying to have a sore throat and not to enjoy eating or drinking.

Oh!!! I hope you get complete healing and quick recovery. Every time I got sick, what I am thankful for is that I lost weight, and then I maintain it, lol! I just want to make you laugh a little. God bless.

Will you be admitted in the hospital for several days or is it an out patient operation? Wishing for your fast recovery after the surgery.

@JudyEv No point having an ailment if it doesn’t have a crazy name. I hope you bounce back quickly.

It apparently affects more men than women. Thanks for the prayers. Always appreciated.

It doesn’t sound as bad the way you describe it. I hope you heal quickly and that it’s not too painful. I will pray for you, and be looking for your update, but just take care and rest.

I won't feel anything while it's happening but my throat might be a bit sore afterwards. It's often a bit sore now but hopefully all that will pass.

I hope you will be back soon with renewed vigor within a couple of days. I have not heard about this surgery but nowadays keyhole surgeries make even the complicated day surgeries.
