Going under the knife

There’s nothing like being a bit dramatic and a drama queen but don’t get too concerned. Early tomorrow I’m having an operation called Zenkers peroral endoscopic myotomy, more easily thought of as Zenker’s POEM. Zenker’s diverticulum is a pouch in your throat that forms at the top of your oesophagus. The muscle at the top of your oesophagus doesn’t relax to let food move easily down into your stomach with the result that food gets caught in the pouch. Apologies if that’s too much information. There won’t be a knife involved as the operation will be done through the mouth into the throat. As there will be three tiny staples where the muscle is cut, I’ll be on a liquid diet for a week then a soft diet for another week. I expect that my throat might be quite sore for a while. On a good note, I think liquids would include Bailey’s Irish Cream and soft foods would include jelly, ice-cream and custard so I’m staying positive. I made a big pot of pumpkin soup yesterday and that’s now frozen in serve-size portions. Admission at the hospital is 6.30am so I probably won't be around at all tomorrow but I'll catch up sometime after that. Photo is mine.

I said a prayer, and I hope this clears up your problem!

Thanks. It shouldn't be a big deal. Nothing compared to what some people go through.

@JudyEv It never hurts to pray! Maybe I should pray Vince doesn’t do anything crazy while you’re getting taken care of. Wait, that’s not Vince who does crazy stuff; that’s my dad.

I hope the "operation" is successful and you don't have a sore throat while you're healing. Still being able to eat ice cream (even if you have to wait for it to melt first) still sounds delicious... I'm not so sure about pumpkin soup, though. That sounds like punishment to me.

Haha. In a way, I'm quite looking forward to my 'diet'. Anything I don't want, I'll just say 'I can't eat that'.

@JudyEv Vince might try to pour it down your throat, though.

Will you be admitted in the hospital for several days or is it an out patient operation? Wishing for your fast recovery after the surgery.

I am sorry you need to go under the knife. I fear that Bailey’s Irish Cream is not something that the doctor will suggest to have, but ice ream and custards for sure, also milk shakes. Take care Juy.

@JudyEv I hope not too sore, it's so annoying to have a sore throat and not to enjoy eating or drinking.

@LadyDuck I'm not sure the paracetamol, etc help with sore throats. I guess I'll soon find out.

It doesn’t sound as bad the way you describe it. I hope you heal quickly and that it’s not too painful. I will pray for you, and be looking for your update, but just take care and rest.

@MarieCoyle I'm looking forward to some extra pampering. I hope you're progressing well too and getting looked after. I'm sure you are. Edit: I know you have your problems too bit I think I meant to write this to Marie who recently had heart surgery. Sorry about that.

@JudyEv Sore throats aren't fun. Hopefully Vince will pamper you and make you some special soft things while you are recovering.

Oh!!! I hope you get complete healing and quick recovery. Every time I got sick, what I am thankful for is that I lost weight, and then I maintain it, lol! I just want to make you laugh a little. God bless.

I am relieved to know that it was a rather simple procedure by today's standards. I have a hiatal hernia which causes me difficulty with swallowing, but I do not want surgery.

There were at least two men in for operations for hiatus hernias. I'm sorry you have this condition. I can understand anyone who doesn't want surgery.

It is amazing what can be done, and what we can learn about our own anatomy. Prayers and good wishes for lots of yummy liquid and soft diet. Pumpkin soup should hit the spot.

Hmmm... I wonder if that's why I have trouble swallowing... Liquid diets definitely include Bailey's (or reasonable facsimiles). I've never had difficulty swallowing that.
