2026 Mulching Complete

Last year we skipped it, although I don't remember why. Maybe the season just started a bit late and we didn't feel like it. But this year, the mulching needed a refresh, and they had it on sale at Menard's after the 11% rebate for $1.98 per 2 cubic yard bag, and we couldn't pass it up. Not enjoying the cooler weather except for the fact that normally when we do this, we're sweating our tails off. But it always looks nice when it's done, and I was happy with the overseeding I did last fall that's come in rather nice. Summer is always busy, but I just love it. Should be in the 80s today, then another slight cool down, and then hopefully we'll be smooth sailing after that. I'm getting tired of this yo-yo temperature thing.

Mulch is basically colored chips of wood you lay in your landscaping beds—it's that red crap in the picture around the shrubs and what not. Perhaps they call it something else there? I am sure you use it.

@Ineeddentures We like a combination of both. Also, the mulch serves as a weed barrier, so what you have in your landscaping is more of what you want and less of what you don't.

@porwest Nah I don't use it or landscaping beds landscaping beds I use grass with shrubs in it And surround garden largely with wild flowers for some colour, you might call it weeds there

We had a too warm month of April and no rain, so I suspect the rain will come now.

April was touch and go for us here. The temps were all over the map. Very irritating. lol

@porwest - We had some cold morning, but the afternoons the temperature was too hot for the season.

This yo-yo weather has been so annoying. Our landscapers did all the mulching here this week

@porwest we're stuck in the 60s here today but overnights this past week have gone down to freezing. I'm really ready for some nice warm weather but NOT hot and humid Good to see you

@Marilynda1225 And we never hit the 80s today. Oh well. lol. I was going to start dropping my marigold seeds this week, but I think now I will wait until next week.

We are the landscapers. lol. But yes. I'm about done with the yo-yo stuff. Supposed to reach high 80s today, but so far we're only about 65, and then it's supposed be back the 60s for most of the week, I think.

@BACONSTRIPSXXX Once you get into it, it's not so bad. It's the getting into it that's the hard part. lol

It's hard on my knees and back, but it always looks nice and feels good when it's done.

It may be 82 tomorrow and then will be lower again. Yay! Don’t want 80s. Not my cup of tea.

@lovebuglena 75 is actually my ideal temperature. But of course, when it's only 75 here, it usually means colder nights and much cooler mornings, which I don't like. I like consistency. That being said, before I even get in the pool the water alone has to be at least 82 degrees for me.

The weather this year has been nutty. I'm ready for some warmer...but not hot...temperatures. Kudos for getting the mulching done. All the best to you and Dawn.

@porwest I prefer the heat to the cold too. Cousin #2 has moved to Homosassa and wants me to move down there. That is probably news to you.

Yeah, the weather's been all over the map. Maddening. But it always looks so nice when we get the yard spruced up, even if it puts me down for a few days after. It's worth it, though. As for the heat, sometimes it's unbearable, but I prefer it all day, twice on Sundays. lol

It's funny, because the same thing happened to me. I somehow skipped mulching last year, and can't remember why. But the yard definitely needed it this year. I took advantage of a Lowe's sale of 5 bags of mulch for $10 to load up and re-do my whole yard. And interestingly enough, I have almost that same eagle banner in my front yard as well! lol

@porwest luckily, I haven’t had any of my yard flags tear yet, but a couple of them are starting to get really faded, and so for that reason I probably should replace them soon. I get most of mine from Lowe’s since I work there and get a discount. I usually wait until they’re on clearance for like $2.

I can't remember where I bought that. Might have been the same store, which might explain it. I might have to replace it this year. It's gotten a small tear toward the bottom.

Our small garden areas are enjoying their topping of sheep manure. I can see the difference in the plants.

@porwest It is indeed. Coming from a farm, I hate having to pay for manure.
