A frog in the lettuce

We used to live in Esperance on Western Australia’s south coast. It’s about eight hours drive from the capital, Perth, and quite isolated really. It’s quite a big town with all the facilities you could ask for, including a Coles supermarket. Coles is one of the big supermarket chains here. Yesterday, a woman bought a sealed bag of lettuce and, when she opened it, found a small green frog in amongst the leaves. He was the same colour as the lettuce so would have been well-camouflaged, I guess. So now there is a big kerfuffle about how the frog came to be in the sealed bag. I wonder if we’ll ever by told. I don’t have a photo of a frog but here is one of one of Esperance’s beautiful beaches.

The frog was in the lettuce before the lettuce was sealed in the box, this happens. I had in our garden those pretty small green frogs, they used to hide inside the lettuce.

I don't know how the lettuce is packaged but it could happen easily enough I would think.

@JudyEv - It happens often that people find small frogs and snails in the packaged lettuce.

It is a lovely picture! I’m sure the frog was pretty miffed. It’s certainly better than finding a mouse, which I’ve seen reported too.

A mouse would freak me out a bit. They released the frog into their garden.

thanks Judy did you eat the lettuce? Here in India if a frog is seen in any food, the food will be thrown off

It didn't happen to us but was in a town where we used to live. I'm not sure if they ate the lettuce or not. I think the store would have replaced the bag with a new bag of lettuce.

I think you win for better post title of the day. Haha! Poor little frog. When I was a child there was a big tree across the street from my Grandparent's house. In the summer it would become covered with little frogs. You could put one in your palm. So cute! Your post made me think of that.

There are air holes in the bag so he would have been okay.

That does look lovely and makes me think a lot of the western isles of Scotland. I wouldn't have thought it would be that difficult for a small green frog to get lost in a lettuce. Just surprised it doesn't happen more often!

Danger if it reaches consumption. That is why vegetables in this case fresh lettuce must be washed first, and sorted sheet by sheet, it could be that in addition to small frogs, there are also small caterpillars there????

Caterpillars are a possibility and also snails.

I have seen cases like this before, but i guess the major question is who should be blamed for this?

The lettuce might be packaged by machine but I don't know that. The store was going to follow up on it.

when i was a child, at one wedding reception, there was a snail on my salad. my mum told the waiter, i think but noone took us seriously and we and other guests started making jokes about it but, it isn't much of a fun when i'm thinking about it now. i could get poisoned, all of us could. and frog is much worse, man...

I think I'd rather a snail than a frog but I'm not keen on either.

@JudyEv exactly. And you would think that after all these viruses in the world, people would take measures more seriously

Pretty found a spider in a bag of prepared lettuce once. Now she shakes the bags several times, watching for anything that moves before she buys the lettuce.
