There’s Something About the Beatles….

Love them, hate them, or be totally indifferent about them, there really is something about the Beatles. And, starting tomorrow, I’ll prove it to celebrate Paul McCartney’s birthday. There will be two countdowns for the month. The one I’m teasing at the moment will NOT be Beatles songs! No, these are songs that mention — mostly by name — the Fab Four. There are a couple of instances where only one of the Beatles is mentioned, and a couple of places where there’s an unnamed reference but you know it’s about the Beatles. And, for you people who thought you were going to get another reprieve from country music, they’ve been mentioned in country songs, too, so they’re on the list. Sorry. I took last month off, but you know the drill: alphabetical for the first part of the month, then my personal top ten. As I said, there’s something about the Beatles…and here’s the Korgis to sing about it!

I'm pretty meh about the Beatles. That being said Paul McCartney's performance on Stephen Colbert's last show was amazing.

I thought his voice sounded great, then I realized Elvis Costello was singing with him to "strengthen" the sound.

I watched the Colbert's last show live, but then I watched it again a few days ago. Oh, how I miss that show!

I definitely LOVE The Beatles, so I’m looking forward to the month of June. However, as much as I do LOVE The Beatles, I don’t remember this song. Is that because I don’t love them as much as I think, or do I have a bad memory? Was it even a hit over here? Anyways…..next!

@FourWalls Yeah, I realised that. I was just saying I’d never heard of the song. I guess I mixed it all up? “Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime” That’s the only song by The Korgis that I can remember.

@Orson_Kart -- at least you've been able to hear them outside of YouTube and online groups saying "Hey you need to hear this band."

These songs are not by the Beatles, they're by other people who either mention the Beatles directly or reference them in passing.

I wasn’t a fan of the Beatles until I saw a lot of their songs performed in Branson. I absolutely loved them! I had just never heard their music as my parents didn’t play a lot of music that wasn’t southern gospel (back then).

@FourWalls My parents just didn’t listen to music period for the most part. They were always so busy. Now days my dad even gets into country.

I can understand that. They weren't very popular among the southern evangelicals.

Elvis was the first one to get me to look and listen to rock and roll and then came the Beatles and so on but in the 1960s being just a kid I educated myself in what I enjoyed about music when I got into my teens in the 1970s. I had the radio going all day when i was home,

I heard some rock from my brother's room, but I didn't really go all-in on rock and roll until I discovered Elton John in 1974.

@FourWalls I had the time of my life being a teenager during the Teen Idol stage, My friend who passed on after I came to Florida to be with her and I were crazy for David Cassidy and as it turned out her father knew his father and they had been friend before the idol period and she got to reunite with him and spend the last 14 years being with him before he passed on and now they are together forever,

I remember The Korgis! I'm going to recommend "The Beatles and The Stones" by The House of Love.

That one didn't make the cut. You'll probably be really angry when you see what I included at the expense of that one. Glad you remember The Korgis!

There were a few hits that mentioned the Beatles, but I agree that most of these won't be known.

I remember when I first heard Jimmy Cross's "I Want My Baby Back", and the song mentions coming back from a Beatles concert, and I was like, wait a minute, this song was from 1964, the year of the big Ed Sullivan debut! I guess it didn't take a year for their name to spread around after all! Jimmy just name-dropped the Beatles that very year!

@mininifty — Ringo still tours. He plays on a couple of the songs on Paul’s album!

I wonder if Lorne Greene’s hit “Ringo” (about a western outlaw) was a hit because of the name “Ringo.” It was amazing…I can’t find any references to Elvis (although “All-American Boy” is regarded as about him) in songs when he became so wildly successful in the 50s, but songs about the Beatles were everywhere when they hit it big.

@FourWalls I briefly thought of that, though it was not a song I've heard a lot. I don't even know what Ringo is doing these days, but that's probably a discussion for another day, another post. But Interviewing the Legends, being a small YouTube channel for fans of session musicians and backup singers, didn't interview Paul or Ringo; when they did a Beatles episode, they went right for the session musician crowd and interviewed ... Pete Best! I don't even know if a Beatles recording of him exists; they were probably just performing at that time, not recording.

Poor Paul has lost his voice. Aging sucks. Looking forward to your countdown.

He sounds good on the new record, but the thing is that we're listening to new music, NOT 60-year-old music coming out of an 84-year-old throat. He sounded good singing "Hello Goodbye" on Colbert's last show, but then Elvis Costello was singing in unison with him to sort of "boost" the sound.
