…That’s Why We’re Celebrating Paul!

On June 18, Sir James Paul McCartney, CH, MBE, will turn 84. That’s not as monumental an accomplishment as another Companion of Honour, Sir David Attenborough, who just turned 100. However, to be fair, I don’t think many of us girls had posters of Attenborough on our walls when we were teenagers, and none of us have any albums by him.
So, in addition to songs that directly mention or reference the Beatles, I’m celebrating Paul’s birthday in style…with 30 great McCartney songs! (Okay, 30 songs that I love, great or not.
)
YES, there will be Beatles songs as well as Wings songs and Paul solo songs. I think the list runs from 1965 to 2026. That’s a long time, but that speaks to the man’s longevity, as well as why we should celebrate him while we have him.
You think this was easy? Here’s “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” as the teaser! For the record, Paul really had an Uncle Albert. As for Admiral William Halsey, who was an American five-star admiral, Paul said that (“hands across the water, heads across the sky”) was in reference to American aid given to the UK during World War II.

I like Paul McCartney for many reasons, but I just read the story about how when John Lennon abandoned his first wife and child, he drove out to see her and Julian, and tried to comfort them and assure them the fault was with John, not her.
His music is just the cherry on top.

He wrote "Hey Jude" to cheer Julian up. I always appreciated the fact that he NEVER strayed from Linda when he married her. He was 100% family man.

By all accounts in many ways Paul took over Father duties for Julian. They are still very close today.

That's one of the great things about music. We had a song by a Japanese singer that hit #1 here in America in the early 1960s. The song was completely in Japanese, no English at all. But that didn't stop people from loving it. Music truly is universal.

@mininifty -- it might have been better if they'd sung in German instead of English, given that "99 Luftballoons" and "Major Tom (Coming Home)" were in German (although, to be fair, they were both bigger hits with their English renditions). Of course, those were back in the 80s....

@FourWalls I'm still upset about Germany's English song trend not making it here in the States! Like in 2003 when Daniel Kúblböck was one of the top finalists on Germany's version of Idol, there was a song, in English, called "You Drive Me Crazy" that really hit the German charts hard! But I haven't seen one American source about the song, even though the song itself is in English! Well, the spoken intro, spoken interlude, and a tiny little sentence at the end were in German, is that why it didn't make it here even though the rest of the song is in English? Or, more likely, German record companies only do German marketing. In 2023 Menderes, kind of the successor to Daniel, did a half-German, half-English album, and all the press releases were in German and all the popularity was in Germany despite all those English songs! So frustrating! Oh, and don't even get me started on English language rap albums by Czech DJs like DJ Wich; I think they even marketed that album in English, but because it was DJ Wich, a name only known in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, nobody cared!

I think the Stones had more "bite." The Beatles got away with a lot of garbage ("I Want You [She's So Heavy]," "Revolution #9") simply because they were the Beatles.

@FourWalls - That has always been my opinion. They immediately became popular in Europe, but not all their songs were good, some real garbage. I was very young when they started and there is one thing that bugs me. I remember that after a few years, looking at Paul I thought "I thought he was prettier, he is getting less cute"... weird!

@LadyDuck -- he was getting older.
I watched an interview with him about his new album and thought, "He was the cute one?????"

Now I have music running in my brain. Thanks. That is better than the training videos I had been watching.

I agree, music is definitely better than training videos. Except for The Man From LOX, we watched that twice in boot camp and I still watch it occasionally! (The ending isn’t for the squeamish, but the rest of it was hilarious.)

He has a nice voice. He's written a lot of songs. Interesting about Uncle Albert. I had often wondered about that line when I listened to the song.

It's like "Let 'Em In," which did NOT make the list. A lot of the people he mentioned in the song are real people: "Brother Michael" is his brother Mike, "Phil and Don" were the Everly Brothers, the "Uncle Ernie" line was a reference to Ringo playing Uncle Ernie in a production of The Who's Tommy, "Sister Suzy" was a reference to Linda, who recorded a song under the pseudonym "Suzy and the Red Stripes."

I always loved this song. Not counting Beatles songs, this was always my second favorite McCartney song, my favorite being "New" (2013), probably because I was in my mid teens when it came out, though during the holidays, "Wonderful Christmas Time" sneaks in there to be my absolute favorite for a little while. But wow, it's hard to believe he's almost 84 now! I feel like his newer music doesn't get discussed nearly enough, but this one is fantastic!

You're right, a lot of his newer music has been overlooked. The new album The Boys of Dungeon Lane will have a song on the list, as will one of my favorites of his, Memory Almost Full from the late 2000s. A lot of his career has had hit or miss periods (spoiler: no duets with Michael Jackson or Stevie Wonder on the list
), but there are people who are 24 who'd like an album half as good as Dungeon Lane is!!
By the way, welcome back!

@mininifty -- I love Kisses on the Bottom. I love those "throwback" albums. I also love Ringo's 1970 Sentimental Journey album for the same reason.

As far as the albums that came out in the 2010s, I can't wait to find out if you like "New" or "Kisses on the Bottom" better, I'm talking about the full albums.

I think it’s cool that Sir David got a letter from King Charles for his 100th birthday as well as quite the birthday party.

I love Sir Paul. And I had read that about the ''hands across the water'' which a lot of people evidently did not know. He is definitely worth celebrating!

I think he's worth celebrating. I know not everyone likes the Beatles, but hey, we only have two left so let's celebrate them while we have them.

Music as we know it changed forever when the Beatles hit the music scene. So, so many groups followed them.
