We have to take care of our wildlife friends in this heat

I just put out some water for the resident squirrels I hope they find it. If I wasn't so lazy I would actually go fill up the bird bath with water back there. However, I did just put out a small trough of water. When it is too hot the squirrels will just kind of spread eagle themselves on the deck. That may not happen today, but I am betting tomorrow when it is supposed to be around 99 they will.

We have the pond and the lake pretty much outside the back patio, not far at all from me. So the animals and birds do have good access to water. Where I lived previously there was a deep creek that fed into a nearby river. But in really dry times it often got way down in levels, then I kept a big water container filled for them. It’s nice that you do that, many people never think of the wildlife needing water.

We aren't far from the lake .but still it would be a trip for the animals. They like to hang around here, their home base.

@JudyEv I didn't actually see any squirrels today. They were laying low in the shade I am sure.

Yes, we wouldn't want to be out there in that..and neither do they. Maybe when it cools off some this evening I will fill up the bird bath. However, it is near where I saw the coyote. Oh well..I am sure it will be fine. I don't think they would see me as food!

@snowy22315 - I think the coyote will not attack you. I hope the guy who bought our house kept the bird bath and fills it regularly.

@LadyDuck I have an item in there that is supposed to squirt water like a fountain..but it is solar operated, and there is generally too much leaf cover back there for it to happen. It is kind of disappointing, but I wasn't thinking about that when I bought it, or just thought it would work or something. I guess it may work in the fall, but I don't keep the bath filled often. I never see any birds in it.

I bought plastic bowls solely for the purpose of putting water out for the birds and squirrels. They take a bath in it on hot days like this.

The birds here rarely venture onto the porch or deck. Squirrels..yeah they think they own them!

@FourWalls During that time when we had snow for weeks wD the first time I saw birds actually eating seed..instead of the squirrels gogging it all.

@snowy22315 — I got tired of replacing bird feeders early on, so I have heavy-duty plastic shelves out back. I load them down with bird seed and let the squirrels and birds duke it out for themselves.
(Truthfully, most of the time the birds and squirrels get along with each other…the squirrels don’t like other squirrels, though.)

I just realized it was too hot for them. It is especially apparent when they spread eagle on the deck. Thanks for you kind comment.

@snowy22315 I will put a bowl of water in my backyard, just in case there are some thirsty animals passing by.

It is funny to see when that happens. Not happening much here. Most of the time I have water someplace in my yard.

At least around here they have plenty of shade. They curtail their outdoor activities considerably when it is too warm.

Aww, I bet the squirrels will appreciate that more than you know ?? When it gets that hot, even a small trough of water can make a big difference for wildlife.

We do put water out in the garden for all comers.
Mind you, there is enough rain water to meet the needs of the garden visitors
It absolutely poured down yesterday
We only get birds
Oh and cats which belong to other people
No wildlife as such
