The Staples Hurt...

@DaddyEvil - My husband could remove the staples after 8 days. I hope it works also for you.

I'm really hoping that's what happens when we see our regular doctor in a few days. (Tuesday morning.)

@celticeagle No problem. I was in the hospital for the last week while the neurologist did an experiment on me. She slowly drained some of the spinal fluid that was building up in my skull and compressing my brain. I've been having trouble walking correctly, thinking right and responding to verbal conversations as quickly/well as I normally do. After the experiment was over, the doctor stapled the hole in my spine closed so it could heal. She'll be looking at the results of the tests as well as what has happened here at home since they stopped draining spinal fluid from me and decide if I need a drain installed in my skull with a hose going to my abdomen to relieve pressure and send the fluid into my abdomen so my body can reabsorb the fluid. I'm really hoping that's what she decides is best for me. I felt better during that week than I have for months.

@DaddyEvil — the stitches themselves were the dissolving kind, but they had to be held in place for a week.

@FourWalls Sometimes I think doctors just "make-do" putting human bodies back together.

The staples are holding the hole closed so it can heal where the doctor put in the drain so they could remove spinal fluid while I was in the hospital. IF they put the real drain in, it will be located behind my left ear in that soft spot. That leads directly into a person's skull and they can leave that in for the rest of my life.

@lovebuglena I don't know. The neurologist will discuss that with us when we see her this next Thursday.

@DaddyEvil Oh wow! Is that area going to get stitched up? Are they gonna put the real drain in?

@DaddyEvil I can imagine! Once you know something is coming out, waiting for it can feel twice as long. Hopefully next week comes quickly and you can finally get some relief.

Okay, okay... You've got me beat! At least Pretty wasn't very big when she was born. That never stopped her mom from complaining, though.

That's what I thought at the time. I've had my hands stitched up, too. Those were definitely annoying at the time. I had carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand and put my right hand through our garage window. Both were fun times.

@DaddyEvil Oh, ugh. My mom and sister had carpal tunnel surgery. It was a necessary evil, but such an annoyance.

@AmbiePam Oh, I definitely agee. I couldn't take pain meds after I had the carpal tunnel surgery, though. The meds the doctor gave me made me throw up. When I complained, he told me he couldn't give me anything else.

Hey! It's been a while since I've seen you! I hope you and your son are doing well. I'm just having a little trouble with hydrocephalus (water on the brain, older adult version). I'm having trouble with my balance, walking oddly and losing memories. My neurologist had me check into a hospital last week so they could run tests on me to see if I'm a good candidate for a drain and tube running from my head into my abdomen to drain off spinal fluid to relieve pressure on my brain. The test seemed to work but we go back this coming week to see what the neurologist says. The staples were put in after the hose was removed from my spine. The neurologist will remove the staples when she sees me next week. I just have to put up with them a little while longer.

@DaddyEvil I am always quick to get out of a hospital once the discharge papers are signed by the doctor.

Wow! You weere really anxious to get out of there, weren't you? I'm glad things turned out well for you!

But you had fun playing with your baby so probably didn't notice the staples most of the time. I don't have a baby to play with me.

I figured out today that if I stay on my stomach or sides, the staples don't catch on anything. That's a much nicer experience that when I'm lying on my back.

@kareng I don't normally sleep on my stomach.

@DaddyEvil Good luck with that. You’ll probably need another week to deal with the discomfort. I’m assuming you’re taking some medication to help manage the pain.

I did. The doctor told me it will only be another week before they can be taken out so I should be able to put up with it.

@DaddyEvil I bet you’re right as stitches are less rigid than staples too. Also less likely to fall prematurely.

I had stitches when I had carpal tunnel surgery. They were a lot easier to put up with than the staples are. The stitches never caught on anything and pulled like the staples do.

Yes, to hold the wound closed until it heals.

@DaddyEvil how long is your wound? Isn't it just a needle insertion?

@rakski It was a big needle but it's only about a quarter inch/6.35 mm.
