A few years ago one of my sisters had a sudden hospital visit. She got a super nasty headache. She ended up having surgery to remove a benign tumor. Of course thank God it was benign. I thought she was acting pretty normal afterwards though her daughter said she was more forgetful.
Yesterday I had a phone chat with sister. Usual person that I grew up with. Then I mentioned that I had just adopted a Siamese kitten. Her answer? "You have a cat. You've never had cats." That was so shocking that without thinking, I laughed and said, "You're joking, aren't you?" She earnestly said she wasn't joking. That put the brakes on for me. Whoa. Sister is having an issue. I'm left thinking about it and feeling sad. Sister has never, except for University dorm days, been in my house without seeing a cat. Ever. Just whoa.

I feel the same way. Sometimes there really is nothing you can say that will make a situation like this easier, but a little kindness still means a lot.

Yes, that was my first thought too. It sounds like such a small thing, but knowing her history makes it quite worrying.

That is so true. Sometimes someone can forget the most unexpected things, and when you know them well, it can really catch you off guard.

Yes, I agree, she's having either a senior moment or something else is wrong. It's also possible that some minor memories were removed when the tumor was taken out.
One of my brothers lost some memories of his childhood when he had a tumor removed. We didn't realize that was possible until we were all sitting around talking about our childhood memories when he said he didn't remember any of the things we had been talking about. He was the main instigator of the incidents we had been discussing.
