Theme From New York, New York - Frank Sinatra Here’s a funny story: Frank Sinatra did a song called “New York, New York” twice in his career. The first time was in the 1949 movie On the Town, which he did with Gene Kelly and Jules Munshin. That came from a Broadway play. That’s the one that goes, “New York, New York, it’s a wonderful town.” Oh, a quick note: the Broadway song says, “New York, New York, it’s a helluva town.” They changed it to wonderful for the film because of the Hays Code prohibiting foul profanity. This is the one from the movie New York, New York, a 1977 film that starred Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli. This is the “start spreadin’ the news” one. Minnelli sang it in the film, but let’s face it: this is Ol’ Blue Eyes’ song. No, he didn’t do the original, but which version do they play at Yankees games?
