Do most people know these two songs?

During the World Cup, and then in Europe (Germany) during an (American) football game, the crowd started singing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver. The crowd was not even close to all Americans. Similarly, during baseball games, and even at a recent football game overseas the tradition is “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond. And they were so loud you could tell people knew all the words. Both of these songs are before my time, and I can only sing a few lines of each. Do you guys know these two songs well? I assume Americans of a certain age would. I kind of doubt those songs charted in Asia though. What about you?

I hope everyone knows them. They’ve been played enough.

@AmbiePam — I think West Virginia has some kind of computer program that takes over your car radio and starts playing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” when you hit the border.

Yeah I know both of them, Sweet Caroline gets sung at pretty much every game and Country Roads at every wedding it feels like. Funny how some songs just travel everywhere, even to places they never charted. I think people just love having something easy to sing together in a crowd.

Yes, that’s a good point. Sometimes it doesn’t matter if they charted in that particular country.

Yes, I know those two songs, but I have been in the United States so many times and we listened to American songs.

It’s just that not many people here, if English is their first language, do they listen to the music of other languages with maybe the exception of songs in Spanish.

@AmbiePam Europeans listen to songs in English from the times of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. No one (except Germans) would listen songs in German, the same is for Italian and French.

'Sweet Caroline' seems to have become some sort of football anthem recently, I have no idea why as it isn't related in any way. And I don't know that most people know more than 'Sweet Caroline, doo doo doo' but they all do it anyway! Same for 'Take me Home' I expect!

I had heard “Take Me Home, Country Roads” really was popular in Germany years ago, but then David Hasselhoff’s music was also popular in Germany. So some things just don’t make sense.

@JohnRoberts “Sweet Caroline” doesn’t surprise me, but I didn’t realize John Denver was big in Europe.

Just now
I know both of these songs well. John Denver is best known over here for “Annie’s Song’. Olivia Neutron Bomb had a minor hit with “Country Roads”. Sweet Caroline is sung at many sporting occasions here. I’ve no idea why, but it’s only started fairly recently.

I thought more people would know the words of Sweet Caroline rather than the other, but it appears to be the opposite.

Two among my all time favorites, I always got to my Internet source and this iw what it says. Both "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Sweet Caroline" have charted in Asia, gaining significant popularity in various countries. Now no more excuses get on YouTube and start getting your musical education,
