Can you think of any healthy waffle toppings, for someone who doesn't use syrup?

What do you put on your waffles when you want to eat healthy and not use syrup? Last night I was reading the syrup label and saw that it's mostly high fructose corn syrup. I've read that can cause big weight gain in children, so I'm throwing out the syrup. I'm looking for healthy waffle toppings that don't involve syrup. Some days, I like honey on my waffles and some fruit pieces like canned pineapples. It's really tasty. And way healthier than syrup. I've thought about low fat cream cheese and strawberries. What do you think? What type of healthy toppings would you use on your waffle?

There are really a lot of options. We eat ours with peanut butter on them. While it has a high fat content, it also has so many good things in it. You can also buy lower fat options. Of course, my son is under weight so encouraged to eat foods with lots of high fats that are still good for him (peanut butter, cheese, milk, yogurt). While powdered sugar isn't healthy you can dust them for just a bit of added sweetness and then top them with fruit (all sorts works, apples warmed with a dash of cinnamon, berries, cherries). You can also top it with a bit of yogurt for a tasty treat that is very healthy.

The fat content in peanut butter is the good kind of fat. So you don't have to be as careful about it.

strawberries are great, you can also go for peaches, raspberries, blueberries, powdered sugar (while still sugar its still less than syrup!) you could also do whipped cream (get the lite kind!) or bananas or peanut butter or even a little hot chocolate powder... You could also try sliced almonds or ice cream. What about orange juice? I never tried that but it could be good!

I suggest you make sure it's real whipped cream. Or better yet, make your own. It only tkaes about ten minutes and you can control the amount of sweetener. The 'lite whipped topping' products may be better for caloric intake, but dietary health is so much more than calories. I couldn't recommend whipped toppings as a 'healthy' alternative for the amount of additives, preservatives, etc. ~Sara

Butter and syrup are the yummiest toppings for waffles. But if you're looking for a healthier alternative, then you should try peanut butter and bananas. Both taste great together. There are reduced fat and light versions of peanut butter available in the market so that should make it healthier than syrups. :)

I put jams and preserves on my waffles. Sometimes, I use a bit of powdered sugar and cinnamon and that's it. Pure maple syrup doesn't have high fructose corn syrup in it, but it's a bit pricier than the stuff that comes in the plastic bottles.

I was doing Weight Watchers for a while before a wedding I was in and I was craving waffles, but syrup was so hign in points that it just wasn't worth it to me. And it was funny because waffles which you would think were bad, are not as bad as i thought, so someone at Weight Watches suggested using sugar free jelly or jam as a light spread on the waffles, and now, several years later, sugar free strawberry preseve has become my new waffle topping.

My family likes to put peanut butter on both waffles and pancakes then just enough syrup to keep them moist. We also use fruit spreads that don't have a lot of sugar in them. They are sweetened with the juice of the fruit. There are some that are 100% fruit and those are the ones I buy. You have to look at the ingredients to see if sugar or corn syrup is added.

I love cream cheese and fresh fruit on my waffle. I like fresh peaches the best of all. I do put a reduced fat peanut butter on my waffle, also. It makes it all melty and good. I think that is my favorite way to eat a waffle.

I think that if you stick to mostly fruit toppings you would be pretty safe about calories. If you put a little bit of sugar sweetner on it you will also be saving on calories, instead of using sugar. What I like to use is frozen fruits that I microwave first with a little bit of sweetner sprinkled on it. The reason I prefer frozen fruit is because when micorwaved it gets the fruits juicier and then it tastes better on my waffles and pancakes. It is also healthier that way and cheaper too than fresh fruit.

If I was to forego the syrup I'd use fruit toppings like bananas or strawberries. Quite frankly I think some parents get way too overboard when it comes to sugar intake. Yes there are quite a few things that have it, but I'm not going to get rid of our syrup because it has it. You just have to watch the extra intake - like candy, desserts, and snacks. Even canned fruit. I will get canned fruit in light syrup or water rather than heavy syrup.

I like cream cheese as they come in all sorts of different flavours. I like to add alot of fruit as well. Another one that I like is fruit with whipping cream. I like using just plan odd whipping cream, whipping it up and adding a little bit of icing sugar. MMMMM now I want waffles.

I like that sugar icing idea! Of course that would be a dessert but I am sure it would taste very nice, like a cinnamon bun. I had one of those the other day, so yummy! Thanks for all your ideas.

You honestly don't need alot of icing sugar as well. It does a fine job of sweetening it. I also put a little bit of vanilla extract in it as well.

We like to serve fruit on waffles. Any type of fruit. Usually it is strawberries but The other day we had raspberries and they were so good. I have made them and topped them with bananas that are sprinkled with Cinnamon, Sauted pears with cinnamon and put them on the waffles is also really good.

Actually, if we do use syrup, I usually take out half of the bottle of syrup and put it in another container, and then water down both halves with warm water before using it. But if you are to for go syrup altogether a yummy topping is something as simple as either buying natural "fruit spread" or buying fresh fruit yourself and blending it with a wee bith of water, so it is a runny like syrup consistancy then pouring it over the waffles, YUM ;)

My son normally does not eat syrup. He does not like it. he will mostly just have butter on his. My sister in law likes to put cream cheese on hers with some strawberry jam. I normally eat mine plain or with some peanut butter on them.

Fresh fruit is great, such as pureed strawberries or even putting sliced strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or peaches on top. I've also been known to use some butter and a small amount of powdered sugar. I'm diabetic, so can't tolerate syrup.
