Almost 6 months... and STILL a 67?

I don't know what to make of it or what any of you make of it. If anything, this should elicit a "huh?" about the rating system. Granted my activity declined in the last month, but those other 5 months were pretty much the same as the day I started. About 6 months ago I finally got past the magic 65.5 and received my silver star (for the fourth time). Since then I've climbed an almighty 2 points in 4 months time. Yup... 2. I'll take a moment for everyone's collective awe. ;p And to make this a discussion, what are your thoughts on this or your own rating. I've also noticed people on certain "star" quests. You can share that if you like too. Recently I've seen at least one member improve star rating after several months as the same low rating. Any other thoughts on this, feel free. I know my rating is due to my opinions, and in some cases my having the audacity to question others or comment on other responses. "How dare I!", I guess.

I'm not that concerned with my rating, although I realize that most people are. I was just thrilled to make it to 100 posts so that I could have a star.To be perfectly honest, I don't even know how I got the rating I have. Guess I haven't upset that many people with my postings or replies. If this isn't the site for opinions, I'd surely like to know which site is LOL And, I give this post a plus rating :)

It actually wasn't a rant, just an interesting observation I thought would make for a decent discussion (its either this or something long, or something esoteric!). That rating could say negative 12 for all I care. I'll still take time pointing out the flaws in the "fair" star system.../sarcasm

It's not exactly fair because it is subjective, one person might hate your post while another person might love it. It doesn't change your post content any and it certainly does not mean that it's either a good topic or a bad topic, it's all in how the other person sees it. Perception is everything =) It would be helpful to have a real reason someone gave a negative rating, such as people should have to respond to a discussion in order to have the opportunity to rate the discussion or any posted content within it. It would also be nice for the person to have to submit a reason for a negative rating and if it was deemed to not be an applicable reason, they'd be warned against rating users, and if they continued to do it, then maybe take away their ability to rate at all. Abuse should not be tolerated at a site such as this.

I have finally got back to an 8 after having been pushedover 'night from a ten to a six, I did protest to mylot and they did do something about the overuse of minus signs.I had been ten and a day later was down to a six I am now up to an eight so hopefully maybe eventually I could reach a nine. maybe perhaps. I was minused for not agreeing that smoking is not harmful. okay but the name calling was against the rules and people know better than to do that.also I was minused on my own views of religon which is really a no no.we arenot supposed to minus' people just because we do not agree with them. but I was minused for that too.

Well, pro, maybe they are just ignoring you, not giving you any rating at all, cause they do not know what to think about you. I will say that you have earned a few extra pluses tonight, as well as some interest.

Last I checked you had a 6 Hatley. See your star is showing significant change since its now at an 8. Its just a bit funny that my star really doesn't move at all. The other things you say about rating, yes they still happen. Sad but true, and unfortunately it wont change. Its nothing worth quitting over, but from time to time I want to look at the whole situation.

Don't let the star rating get you down. The star rating doesn't matter to me when I choose my friends. I hope that you don't up and leave like some past members have done. There are members that go around and give low ratings for reasons that are unknown. Perhaps it is insecurity and the knowledge that they aren't as well liked as others. Who really knows. My take on the star rating is that it needs to be discontinued.

I am glad that you are not leaving. So many people in the past left when they implemented the system due to their low rating.

Woah woah, not leaving or anything! Just an interesting situation I wanted to bring forward. From my perspective, there was a different whole number star rating at least half the time I logged on. In recent months its just been one (very) slow climb. Now Elusive, if you'll excuse me, I must compare the growth rate of my star rating, to the growth rating of grass. ;p

And you have stated this before WhiteHeather. I've noted it. I just thought the current situation was worth a discussion. Its more curiosity on my part, especially since I've seen so many changes on with other members and their ratings (plus the obvious "please neg me" movement). Either way, good call on your part.

Yeah, Pro, you really should refrain from giving your opinion. That's not what this site is all about. It's not about having any real, meaningful discussions that give people the opportunity to think or to consider a different point of view. It's about pleasing all people at all times, never going against the grain, and most of all, never disagreeing with anyone, Ever! Seriously, I don't even notice star ratings. I hardly notice that they are there anymore. I noticed a couple of times that I took a little dip after posting a couple of comments that may not have pleased someone, but I really don't care. I read a lot of your discussions and your responses to my discussions. They are quality and well thought out, even if I don't necessarily agree. What a boring world this would be if no one ever had a different opinion. Share your opinions proudly, and know that you worked hard to earn that 67-- you deserve it. In many ways, a lower number is a sign of quality, because people rate negative when you have the audacity to speak your mind. Don't let that stop you. I'll give you a big + every chance I get!!

Silly, that response needs more bold, and bright gold letters And a nice giant "READ ME" sign. Still funny that the rating doesn't move. I think its going through rigor. Or maybe I've been rated so much that it doesn't show up on my rating anymore.

Hey there, I just ignore the star thingy and just focus on trying to provide the best answer for every question and make sure I do not defend any races or groups. I do not think that any user with a good rationale will give you a minus rating for a disagreeing comment unless they are people who can't accept opinions that is opposite to what they believe.

But remember Red, I've seen you at 1 ever since I started. Then I saw you hit zero. Then you got 1 back albeit with a single digit rating (like 8/100). Now due to my resolves it seems, you now have a 2 star and a 19/100. It was curious... not just that but I too keep receiving BRs but no change in rating really.

It has taken me over a year to climb two points. I do not worry about it. I did at first. I do find that the higher your number, the longer it takes to move up and down, because the higher the number, the higher the pluses and minuses needed to be a percentage point. For instance, if you only have one hundred posts, one minus can bring you down to 99%, but if you have one thousand posts, ten minuses would be required to do the same thing. You need to receive about seventy two plusses right now to move up to 68, if no one minuses you at that same time. I do not get around to all of my friends like I should, but I need to come give you some serious pluses.

A year!? Gah!! Okay okay, uh, this does convince me a bit more that perhaps the amount of responses one has does influence the rating system. Don't feel rushed to plus, I just had this discussion more out of curiosity. Plus I just had to be naughty and start another discussion for my own custom made interest group here!

No one has any idea how the star rating works! I thought for a while a low star rating was a 'badge of honor' because I always say what I think, and not what I imagine will improve my low star rating. But now I've had second thoughts. Its best to never think about the star at all. Its just a crock of myLot $hit!

I really wish people would just plus everyone unless they are verbally abusive then report them. Because we all have a right to our thought and opinion and yes even questions. I have a nine currently and I'm happy with it but at one time my star was lower and I was new and to me my star was everything so I worked and worked to get my star up. I have maintained with a few up and downs but the point I'm trying to make to everyone is not everything in life that we hear are we going to be happy with the pluses and minuses are there not to denote wether or not we are pleased and happy with the answer we get in our responses but wether or not that they discussed the material at hand and the discussion at hand some discussion you have to ask more questions to be able to answer a person properly but as long as everything is discussion related and the person is not putting you down or degrading you or verbally accosting you with naughty words then that - button should never come into play. I no matter what the response unless I have been ask to give a negative rating by the poster give everyone a plus even if I disagree with them becuase that is there point of view and that is what I asked for. We are not carbon copies of each other and therefore we will not always get like minded individuals that answer our discussions so we have to be prepared for a keyboard spanking. Whether it be by our own Cyn who is always more than at the ready to give these.. LOL!! Or someone else who feels strongly in their opinion. This is I repeat a public forum that screams opinions welcome. So no one should be penialized for their said opinion. Sorry about the rant but I feel very strongly about this. LOL!! Can you tell? have a nice one hun.

I see you point it would almost turn into a popularity contest and that would really suck .. But you're right it is interesting to see who resorts to their minus button and who can actually go full out with a good debate. As always hun it's been a pleasure and I look forward to seeing you in my anime quotes.

Everyone can have their opinions on this, and rants are just fine Bella. I have to admit, I've imagined the possibility of a + only mylot, but then the disparity would be who has the most active and rating friends, or who still has the most rateable discussions. Instead of the current situation, we'd see some "quality" responding members with say 157+, while someone with the simple discussions and popularity would have 3309+. About discussions, yes they can get heated and some people can take it the wrong way, but I find it interesting how some members react to the situation, either by hitting the - button or resorting to name calling. I think the best is when a person cant even argue and simply resorts to using the - button. Well I must leave for now, might stop by your anime quote section for fun, or at the very least start up the free-for-all. Until next time Bella!

I generally rate each discussion I respond to with a + and this has worked wonders with my star. Lately, I have been posting divergent opinions and have gotten retorts although there have been words of encouragement too. I get the feeling that people give you a + if you agree with them and a - if you present a different view. People are strange. But people are people and they will always do what they usually do. I think you are getting some -'s.

@mommyboo, thanks for your attitude. I think that helps us all around. I sometimes get irritated by people who have a view to push and the can get aggressive about that. Still, free will is the order of the day and I cannot fault them for their views. I have seen that views change and a healthy exchange of views make for a better understanding of things. @theprogrammer, it's good to know that you now have a 68 which is a definite improvement. I would be interested to know how this develops. @dianel, I would not know what is happening, whether my 10 star is directly related to positive ratings that I have been giving. I would like to think that there is a greater power at work here; maybe the positive feeling I get from the discussions and the positive ratings that I give as a result has also resulted in positive vibrations being generated elsewhere causing positive ratings to come my way. Who knows?

@ Underdog I use to do that too, but got the opposite reaction to my star. I also helped out many people on here and have plenty of quality items to my credit (a quick stroll to my BR area points this out) @ Dianel That can't be correct, as I spent time two weeks ago resolving several discussions and I even had a discussion on this. The rating still didn't change.

There are many discussions or responses that are totally 180 from what I believe and that doesn't mean I would rate them negatively. As long as a discussion or comment adds something good, it matters not if everybody agrees. That isn't the point of a site like this. The point is to share information and views.

Hi, I don't know how the star rating thing works, but from reading these posts, I am gathering that the + and - signs have something to do with it. Well, I rate just about everything I read and have only given one minus. The reason that person received a minus was because he/she started the discussion and seemed rude right out of the starting gate. I ignored that because I felt he/she was stating an opinion and was just coming across as angry or rude. I read the many responses and they all gave their opinions and he/she responded to them . . . repeating his/her points over and over . . . and in the last one I read, he/she was still coming across as rude and did not make any new points to support his/her argument. I did not give a minus because I disagreed with the person's opinion . . . it was because of the rudeness and not adding anything new to support his/her argument. If the rudeness hadn't been there, I would have been less likely to rate with a minus. My question is, when you (or your responders) say you know why you or someone received a minus, how do you know the reason? When I gave that first minus, I did not see anything available to give reasons why I gave the minus. Is there such a thing?

Thank you for the helpful information. And yes, I've noticed most people are very good. That's why I've only given one minus! :-) And, I'm sure that person is also very good, but unfortunately, he/she did not come across that way in his/her writing. If there are people who abuse the rating system, then that makes me think the system should be abandoned or in the least, changed or improved. However, it must be only a few who abuse it, so we have to take the lumps along with the smooth road, I guess. It seems there are people who want to spoil the fun no matter what we do in life!

Hello dear friend, the programer. I also remember it took quite a few months before my star increased to blue until to ninety-nine, but I have no idea for what reason, it later dropped to ninety-eight, then ninety-seven and ninety-six, the one that I have now. It seemed that it dropped on some certain days months back. Ever since, it has been like this. I am expecting to have my ninety-nine to come back to me. I wish you good luck, dear friend.

I'm not too concerned with my rating. Of course, I prefer to have a higher rating. Mine was a 9 for a really long time and I noticed it just climbed up to a 10. That made me a bit happy, but I always try to post relevant and thoughtful responses, so if people downrate me for some reason, I will just accept that. There isn't too much I can do about it anyway, is there?

Well I just reached 100 posts and got my star. I am not sure that I will even pay that much attention to it. Why do they have a rating system anyways? I see that it is really easy to lose your higher ranked star but not so easy to get it back. Oh well am I going to go down a point now that I have said that the ranking system is pointless?? How do the points work anyways? Can someone fill me in?

The star system was meant to depict what mylot members thought of the quality of your responses and discussions. Unfortunately its open to abuse and really doesn't reflect quality or anything of the sort. Other than that the star is just a graphic attached to the username in every post after the 100th one.
