Green Tomatoes - A lot left over to ripen yet this fall.

With the low temps we have had here in Minnesota the past few days the frost won't be far behind. This is a shot of 2 of my tomato plants I have. I have 8 I think total. Now I wanted to share a secret on how to eat red ripe homegrown tomatoes through the winter months as well. I learned this online from a garden forum I belong to. Take the green tomatoes. Wrap each one in newspaper. Set them all in a box in a cool dark area like basement etc. As you want fresh red tomatoes take a few out, unwrap them set them in the sunshine but not on the window sill itself. In a few days they will ripen to a huicy red tomato. I do this every year and it is great. So in a wek or so I'll be picking lots of green tomatoes. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Oh wow I've never heard of this before but what a great idea. I was trying to figure out what to do with my green tomatoes when the time comes. I had seen a recipe for green tomato salsa and thought of trying that but I love the idea of saving them for fresh 'winter' tomatoes more. thanks tons for this tip.

Oh I'm sure there are other things about gardening you know that I don't - hey such as pickles and cucumbers, I always thought they were the same, you taught me the difference on that :)

Hey! That's great to know! Thanks. I've considered whether or not we can grow veggies indoors in the winter.. Maybe I just need to brush up on preserving..

We had a tomato plant started last winter indoors. It grew well byt produced no tomatoes. We planted it outdoors this spring and it did very well. So It seems tomatoes won't grow well indoors. Not here in Minnesota anyhow. hahahaha! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Guess I will join you on that. I wish my peppers had produced a lot as well, but they did not. I got a recipe for a red spicy pepper jelly today. May surprise hubby with some tomorrow after work. It is great to have summer on hand in the form of left over harvest.

It seems that most peoples bell peppers were really stunted this season. I know mine had a very late blooming for some reason. Then most were a lot smaller than they should have been. But I did get a few decent ones at least. Pepper jelly? Odd! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

hiGrandpa Bob Ihad forgotten about ripening greentomatoes,'yeah we used to do that too. And of course my mom always made a lot of what she called piccalli with greentomatoes too. all I knew was it tasted so good with meat of all kinds. You know here in sunny ca we are paying a premium for tomatoes, its sucha shame. we should have planted some in our patio now looks like we are going to have to move as soon as myson gets a job. rents going up one hundred dollars come Oct. we are behind on our rent so dont know whats going to happen, pray for us if you get a chance.

This works very well for me. I set them in a box then place it on the old washing machine. The price here is insane as well. That's why I do so much gardening myself. I hate paying the stores prices for their veggies. Give me homegrown any and all days when possible. Prayers going your way as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Yep we do that here to but not with tomatoes but with fruits that aren't ripe yet or ready to eat. Then we put it on top of the rice grains because it's warm sometimes we bury it inside then in a few days it will be all good and ready to eat.

Ha! I just put that in my answer to another of your discussions, but I didn't know that much! I will definitely do that because I think most of my tomatoes will be green when the frosts come. Thanks for filling in the info!

That's what my parents do. It's nice to eat your homegrown tomatoes year round. You clearly had a great harvest this year. Nice!

This won't work for me, Grandpa Bob, being the only cool dark place also happens to be very damp despite the fan going 24hrs. a day...my crawlspace, which my sump pump has been working hard at trying to keep the water out of with all the rain we got last week. Once it dries up some, we are going to have to go down there and remove all the wet cardboard that the builders put down when they were connecting everything after the house was set on the foundation. It's been pretty decent down there till this last rainfall of over 10 inches in 3 days. I've been washing and putting the ripe tomatoes in quart freezer bags to freeze instead. I just take one out whenever I want a tomato in a recipe and dice it when it's half-thawed.

Your tomato vines are beautiful! Ours are about gone, but probably from lack of rain here. And, not to say that our grandson was mowing down in the pasture where my husband has a few plants and he went around them, mowing most of them down! We thought he knew they were there. Lots of pretty green tomatoes gone! Glad you are going to have lots to store for the winter.
