How do you cure hiccups?

I had a student today who hiccuped continously. I am sure it was done on purpose to disrupt the lesson. However I gave him the benefit of the doubt and I sent him outside to drink a glass of water. Do you have any idea how do you cure hiccups?

There are many suggested ways to cure hiccups, as to whether they work is a different story, some say a glass of water, some say holding your breath, another way is to give someone a fright, which I think would probably do more harm than good! Fortunately it's very rare that I get hiccups except when I drink fizzy drinks like Pepsi but I blame that on the carbon dioxide. I think you did the best thing, at least if you sent him outside it doesn't disrupt the class any more.

What you said is correct. If his purpose was to distract and to disrupt, then sending him out deprives him of an audience. And if he genuinely wants to stop, it lets him not be embarrassed by the continuing hiccups.

Well, sometimes water works, but other times it doesn't. I have heard and tried a teaspoon full of sugar will and did cure my hiccups. I have tried the breathing in a brown bag but it didn't help much. I don't know why the sugar helps it just does. Well for me it did.

I have tried all the "so-called" cures and nothing worked other than time. Do no assume he was kidding. I recall having hiccups for hours on end on some days and boy was it annoying.

Hi ronaldinu, I don't think there is any other way to cure a hiccups but maybe to eat a plan bread, that might help but some people say to put something cold down the back or fright might stop it or just drinking water from the other sid of the cup, the are so many ways but some of the are old wives tales bit no harm in trying it and yes this student maybe having you on. I usually drink a glass of water when I get hiccups. Also I was told by a friend that if we look straight up for 2 or 3 minutes the hiccups will stop, but I have never tried it till now.

The cure that has always worked for my grandkids was a glass of water with a teaspoons of sugar in it. i have heard of a lot of different cures that have already been mentioned, but like I said this is the one that has always worked for us.

Hiccups is your bodies way of getting oxygen into the brain when it is needed. Every time I get them, I take a big breath and hold it for a slow count of 10...if a hiccup comes before I'm done then I start over. It always works. I usually do not have to do it twice.

When I was a kid my father cured my hiccups. Whilst he held a glass of water, he asked me to plug my fingers in my ears. He then held the glass of water and asked me to drink it all as quickly as possible. The hiccups disappeared - but this takes two people.. - Derek

I'm not too sure about that though.. haha =D BUt it seems like drinking water is the only solution that has been passed down for many generations.. As for other methods, i believe it exist somewhere just that we din know about them ^_^ BUt why would u think that he did it on purpose?? haha =D If he wants to distract the class, he can be doing other things instead.. lol =D While hiccup can lead to serious consequences if it's not treated correctly..

Hey ronaldinu~ I have read so many different supposed "cures" for the hiccups and have tried some of them and still have not found any that work! I did read one that I haven't tried yet. It said that you put sugar or salt on a spoon and swallow it! It said something about the dry granulated texture that will stop the hiccups. Like I said, I haven't tried it myself, but found it on a medical information site!

Hi ya ronaldinu I have a great cure for them that works nearly every time. You need to put your fingers in your ears, hold your nose then take a deep breath in and hold it for as long as you can. Then very very slowly let your breath out. If it doesn't work then it is because you either haven't taken a deep enough breath, not held it long enough or let it out too quickly. I never have to do this more than twice! It works for me anyway even though I look a fool doing it!

I am not sure if there is any real sure, I know each family had there own theories. My family has always told me to hold my nose while drinking a glass of water. I have heard so many different ideas such as breathing into a paper bag, just golding your breathe, standing on your head, having someone come behind you and scare you, hold an ice cube covered in salt in your left hand, and even spreading butter on your palms. I am not sure if any of them really work of if they just go away but hiccups can be very annoying.

Personally, I drink ten swallows of water on one breath and that generally does it. There are lots of other ways that people suggest. It is a matter of getting the muscles to stop spasming.

I remember my dad had hiccups continuously for days and nights together and he would be worn out man. It saps up all your energy. Nothing worked acatually. We tried n no. of things, but all in vain. After many many days and medecines, the poor man got respite. It is really bad when it comes and reufses to go. I pity all those who get regular hiccups, for Ive seen them at their worst first hand.

If you drink water upside down, it's a sure cure. It's rather messy so you might want him to get a glass of water with a straw then bend down so his head points to the floor. Then have him drink from the straw. I've never known this method to fail!

The only thing I do to cure hiccups is to take 7 small sips of water, it works for me, how, I don't know, but it does. Another thing they say is to have someone scare you, I've tried that one and it didn't work for me, the seven small sips of water does.

Hiccups can be very annoying. I have had them for hours at a time until I felt quite physically tired! A friend of mine mentioned that taking an antacid can sometimes help, preferably one that has magnesium with its ingredients. Magnesium can calm the nerves apparently; I was told to take it while I was pregnant to calm my nerves as I was feeling a tad irritable (LOL)! It makes sense that it would calm nerve endings and may settle hiccups. Worth a try.

Hi, ronaldinu. What I do is take a big gulp of water and belch. If I cannot get hold of a glass of water, I take a big gulp of air and belch. Works all the time for me. That does not work with my husband, however, because he does not know how to belch. What he does is lie down and relax. The hiccups either disappear after some time or he falls asleep and it stops. I guess there is no exact cure for hiccups. Have a nice day!
