How well do you know your neighbor(s)?

How well acquainted are you with your neigbors? How are your relations with them, perhaps just in passing? I live on the top floor of my apartment building, so I have three other apartments on my level. The one right next to me is now empty. She moved out a little while ago, and she was definitely the neighbor I knew the best. So...?

Hey Ambie! I live in a Garden Apartment Complex which means all apartments are attached in the back and in the front entrances there are 4 apartments per door! My "building" is ok. Pretty quiet. But, next building they are all psycos and unfortunately I can hear everything because they are attached bedroom to bedroom with the 2 worst psychos! One is a "ho" who has been here for 29 years (a 54 year old ho) and the other is a mentally ill wacko who used to be a friend who stole things from me! Lovely place to live! I now try to ignore everyone! I speak to the neighbors that live in my "building" only! I have my girlfriend across the street and few people who also live in the Complex that I talk to. But, basically I just try to BEWARE OF WACKOS!!!

I used to live in a different part of my current building. You may remember all the trouble I had with that apartment, complete with flooding sinks. I had a neighbor there that was a complete and total wacko. I never knew when the wacko would get even worse because he'd get high. I'm sure you have had the same experience.

A couple of them I know very well....one does all my snow removal and lawn work....one watches my house for me as he is disabled....so if something were to go wrong I could count on him to know who did what....across the street are two rental houses....and they come and go like the flu...so I know most of them pretty well....I guess I could count on any of them if I needed something.

Kind of pathetic, but everyone here in my building pretty much keeps to themselves, and while not unfriendly aren't chummy either. So yes, if I bump into some of my neighbors I might "chat" about something with them but that's pretty much the extent of it--like I said, kind of pathetic, right?

With New York being so large, isn't that common?

Yup--so much for city living right? can't figure which is worse...city living where neighbors don't really know each other well, or country/town type living where everyone gossips about each other..LOL

We just moved here just over a year ago but really like our neighbors. The last neighborhood we lived in for 6 years and it was good when we first but then the year before we moved there was a lady, her husband, daughter, and her grandchild that she adopted as her son and at first they were fine but then I think she got bored with her life and started to make problems for the people in the neighborhood. Where we live now it is so much more quieter and we also have a bigger yard. The neighbors here are all older than us and so nice..one has been friends with my mother in law for around 45 years. Almost all of the neighbors here own their houses and have for many many year and while I know that we could still get a neighbor like our last one they at least won't live to close and the chances are slim because of everyone owning.

I just moved into my new house about 3 weeks ago and to be honest I have never met either of my immediate neighbors. Two doors down is a lady that used to work with my sister, so I have technically known her for about 8 years. I don't really know her all that well though. I live on a very quiet street and you very rarely see anyone outside at all.

hi ambiepam well Iknow one is named celia as she is also one of my tablemates, and the other one I dont know her name but she always smiles and say hi when we meet in the hall. Celia is another story , she is the most odd person I have ever met, she is homely but that would not bother me, its her personality.she stares holes in me at the dining table but will not open her blasted mouth. we ask her if she would like the food we do not eat and oh my does she,.but say hi to her and she mutters hi but try to talk to her, its like talking to a stone wall. she does not respond at all. She does not appear shy so what is with her? I think she was one of the homeless that managed to get social security and SSI as she hoards food, she puts half of what is on her plate into a plastic sack. I feel so odd not talking with her but I have been rebuffed too many times now.

She does sound mentally ill. And being a hoarder is a mental illness as well.

I live in a small, small town (more accurately, a village). We have only about 200 families here and you get to know everyone. For most of us our families have lived here for generations. My family came here in the mid to late 1800's. Everyone knows everyone here. Lately though, as the older folk are dying we are getting more and more new people, eventually, if they stay in town, they'll be as familiar as our own families.

We live in a house in suburbia and although we get along well with our next door neighbours we don’t socialise with them or anything like that. We live on a corner so we have neighbours only on one side. We used to get along well with the folks across the road but they’ve moved out recently and the house is currently vacant. I hope the next family that moves in is easy to get along with! It would be nice to have a new family with kids because my daughter doesn’t really play with any children in the street as they are all much older.

I don't know my neighbors well. I also live in an apartment building. The old man in front of my apartment is the brother of my landlord. The next apartment belongs to a diamond dealer. That's just about all I know about my neighbors.

At my old house, I knew ALL of my neighbors pretty well. The area was full of older people who were retired/disabled. All very nice and ALWAYS chatty. It's kind of weird that since I've moved out & have been renting the place out, I still visit my old neighbors every month when I collect rent and they always tell me about whats going on in the neighborhood and things. Apparently, they dont talk to my tenants. I find that weird, because I couldn't get them to leave me alone. Getting out of my car & into the house took a minimum of 20 minutes due to people trying to chat! lol My new house. I've talked to the neighbor directly across from me twice. She's talked to my boyfriend a few times and borrowed a tool here and there. That's about it. There is a parking lot to the right of our house & to the left we have a neighbor who is an old Arabic lady who doesn't speak english and keeps to herself. We haven't met any of the other neighbors on the block either. Just the lady across the street, but I don't even know her name! lol

My hubby knows the one on each side better than I do. He is flat out friendlier than I am. He has work connections with one, and does car stuff with the other. I would not know the one if I saw him, as he keeps to himself, and I work all the time. The other guy I know when I see him and we are fairly friendly.

Hi,again Amber, My parents and I live in an apartment that shared by the colleagues of my father ,that is to say all of the neigbors I know well, except there are some moved out ,and rented their house to others ,this is just the case with my neighbor I think the relations with them is much more intimate .I remembered when they lived here ,my parents always shre delicious food with them ,every new year we went to each others house, chatting ,playing .....In this chinese New Year ,perhaps Molly has to stay at home with parents only since almost all of the good neighbors moved out to other places because of the education matters of their children. Molly:)

I don't know any of my neighbors yet, well, I just actually moved into this side of town and still trying to get acquainted in my home, but none of my neighbors I know. None of them really stopped by either to say hi. Only one lady I saw in our laundry mat that we have on the property. I live in a duplex and there are many duplexes on the property. I have one on the side of me and one behind me then there is one a ways from me. I'm not sure that I'd like to meet some of my neighbors, but I don't know we'll have to see.

I must admit I don't know much about my neighbors. I would say hi once in a while, but I I haven't engaged in any conversations with them. My kids though have no problems with the neighbors. Sometimes, I would get home with a lot of kids in my house, which I learn are neighbor's kids. They would play Wii games at home for hours, but I don't know their parents.
