My neighbors aunt died and they are cleaning out the house. Yesterday her husband comes over with a big box...and I mean big box of jewels. These are glass jewels she recieved from special offers. They are cut with the intention of putting into a setting of a ring or something as the back of the gem is pointy. I have never set anything like a ring..I can use the gems in the center of flowers on my cards but it almost seems like a waste to use them that way. Any good ideas as what to use them in or for? They are different sizes but look like they should be set in rings.

I know how much you like to work on scrapbooking. Is there any way you can use the jewels on special pages of your project(s)? Might add a little extra sparkle to your pages. Have fun with the jewels whatever you decide to do with them. Your very creative mind can surely find a nice place for them.

They are pointy so I think it might be hard to do...however I went to stamping club the other night and we have it at a scrapbooking store and the lady who owns the store showed us how they made necklaces out of washers....You cover them with pretty paper....sand them down and add some kind of glaze over it....I am thinking I might be able to put a gem on them when I cover it with the glaze.

I saw those washers at a craft fair and they are pretty. Also interesting to see what other crafters did with bottle caps.

Can they be made to fit on a charm bracelet? That way each gem can be used together and yet their own beauty could be preserved

I hope they can be....I got a bracelet from my grandfather the last Christmas he was alive and I lost the ruby that was in it....I hope I can replace it with one of these.

If they are glass, you could set then in resin and make jewellry that way, or if they are glass, you could set them in home made clear soap with some glitter (princess soap?) or you could set them in polymar clay and make something that way.

if those those gems are small then you can use it for your dresses . just sew it lightly to your dress in a good design will give you a beautiful look. or u can decorate it to your jewel box, wallet, sandles or you can make it to necklace or chain.

With some polymer clay like Sculpey III you can make all kinds of things: beads, buttons, jewelry, etc., and use the jewels to decorate those. I don't know how big these are--if they are tiny you could get some small grommets and use those to set them in clothing or shoes. (The nice part is that when it wears out you can take them out and reuse them!) You could also get some inexpensive jewelry findings and set them yourself with a small set of jewelry tools (here they sell the set for about $5).

If you really feel that rings are where they belong then I suggest asking a smith to have them done and probably just sell them or something. I can't really think of any other place to put them either as I am not accustom to such things, but I hope you could figure a better way for it. Sorry I couldn't be of much help now.

If you are considering mounting the "jewels", go to wwwfiremountaingems and ask for one of their free catalogs. They carry ready made settings for rings, pendants and earrings. If you are more artistically inclined, you might consider their Art Clay set. You make the object you want from the clay and then burn the clay out leaving behind a totally silver jewelry item. Also you could make beads out of Fimo or Sculpty clay and then press the gem into the clay and remove it while you're baking the bead in the oven. When the bead comes back out you can glue the stone into the spot. You can make a lot of beads and make them into necklaces etc. Fimo and Sculpty clays are available through your craft store and aren't over priced. Before you do too much with them though, check and make sure that they are glass. I am watching a program on people who are suddenly rich by finding things that are valuable when others think that they are worthless. Also, if you don't want to do craft stuff with the beads you could sell the box of jewels. But I look at it as inexpensive gifts for family and friends.

These would be great to use for costumes, like for a theater or a play. Back when I taught dance at church, we also made props and one thing I made for the little ones were crowns, but I bought cheap jewels at the hobby store for that. But for someone who wants a more professional look, you can turn these gems into many things for props. Unless these are real, they are not real are they? If so, then I have no idea other than to sell them, a jeweler would be interested in perhaps./.

They are glass...but look real! I checked out the jewelry store whose name was on the little packages they came in....if they were real I would give them back! But I would love to do something different with them!

You could use them for decorating just about any surface. Cover the surface with a thin layer of squashy self hardening putty type stuff and just press them in. You could combine with shells or beads or other hard objects and make some very pretty items. Small wooden boxes or picture frames come immediately to my mind but i'm sure there would be loads of applications.

Just keep them as before long someone will give you an idea of what to do with them or you will come up with something yourself. I honestly have no idea. completely clueless

Do you ever sell on E-bay? Go in and look up using the key words craft, gems, jewelry, etc. It sounds like you will have a long relationship with E-bay if you do. A good camera will help sell them. Use a piece of black felt (which I'm sure you already have) and scatter on it the amount of gems that you would sell in a bag. Place in the sunshine and snap away. I like to look at examples of other sellers items, like mine, to see how they do it before I make a decision. This is the best way I know to get the most from a find like you just got handed in your lap! I'm jealous! Have fun!

What about decorating candle holders with them? Or making Christmas (or other holiday) decorations? I'm seeing in my mind, a jar lid covered with bright paper or fabric then decorated with small jewels in the shape of a Christmas tree for a special ornament. An Easter egg would work, too.
