I wonder what Ann Landers would say...

Well, I probably know. You know, those advice columns sometimes have some pretty silly discussions, like "should the toilet paper be hung so the end is over the roll or under it?" Well far as I'm concerned, as long as it's hung up, I'm happy. Or "should the toilet seat be left up or down". Well, I'm in favor of down because it looks nicer, also to keep the pets from drinking out of it. But it's not a huge big deal either. But on the subject of the lid being left up/down, my sister had a funny story to tell me. Have you ever seen a public restroom that even HAD toilet lids? Well her office does. And apparently there's one woman in the office who feels that she's doing everybody a favor by leaving the lid down. Well you know how germy public restrooms are. Would you really appreciate having to raise the lid? I guess I'd use a paper towel to do it, but really, this is one situation where I don't think leaving the lid down is the best choice. But then I'm a potty pooper... Oops, pun alert...

I would prefer it up....yuck! I can't imagine what's all over the seat. I see now where they have these things that they hook on the bottom of the door so you can open it with your foot....no touching the handle anymore!

Well, I guess that helpful lady can just run around in her own little delusional world and assume she is doing favors to people. I guess I always thought the up or down pertained to the part we actually sit on, not so much the lid. Some advice is pretty good though, and I have a couple of Ann Landers gems that I still rely on.

When we moved in I decided to buy a shelf thingy that is supposed to fit over the top of the toilet. Unfortunately my toilet is sort of oblong.. so the lid will not lift all the way as the shelf is sort of low and the lid knocks into it. So, since it's a wire shelf, we sort of positioned it so the lid is partially between 2 wires, holding it up indefinitely.. we can never put it down. The drawback to this is the boys cannot lift the seat and leave it up while they use the potty.. because the shelf prohibits this. This means they must hold the seat up while they go, along with holding their shirt out of the way, and aiming. My younger boys have not gotten the hang of this yet.. and mostly tend to forget about lifting the seat. granted even if the seat were able to stay up on their own the younger boys would probably still forget to do so.

I worked in a office building one time and the bathroom was always kept very clean. I remember that a new office opened and one of the ladies was really a hoot. She would come down occasionally to visit a minute or to say something to one of us and she always had a paper towel in her hand and used it on the door and kept it in her hand all the time she was there. I saw her ballet in the bathroom one day and got a good laugh too. SHe would grab a papertowel when she came in, open everything with it, and take a fresh one when she left. Her little ballet step from the bathroom stall to the sink to the trash and then to the door was halarious. I am all for clean but I just don't go that far.

Hello, Dawn. How enlightening that you are taking time to discuss with peoples what is best way to be utilising toilet paper. This is thing everyone must know, and it is wonderful that peoples on MyLot, which is best site on whole internet is going to explain to other peoples what is best way with toilets. I am now inspired to give humble opinion to all my beautiful friends on MyLot, which is best site on internet. Toilet paper - which is best thing for wiping butts in whole world - must hang with end over top. This is so that paper runs smoothly, but more importantly, so that wonderful friends do not snag paper, so putting finger through and risking thick coat of brown nail varnish. This is not desirable or beautiful. As for lid, peoples must leave it up, even if wonderful friends are so concerned to save esteemed colleagues from germs which are not wonderful escaping into air. I shall humbly explain why, to all my wonderful friends on MyLot, which is best site on internet. When peoples is in great hurry to lay cables, it is well known that precious seconds can be saved by pulling down esteemed undergarments and reversing into most welcome toilet. However, if lid is down, peoples who are reversing to save precious seconds do not see this. Then that which should be goind down the pan goes all over lid instead, and if peoples do not notice in time, they may sit in this. This is not wonderful or beautiful - indeed it is most messy and very smelly. Thank you, esteemed friend Dawn who is respected member of wonderful site of MyLot which is best on internet. If you or other peoples are wanting to know any more aboit toilets, please be asking humble self, who will be overjoyed to be helping esteemed friends on MyLot, which is best site on internet.

You probably only posted this discussion to use your "potty pooper" line, you fraud you. It's actually more hygienic to have the seat down because of all the nasty bacteria within and all over the interior of the loo...there is less chance of germs spreading if the lid is down.

ick! I've heard that if the tp doesn't have a cover, then you should unroll some to get clean paper in a public bathroom but actually LIFTING the lid... we never put them down unless we are sitting on them, and sometimes that can cause an near accident in an urgent moment too of course, we are fe-type-males here

heck if I"m out of tissue and I need to blow my nose and all I have is TP, I rip off the top layer first, in a public restroom I'd probably remove the top inch...

Our toilet seat lid typically stays up. The reason for that being that when my son has to go to the bathroom, he has to go to the bathroom and leaving the lid opened means that there is less laundry that I have to do. That said, we don't have anything in the bathroom right now to hang the toilet paper on, so it simply sits on the back of the toilet. However, when I do find a hanger that I like for the bathroom, it will be over the top because that is the way that it was when I was growing up.

Toilet paper . . . I like it over the roll personally. These days, I'd rather the lid DOWN and locked because baby boy likes to put things in the toilet and play with the water - ick (we never experienced this with my daughter). You know, I never even thought about lids being in a public restroom! Nooooooo, I wouldn't want to touch the lid - not even to put it down. Yes, it's VERY germy in a public restroom - I avoid touching anything in the stalls as much as possible (I try to hold onto my purse too!). Potty pooper - ha ha!

I think for guys it doesn't really matter if the lid is up or down. Because up or down, guys still need to lift something to do a number one. Not to mention some guys never really care about germs on what they touch! Thank goodness for urinals!

The toilet must be clean and neat. Other wise it will fill with bacteria and These microbes can make us sick. The authoritative link i am providing here. http://www.ehow.com/about_6562741_toilet-lid-etiquette.html I also use the towel to open or close it. It is only the healthy way.

Oh gosh yes I would prefer the lid up as this way I can see at quick glance that the toilet can be used. As some will shut the lid and leave a mess and not flush this way I can walk into the stall, quick glance and U Turn right away.. hehehe. I do use tissue and or paper towels in all bathroom areas, with so many not washing their hands after, grosses me out.

I wouldn't worry about the germs as much as I would about the extra time it takes to lift it... Sometimes, especially at work when it may not always be convenient to go when nature calls, that extra three seconds could spell the difference between relief and embarassment.
