Watching TV with a "Flipper."

It is official! My b/f is a "flipper." Every time we watch TV together...if there is a halfway boring moment or a commercial...he is flipping through those channels. The problem is that once he starts flipping..we might make it back to the original show and then again, we might not. I have accused him of being ADD but I think the correct diagnosis would be an overactive thumb He says my psychology class is causing me to analyze him..but this has been going on long before that and I said ADD and overactive thumb then too. I have to be honest here....I hardly ever watch TV with him anymore..lol...I just can't...my mind moves around fast enough without the constant stimulation of changing those channels. SO are you flipper or do you leave it on a station? Have you ever tried to watch TV with a flipper?

That is really exciting... I mean for a change... the Male has the remote I wish dad and bro read this Always been a female territory at my dad's place... And I dont have a Television. Btw, mom can handle 7 channels at a go and she keeps track of almost all her soaps most of which are aired at the same time... Ladies are born with such great powers...

Wow...she is very talented! That is exciting because it is pretty traditional here that the male has remote control At least in my experiences they have. He often goes to the bed room and watches in there. Me and that girls have the livingroom.

That burns me up too. I hate to be watching something and someone just stroll in and change it. It's usually not a pretty sight when that happens. My b/f has a TV in the bedroom and a nice recliner in there for him to enjoy flipping around..lol..me and the girls have a run of the livingroom.

This is a problem that, I'm sad to say, will never be solved. Men "hunt", women "nest". This, unfortunately, is no more obvious than when the two genders are watching TV together. Men are always 'hunting' for a better channel while women find something even semi-interesting and they will stop and 'nest', getting whatever they can from that one channel before moving on. This is a phemonomena that I noticed decades ago and gave a lot of thought to, since it affects almost every male and every female who watch TV. So, it's always better to have two TV's in a house with a man and a woman.

My ex was natorious for flippin'. Used to drive me crazy. I'd get interested in a program and then I would never know if we would get back to it or not. It was as if I wasn't there at all. Funny thing is now I am one. I can't stand the stupid commercials they have on and how many of them there so I am forever flipping through. And I like to flip ahead and see what I want to schedule in for later watching. I watch my own tv in my room so it isn't like I am bother anyone else.

He always addresses me and says...hmmm..let's see what the score is on this game or Hmm..I wonder what is on Spike or whatever...LOL. He has actually tried to do better when I'm watching with him but he is still a flipper at heart. He usually watches TV in the bedroom too. I flip if I'm bored and there's nothing on too but he is almost constant..lol. Thanks for responding...I'll know what to expect if we watch TV together

I think it was a Seinfeld joke that men are more interested in what else is on then what is on, while women like to watch a program to it's completion. It doesn't make much sense but..... I remember when I had a TV with many stations. I was constantly checking to see what else was on.

i don't have this habit, but my youngest brother has it. He always liked to change channels during commercials and we end up missing certain parts of the show we were originally watching, so it was quite irritating to me. However, since the advancement of video streaming on the internet, i've hardly watched tv as internet videos don't have commercials and can be played back anytime i want. So this issue of "flipping" hardly affects me now.

Oh...I hate it when we do finally make it back to the program and it has been on for a minute I never know what I've missed..lol. I think that DVR's and computers have helped alot of people get pass this issue. Thanks for the response!

It's a boy thing and most of them do it, I have no idea why. I would just love to have gone in to watch TV with my b/f when he was watching a game and start flipping through the channels the way he does when I would be watching something. I stopped watching TV with him and got on the computer instead...only problem there was, when his game or show was over, I was expected to hand the computer over with a smile because it was "his turn now."

Hi MsTickle! I know what you mean. A few years ago I was fighting for a turn on the computer and I went and got myself a little laptop. I guard that thing with my life. NOONE is allowed to use it. I have something to be selfish with too. I think that just for fun I will grab his remote and start flipping casually this evening when he's watching basketball I'll let you know how that goes. If I am missing...check the basement!

Haha! You are so right about it being a 'boy thing'! I think if it's not sports, or not our favorite team (or worse! something lewd!), we couldn't be expected to sit through one channel. Same with a computer! Where one can open up a lot of windows.

I leave the television on a station and can be irritated by a flipper! But I live alone, so the only one who does it with me, is my granddaughter. She is usually in control of the TV when she is here, and I am usually on the computer, but sometimes I pay attention to something she is watching. It is bad enough that she watches programs that I think don't need to be on the TV, but it seems when I actually get interested in a show, she changes the channel. We might be watching a music video, and then we are watching one of those shows made for teens, then back to seeing if she can find another video she likes. BUT, since she has the remote in her hand, I just so with it and get back to the computer!!

Same with me as far as the getting interested thing...just when I get interested in something...flip...he is off..racing through the channels. I usually don't care unless it is something I have gotten interested in. Thanks for sharing.

Hi JeninTN, I have never of the expression "flipper". But I have to admit that I am a "flipper"..I have the urge to change channel during a commerical..My daughter is an adult and she refuse to watch TV wiht me..But I have watched up to 3 shows atonce by changing back and forth...But being that I am use to watching TV alone it had just become a habit. I can watch 2 shows at once but I sometimes have trouble chewing gum and walking at the same time....LOL LOL LOL

That "flipper" word might be something that someone came up with to describe her b/f I'm not sure it is a widespread word. I can see flipping back and forth like during commercials. The only thing is, we might make it back to the original program and we might not...lol. Thanks for the response!

Oh man, the flipping thing bothers me so much. It's like, hey, this is a perfectly good program, why are you changing it?! But cue commercial break, nope, screw these commercials, let's find something that has a show on right now. It's so annoying, I have to fight the urge to rip the remote away from anyone who does it.

Jen. Jen. Jne. I think that this is a man thing. My husband drives me crazy with this thing. He was so excited when we got a deluxe cable package that has 150 cable channels. My response? Oh great. Then we can watch 1 minute of 150 television shows. Just about the time something catches my interest, he changes the channel. I thought that I was alone until I brought this up in conversaton with a group of girl friends. Every single one of them had the same complaint.

150 cable channels??? With that number of channels I will be the one who will change the channel voluntarily. Here we just have not more than 10 channels but it is more than enough for me to change the channel during the commercial. And I am just an ordinary girl~hehe(^^)

I would find that extremely frustrating too. I'm definitely not a flipper. If I'm watching something, that's what I'm watching. If I get tired of that and want to watch something else, I pull up the guide and pick something and go to it. I never just randomly flip from channel to channel and I certainly wouldn't change the channel without first asking everyone else that was watching TV with me. That's being rude. I will occasionally flip back and forth between a couple of channels if there is more than one thing on that I'm interested in. Usually, it's sports. For instance, I might be watching a football game and flip over to NASCAR now and then or vise versa, but I go back to the original program after a bit. What does your bf do if you're watching a movie? Can he watch the whole thing with you? I can't imagine someone flipping away in the middle of a good movie. I think I'd have to take that remote away and put it...somewhere...

He is more into sports than movies...when we do watch one, he refrains from flipping because I have got mad at him before. He learned that flipping during a movie is a no no.

My ex used to do that and it drove me crazy. I would just start to get interested in a program and he would switch it. He never watched a commercial, so all those companies were spending money for nothing as far as he was concerned. When an add would come on, it was time to switch. I do that alot myself, but only if I am alone. If I am watching tv with someone else, I don't change it, and if I do I ask them first.

Most of my family have that habit and spontaneous act which every time there is a commercial break we will quickly change the channel. So I think everyone in my family agree that we should change the channel and then get back to the previous channel. But when there is a guest at home we usually don't change it.(^^)(^^)

I am a flipper myself! Sometimes I would find myself watching a semi-boring show, and then realize that I was watching another semi-boring show on another channel. That I've gone through a lot of 'flips' that I forgot the original show that I was in. I think it's in the DNA of guys! Unless of course we're watching a game of our favorite sports team.

Since the first time I have DVR about six to seven years ago, I've been putting favorite shows on my DVR list. When I watch any of them, I just fast forward through the commercials. With many people having DVR nowadays, the chances for people flipping channels or flippers as you call it seem to lessen. What could be as worse as flippers is hoggers (could be anything), which people that record lots and lots of shows until there is no space left in the DVR. You may have a DVR or may not necessarily need one. When I don't have anything to watch, I flip through few channels. Usually, I just happen to know or familiar with few channels I flip. Maybe your boyfriend needs to know what to watch.

It certainly sounds like he is bored with the choices doesn't it? I have a DVR in the livingroom that he records some stuff on but I am usually not here when he watches it...I'm not sure if he flips then or not..lol. Thanks for the response.

Hahaha.. really funny experience i think, watching a program television with a flipper. sometime, when i was alone, i was a flipper, i would like to change the channel when i started boring, and when i changed the channel, it needed more than 3 minutes to find another program in another channel. and i often back to the first channel. hehehe.. i would like to watch television alone than with a flipper. i am sure that we will not be able to watch the television well.

Yes..those flippers make it very hard to watch TV sometimes. Sometimes we make it back to the original show and sometimes we never do. It's really tough when you get interested in something and "flip" Thanks for responding!
