I need something to look forward to! Don't you?

Looking forward to something - Avoid depression: look ahead

From my own experience, I think that the difference between me living a normal life, and one filled with a lot of frustration or depression is just having something to look forward to. And I've realized that as I grew older, having this thing or these things (to look forward to) just came harder to come by. Some things are just not as significant, or other things which I found important in the past are not anymore. My big issue is deciding on something to be worthy of looking forward to. Do you have a lot to look forward to? How do you decide if something is worthy of looking ahead? With the mountain of disappointment that we are bound to face in life, how do you find that sliver of excitement and anticipation?

I actually have a lot of things that I look forward to. Some are more long-term things, such as being able to go on vacations and things like that. Some are more short-term things, such as relaxing, playing games, eating junk food and watching movies while spending family time ... I know, that might not sound very exciting, but we do not have a lot of junk food or money to rent movies, so it is something that we look forward to doing. For me, it is more difficult to enjoy the moment. I mean, of course I enjoy the moment when I am doing something that I like to do. However, when I am doing something that is not all that interesting to me, then I have a more difficult time enjoying just being here and being able to do whatever I am doing. Still, these are the times that I will remember later on, especially when they are things that I am doing with a loved one, because they will not be with me forever, and it is surprising all the little things that you take for granted on a daily basis that you will remember when you can't do them together any more.

I've actually bought a couple of bags of potato chips for some movie night with the kids on the weekend. Your response has given me a great perspective as this activity is indeed something to look forward to. Thanks!

So true! But I think looking forward to anything is "worthy" - no matter how big or small its significance is. Everyone needs that little bit of hope . . . it's not so much what you look forward to - it's the fact that you ARE looking forward to something to keep you going. Today, my 6 year old stopped me at the kitchen - "No Mom, I'M going to get breakfast myself" - and she poured out her own cereal for herself and her 2 year old brother. They were both eating at the table together, having a conversation about Mario Brothers and other stuff - basically entertaining themselves. As much as I love my little ones being little, I actually look forward to their independence and growing up. And after I had to clean up their fantastic milk and cereal mess off our table, I KNOW this is something worth looking forward to - ha ha!!

This reminds me of the many 'significant' (according to them) conversations that my 11-year old and 5 year old have. It is also usually about games (this month, it's Castle Crushers on the xbox). Them growing up and being independent, could definitely be something to look forward to. Thanks!

The lady with the horse has been riding since she was a baby! she is from Seattle. Ben was so impressed she got the first impression rose! As for Grandma? She fell for Ben And Wanted to introduce her granddaughter to Ben.Ben was surprised to see her but was his gentleman self. And then The granddaughter came out. She is Tall Blonde And stacked!Grandma stayed a while and then she went home! granddaughter got a rose!

Actually, when I saw some scenes on TV, it showed the Grandma talking as she was being interviewed (couldn't hear what she was saying, as I had the volume down), and then I saw her name(?), and then her age. My first thought was, was she one of the candidates/contestants?!

I think that even though it's harder to find something to look forward to in other personal things, sports is one area that I don't have trouble with. Now if only my team won all the time, and it would so much easier. The Bachelor?! Don't watch it, but saw some excerpts on TV. What's with the horse and the grandma?

on the contrary being older, you were alive during historical events, or even experienced them, and younger generation can only read from the news or books or someone else's story :) while they are just starting to build retirement or work experience, you are way ahead :) I have been through many things I only share with counselors and healers the only reason I'm still alive today is because I choose to appreciate life and I will enjoy it to the fullest until it's time to leave that said, I allow my curiosity takes me to things and people I can learn something from :) there is always something to do, someone to meet of course I have to go within budget but it still means I always have something to look forward to :)

I guess that's a way to look at it. For people who are older. A retirement could be something to look forward to, specially if all children have their own lives and we know that we've done a good job in raising them. Glad to hear that you 'choose' to appreciate life. I think I'm not there yet. Although I'm not on the other extreme, I still find days where it's a bit harder to decide on something to look forward to. Thanks for the response.

I think as you get older you realise that some of the things that you used to think were very significant aren't really. But you also realised what the truly important things are. That's hearing the laughs of our children, holding hands with a loved one or the dawning of a new day. And the really great thing about these important thing is that we can experience them time after time.

Thank you for this response. Yes, although we find that a lot of things grow insignificant as we get older, we do appreciate a lot more simpler things. And you've given me a few great examples that I shall put on my list (in case I forget, or get down). Hope your 2012 has been great so far!

I think that having something to look forward to is important. It's easy to get in a rut sometimes though because there comes times when we stop and ask ourselves exactly what it is anymore. I like to try new things. That's part of what I look forward to. I also like to broaden my knowledge. Most of it might be worthless..but I have a thirst for it. I also try to simplify the things I look forward too also...kind of like those resolutions I told you about. I look forward to beautiful days and the way the sun feels on my face. There is a key to that though...you have to take time to do it. I know that there have been a lot of times I have missed a beautiful day because I was covered up with things to do.

Exactly! If we can come up with a few things that we could look forward to, albeit simple things, then we don't have time to be in a rut. Or we can easily get out of it if we are stuck, because there is the 'next' thing that we anticipate. Thanks Jen.

As they say, life is what you make it. Sometimes to get through you just have to create something to look forward to. To get through the work week I look forward to the weekend. To get through a tough financial time I look forward to next payday. Sometimes it's as easy as looking forward to bedtime each day, LOL.

The problem with me is that I sometimes can't bring myself to think that this 'thing' (that I should be looking forward to), is significant enough. But I know what you mean about getting to bed. There are just days that bedtime is way more significant than others. Thanks kat!

I hear ya, I don't find much to look forward to anymore. I guess when our children were growing up, we look forward to them growing up and achieving things. We looked forward to each achievement. We looked forward to getting married, having a family, building a home, celebrating events in life. Now that we accomplished all of that, there is not that much to look forward to anymore. Right now I look forward to the days where my hubby doesn't go to work until 2 pm in the afternoon, so that we can go for a ride, shopping, etc., so we can't just spend a bit of time getting out of the house. The phone doesn't ring like it did years ago. Letters rarely come in the mail, etc. I guess we have to make ourselves some plans and look forward to doing what we planned.

Darn! You just painted a bleaker picture of my future! I guess when my kids are old enough to move out, it would be even harder for me to look for something/anything to look forward to. But, I can't say you're not right either. Thanks.

I guess when you get older you will look forward to watching your children get married, start their lives, have their children, enjoy your grand children and watch their them succeed. You will help them celebrate their accomplishments and watch them grow, plus babysit for them and spoil them. Then it is on to retirement. If you saved enough for it you can enjoy your years and travel, etc. I guess the picture could be bleak, guess it all depends on how bright you paint that picture.

I do think that it is important that we have something to look forward to in order to have a life that is a happy life. Right now, there are a lot of things that are going on in my life that are difficult, but I do know that there are a lot of things that myself and my entire family has to look forward to this year. The main thing that I'm looking forward to right now is our tax return and the reason for that is because of the fact that we will be able to pay off all of our credit card debt when we get our tax return and that means that we won't have to struggle on a monthly basis in order to make ends meet.

I guess our tax return is one of the things I could look forward to, also. I think I already know how much it's going to be as it would be the same as my last year. And I even know when it's going to. Hope your 2012 is great year, specially healthwise (hubby). Thanks for the response.

Hi sweetie. Looking forward to something actually have to make you feel extremely excited. For me it does actually. I have a lot to look forward to. I'm like a damn five year old, cannot wait. I'm literally jumping up and down, mom thinks i'm nuts or something. Anyhow, just let your mind go, it will come to you, to make whatever it is worthy to you. Now, get the vodka i am so freaking thirsty.

I guess the weekend and a bottle of vodka can be qualified as something to look forward to. You really got me curious about that thing you're waiting for. I wish I had something that could also cause me to jump up and down. Pogo stick?

We are looking at possible outcomes? We can always find something to look forward to. A vacation for example might be it. However, we understand it can be costly so we think about how much we need to save. That can set us back and so we reconsider and that might be the deal breaker. Finding something else is the challenge? You have the ball.

The financial implication is most of the time the big hindrance to making something significant enough to look forward to. When you realize that you really don't have enough, it just pulls you down. Thanks for the response.

Yes I am looking forward to a lot of things. I have been looking forward of that thing for some years already but somehow it failed to happen. But I think it is better to still believe and anticipate that it would happen anytime soon if we are still willing to get what we want to in life.

I think it's great that you remain optimistic on whatever that is that you're looking forward to. Sometimes life can bring us down, and we might not always get what we want. But as long as we remain hopeful, then it might happen. Thanks for the response.

everyone faces difficulty found in this life and do not found patience to follow all of them. sometimes they lost every thing then this word came into play" everyone has some thing to look forward, life is all about moving on, its about passing one hurdel then another then another.

Hello jaihobalodiji1. You are so right that we must pass one hurdle to another, but we always wish that life isn't just like that. That there are some good things to look forward to, aside from just passing through difficulties. Thanks.

Of course we need to look forward to something. This will motivate us everyday. For me, I always look forward to having my own business. That's my goal. I want to be my own boss! :)) With this goal, I can strive harder everyday. As a university student, I want to do better in school everyday. :)

Hello bjcelyn. I guess we have different perspectives. I've already gone through university. And I have a career, and have started my own business already. I think it's easier for you because you're at the starting line. Harder for me, after all these years. Thanks for the input.

i think we all need something to look forward to, or we start feeling a little bored until we go through a time in our lives we have a lot of grief and heartache we suddenly realize just have peace and tranquilty is sometimes enough and then maybe just a feww little things to look forward is good.

I think I can deal with 'just getting bored' if we don't have something to look forward to. The problem is when I get bored, the mind becomes an adversary. It would get negative thoughts, that most of the the time lead to frustration. Or worse, to depression! Thanks for the response.

I have family members that live at some distance. I look forward to seeing them. This week I am looking forward to my first paycheck from my new job. I look forward to returning home when I have gone on extended visits. I actually think I look forward to shorter trips more than long ones, and they have said that the anticipation is just as beneficial as the actual event. I would agree that people need things to look forward to, and it is harder as they get older.

Hello GG. I think getting a new job for the new year is one of those 'things' that we could really consider as something to look forward to. Maybe after I get tired of working, and have had a few years of retirement, I would also find me a job so I could have something to anticipate again. To go in cycles to keep my mind busy (and not depressed). Thanks.
