I Was Burglarized Yesterday

I had gone to the Paso house on Tuesday night and worked there until about 9 trying to spiff up the living room, family room, and kitchen because we were supposed to meet someone there today to collect a deposit on a rental. He had to cancel because of having to work a double shift. Meanwhile, I had a meeting tonight and afterwards I went over to that house because I needed to get some books I was storing there to fill an order. I think I've mentioned in the past that I store a lot of my book inventory there. When I opened the front door, I first thought there might have been an earthquake in that part of town I hadn't heard about, but on a closer look, I saw that the pictures on the floor had been taken out of their frames. In the kitchen, all the cupboards and drawers were open. So were the refrigerator and freezer doors on the side-by-side and the package of ice cream had been opened and left on the kitchen floor, along with other stuff that they had shoveled onto the floor. They didn't want it, but they wanted to make sure all the food would spoil. They only took the 2-pound jar of my favorite chocolate, which hadn't been opened yet. There was also a peanut can in the kitchen -- a large one I'd eaten most of. They took about a cup of peanuts and scattered them all over the carpet in the family room. They had opened every drawer and cabinet in the dining room, but at least they didn't throw the China and serving dishes around and break them. They left the kitchen pretty intact, too. I don't even want to talk about the bedrooms and office where I store books. They pretty much overturned every drawer in the master bedroom and dumped the contents on the floor. They also dumped the contents of about half my boxes of books and photos on the floor. The police couldn't even get in there, so they gave me permission to put some of the photos and slides scattered on the floor back in their boxes and to move the empty drawers and contents out of the way to clear a path. Fortunately, after not finding any valuables or drugs, they must have decided all the boxes contained clothes or books or paper stuff that was uninteresting to them, so they didn't bother with the clothes closet. We were fortunate that they didn't find the only things in the house that might have been valuable if they had understood their value. They did get at the two computers and mess them up. They dismantled the laptop and threw the tower and desktop monitor on the floor in the office. They were both obsolete Windows XP models about six years old. I suspect they took the hard drives, so I'd better call my banks and credit card companies tomorrow. They threw the keyboard and other peripherals around the room. It will be quite a job cleaning all this up, but I've needed to sort through it all anyway. This just puts the pressure on to do it now. I have no idea what, if anything, besides my hard drives, a music box collection, and some custom jewelry, I might have lost. Except for one hard drive with important data, nothing they took means much to me. It could have been much worse. I could have walked in on them and gotten hurt. I was spared that. Have any of you been robbed or burglarized? How did it affect you? I feel violated, but not as much as if they'd torn up my photo albums and destroyed my memories of loved ones who have passed on. Since I don't really live there, my personal space was not as violated as if they'd broken into where I live. I've actually been wondering if I'd be hit, since there have been burglaries in our city frequently these past few months. I have to get the door they broke down fixed, and the police say I need to get a timer for lights. They also suggest I get a neighbor to park a car in my driveway.

I went through the same experience two years ago. The house where we used to stay and where my kids grew up was stripped off its contents. I was staying in other parts of the town but come back once in a while to see the house as I was still having all my belongings there. I intended to move them to my new house once the house is completed. I did not check my house for about six months and when I finally went to see my house, I was shocked to see my house almost empty of its contents. They carted away my big oven and the mixer and all the electrical goods including the ceiling fans. I think they were trying to take the safe but was too heavy so they only managed to move it to the living room. Though there were nothing precious in the house but most of the things stolen were of sentimental value and their lost has erased some good memories attached to them.

I'm sorry you lost so much that was irreplaceable. It's expensive to have to replace the appliances and fans, but I'm sure the sentimental things hurt the most. My mother-in-law was robbed when she was in the process of moving here. She wasn't quite still completely mentally all there (she had cancer) and she made bad decisions. She packed all her jewelry in a case and my husband wanted her to bring it, but she thought it would be safer left at her house and insisted on leaving it. It was conveniently packed to go when the thief broke in. It was the mailman who thought something looked suspicious and called us. Her home was much bigger than mine and they had also emptied all the drawers and closets. She had moved about half her stuff, but not all the valuables, and the thieves got it. it's a violation however it happens and whatever is taken.

I am very grateful I didn't walk in on them. Maybe they had been waiting for me to leave. They may have been watching the house and knew I didn't stay there all night.

It's been a long time ago, but someone walked into our home and took my wallet that was on the dining room table while I was upstairs. I understand the feeling of being violated, but it was nothing like your experience. To deliberately tear and scatter things to make a mess takes an angry and immature person, just the kind you don't want to run in to! Thank heavens you weren't home.

It wouldn't surprise me if these were kids that live in the neighborhood and realized that the house is empty most of the time. They probably know when I'm usually there. They may have even been waiting for me to leave. I don't know if they broke in at night or during the day. I'm just glad I didn't have the pleasure of meeting them there. I hope they aren't the same kids I pass when I'm walking down by the river or around the neighborhood. It makes me feel creepy to think that people I say hello to may be snickering after they see me on account of what they did to me. It's more likely, though, that these are the same thieves that have been hitting other houses. The police seemed to think they fit the pattern of other recent robberies. I would like to believe these kids don't live in my neighborhood.

I haven't been burgled myself, but I know people who have, and they have felt violated and some can't even bear living in the house they once thought of as their home, knowing that a complete stranger has gone through all their private possessions and have violated the sanctity of their home, their home has no longer become a safehold for them, and they don't feel safe. I am so sorry you have had this done to you, the only saving grace is that you weren't there. Most possessions can be easily replaced but you can't.

Thanks for your kind words. I'm also glad I wasn't there. Since this is a second home, I don't feel quite as violated and I haven't lost as much as would be possible if they had hit my first home. I'm still unhappy at the mess and losing a few things that will cost me something to replace, such as a couple of hundred dollars worth of food from the freezer and frig because they left the doors open for several hours. Some foods, that don't have to be kept cold, such as nuts, will survive. I can also salvage the flours. I do all my baking over there. It just seems a shame to have to throw out meat and veggies that are ruined. A lot of clothes that were in the overturned drawers will have to be washed, etc. I'm just glad this didn't happen when my mom was still living here in her old age.

Oh, Barb I am so sorry about this. No, I have never been burglarized, but we live on a main street and we work lots of different shifts and have cars that have moved around the parking spots real frequently. They would be afraid someone would be at home. I bet the mess is awful.

I'm really glad you've never been through this. You're right about the mess. But perhaps this will motivate me to finally finish sorting out all this estate stuff and getting rid of what I don't want and never will want. The need to use the space is urgent, since I may have major surgery by summer or in summer and we may need to live in that house for a while while I'm healing. I know I'll be much happier when the house is functional again. Now I can't help having to go through everything, since everything is on the floor.

I'm so sorry to hear that news Bagarad. I've never worked out why people feel the need to trash stuff.

I'm so sorry. Thank G-d you were not physically hurt! I hope in time you will get back to a normal you can live with. Do you still have my email address? If so write if you need me.

Thanks, Sarah, I was just tempted to jump into one of your discussions, but I don't have the mental energy it takes. Just so you know, although I do enjoy the status quo about some things, I don't like the "new normal" in the state of my country that I'm supposed to get used to. Also, I do think God knew exactly what Adam and Eve would do, but I don't think it was a set-up. Just don't have time and energy to explain the whys today. I have a lot of stuff I have to do in the next month to prepare for possible major surgery, and I'm not spending as much time as usual on line. Thanks for caring.

I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you. I actually came home twice in the early 1980's to find burglars in the house. First time I chased one in the car, he got away - darn it. I've lived in this house for 29 years and only got burglarized once. After that, I had an alarm system put in. I did have a really bad dream after the second time we were burglarized in the other place.

I was living on the "bad side of town" the 2 times I was burglarized and came home on them.

That's terrible, to be hit so many times. I think I would have been afraid to chase a burglar, had I seen one at work. I can imagine this would give you bad dreams. I was too worked up to get to sleep enough to have dreams last night. Maybe that's why I wrote about it everywhere. It helps me heal someone to tell people about it.

That's awful! I don't know what to say. It does sound as if they were looking for something. You're lucky they didn't do more damage.

Yes, several times my storage areas have been vandalized and more recently my summer home. I have not been up there to see if there is damage -- a neighbor went in and locked up as the intruders had left doors and windows open. I'll go up in a month or so and find out.

A lot of us don't really understand how personal home invasion is. It will take you some time to feel comfortable there again. I just learned that salt will take away the negative and the positive energy of a room . Just sprinkle it around the room, make sure you get some on each item, leave it over night and it will absorbe the energy everywhere it touches, then vacumn it up the next day and you should notice a feeling of clean energy. I looked this up and it's an old.old custom to get rid of hauntings. I'd use ice cream salt, it's corse and easier to clean up. I'm going to try it a my house since we are fighting illness here all the time. I think I'll add a little prayer with mine, maybe give it an extra push.

I'll think about that. I'd not heard of this custom before. So far I'm not feeling very haunted -- maybe because they didn't appear to have touched the things most important to me. Prayer always helps.

oh no dear friend how horrible you were burglarized and they turned your place into such a mess cause they didnt find what they wanted. Eventhough you say you dont live there and nothing really valuable seems to be lost its heartbreaking to have to clean up the mess they left behind. You really need better locks in that place and of course where you live.

I really sorry to hear these bad news about you and your home. I think the robbers knew that you were not at home so that they could get into there. It's good that you told the police about the incident. I think you must be very carefully. Take care.

Thank you for your sympathy. I rather think the thieves knew I wasn't home, too. They have pulled off other jobs around the town, and they like to come when no one is home.

Not feeling all that lucky today, but still thankful all that's missing are a few things that have little material value and almost nothing with sentimental value. Probably the damage to the door will be the most expensive thing.

This is terrible, I am sorry it happened to you, I am glad you were not there, but they probably knew this by watching you .
