Barbie goes to the dark side |
Barbie, that favorite doll of girls everywhere is taking a step to the darkside.
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1428128.ece
This new Barbie to be released in September is based on a comic book hero, and is wearing a black leather jacket and boots and black fishnet stockings.
Now I don't have a daughter but If I had one, I would not want my daughter playing with that doll.
Tell me what you think! Would you be buying this. Tell me about your childhood Barbie memories. If you are a collector, would you get this one?

Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | Cute! I think Barbie has sunk to a new low. I am sure some of the collectors out there will want them, but I think more guys will want them or the comic book collectors.
COuldn't they just have made it an action figure?

Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | You child may not have seen anything wrong with it because she sees this as acceptable. Many of us, do not see this as acceptable for a child. What is next Barbie - the dominatrix?

2. danishcanadian (20373) | 1 year ago | Wow!! That's scary. While it was nice to know that Barbie could be anything she wanted, it really sucked that she had sun an un-realistic body. The attire on his new Barbie just brings that out in spades!! What kind of parent would buy such an obious sexual advertizement for their kids?
| |
| |
Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | It is scary, can you see the little girls that play with Barbies wanting to dress like this. She did have an unrealistic body and my understanding is that they have changed her proportions some, but this is too much. WOnder if her belly button is pierced?

oneandonemakesix (24038) | 1 year ago | I am betting more than kids they are targeting collectors and people, probably teenagers, who are into Goth, and definitely collectors,
I think what toy companies are trying to do just like television is that they want to cash in on hte latest fad....its all about the money, Just like McDonald's putting a Chinese slogan for the Olympics in favor of China and only China...comapnies are going to cash in any way they can

Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | I assume that you want it for you?! Some kids never grow up.
I agree, no kid of mine would play with this. I have to wonder what the manufacturers are thinking. We have people screaming about poor Harry Potter, there will be toy burning over this.

4. morgandrake (1443) | 1 year ago | I would not want my child playing with it. There are words to be said about the new look, but I won't print them here. I am glad that I do not collect Barbies; my wife would give me some strange looks if I did; she would also say some things about this one. Not that either of us are prudes; but she is a school teacher, and even we think that there are certain limits to what children should be exposed to.

Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | I tend to be conservative and really wonder about the value of giving them to 2 and 3 year old kids, but this should not be given to kids at all. I have never heard of a male collecting Barbies, but I am sure they are out there.

5. tyc415 (4492) | 1 year ago | I am not sure if I would buy that barbie or not. I would have to see it first before I made up my mind. My daughters had barbie dolls and my mother and I bought patterns and made clothes, boy were they ever decked out. haha They did look real nice though.

tyc415 (4492) | 1 year ago | Shame on me, slap my hand and wash my mouth out with soap. hahaha I just looked at the link you provided and it is nothing what I thought it would look like. I was thinking more like motorcycle riding clothes??? I also have never seen a comic that had a character like that. I love the look of the second one they had on that link. Now that is barbie.

Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | Yes, I learned how to sew on the sewing machine making doll clothes and many of them were scraps of fabric of what I was wearing. Trust me there were no black fishnet stockings or leather jackets in the repertoire.
I am glad you did stop and look at the link. This gave you a better idea of what I was talking about, the second doll was more Barbie-esque. Though she is still a bit out of proportion for a healthy body image.

6. gemini_rose (10121) | 1 year ago | I would buy it, but then I collect certain ones that I find unusual so this would go nicely in my collection. If my daughter go her hands on it, she would not appreciate the clothing on it anyway as every doll or teddy with clothes on gets stripped within minutes! I would not probably buy it for her, but I would buy it for me!
| |
| |
Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | Well I can give you buying it as a collector and not for your daughter. Do you see it an an investment?
| |
gemini_rose (10121) | 1 year ago | Honestly? no, it would just be something for me. I am not weird or anything though, its just that as a child I loved my dolls and hated having to grow up and not be able to have them. I have quite a few unusual barbie dolls and one or two limited editions that I have bought for my enjoyment. I also like things that are a bit different.

7. OreoCookie3 (18426) | 1 year ago | Hi Debs, this Barbie sort of looks like a dominatrix. She is pretty, but I don't think I would want my children (if I had any young ones) playing with her. I am more inclined to purchase the feminine Barbies that are not suggestive. I think if it didn't say S&M Barbie... I wouldn't think so much of it.
| |
| |
Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | She is scary. I definitely would not be giving this doll to my daughters if I had any. One time i was a Barbie that was a doctor, that one I would give. One like this is not one that I think kids should aspire to.
| |
OreoCookie3 (18426) | 1 year ago | You said exactly what I was thinking.
| |
arkaf61 (5729) | 1 year ago | The question is.. you know it looks like a dominatrix, but does your child? She would not think anything about those clothes because she doesn't have yet anything as a reference to what it looks to us. For her it would be just a doll, maybe with strange clothes but a doll. We as adults are the ones that are inferring from what we know, but a child would not.
| |
Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | Kids are smarter then you think. If you watch things like Law and Order and the kids are within distance, they are pretty knowledgeable. They maynot have a fill understanding, but soon enough they will put 2 + 2 together. And if you think of the 10 or 11 year old age group, they know a lot!

8. redyellowblackdog (3986) | 1 year ago | This sounds kind of tame. I remember a company some time back that was sued successfully by Mattel to stop them from buying Barbies and repackaging them. Yes, there was a company buying Barbies and giving them make overs to include brand new boxes and clothes. The names of these 'bootleg' Barbies? Remember, now, they had outfits and packaging to match these names.
"Trailer Trash Barbie" and "Hooker Barbie". Imagine it.

Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | Wow, and to think I missed this one. This is amazing...trailer trash barbie and hooker barbie --- what a world we live in.
I guess Mattel has loosened their standards since 1994.

9. arkaf61 (5729) | 1 year ago | Well, I am not really sure. You see I could give it the dark side meaning you mention, but a child would not. For a child it would be just a doll with different clothes,no darkness attached:) As for my childhood barbie memories they're.... close to nothing, I was one of those girls that didn't have much patience to play with dolls. I would look at them, appreciate how pretty they looked and them throw them into a basket or shelf. Occasionally I would take them out, grab some fabric scraps and make a few dresses - maybe closer to this new dark barbie than the "normal" dresses hehehehe and then throw them back to the basket grab my ball and leave to play ball in the park LOL I am not a collector - of dolls or anything - but if I was I would probably get this one too.
| |
| |
Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | But how many kids would get the idea they want to dress like their new barbie doll. I think this is pretty inappropriate for kids. I don't care if they understand or not - they will want to emulate.

10. thebeaddoodler (2768) | 1 year ago | When Barbie first came out there was a BIG fuss over such a sexual doll especially for little girls, but she soon came to be accepted and loved and collected by girls of all ages. I wouldn't buy this new Barbie for a little girl, but I can see collectors fighting over her.
| |
| |
Debs_place (6721) | 1 year ago | That is true and just a few years ago, they changed her proportions so that young girls would have a more realistic body image.
This is definitely not a child's toy, for adult collectors fine I just hope it stays in the hands of the adults.
