Would You Buy Your High School Teen A Car?

Ido not even drive a brand new car. In fact, the newest I have ever had is a '96. My kids had to share with the rest of the family, and drive whatever was available. It did not hurt them a bit, and they are not maladjusted or anything. Pretty frugal, in fact. They understood the reasoning behind having older cars, and they would not have to afford high dollar insurance that way.

I just have an old Blazer that I got myself, I am 18 and I work very hard for the things I have, and you bet I would not abuse the things I work hard for. When I have children, or more so if I have them, I will not buy them much, I want them to know what the value of money and work is, I want them to have to struggle and appreciate what they have, not become accustomed to getting everything and then when they get out in the real world they won't have much life experience thus I would be having to help them out when they should learn things themselves. I want my children to be independent as I am and I want them to start as soon as they can. Happy mylotting and have a great day or night.

Assuming that I can afford, I wouldn't. Aside from the fact that they're still young too drive, I don't trust the circumstances they'll be in during dring; more so, I don't trust the way they react to such circumstances. happy posting!

No way I would do that. I've seen too many dead and dying teens come through the emergency room doors.. and too many screaming, grieving parents crying because their child is dead or dying due to a car crash. I would not.. I think it is important for kids to grow up and learn responsibility and get their own cars. I don't mind helping them, but they need to put in at least half the effort to get a car if I am to help. I certainly would not even let my 16 or 17 drive a car by herself with no supervision. As a nurse I have seen too much to be that trusting.

No way I would buy my teenager a car like that, even if I could afford it. I will do the same thing my parents did. They told me if I wanted a car I needed to get a job. So I got a job, they drove me to work while I saved money. Then they paid for part of the car, and I paid for part, then I was responsible for paying the insurance and for gas.

Handing it over teaches children that they don't have to work for what they want, and it does nothing to teach them the value of money. Having to pay for it themselves teaches them to save, budget and prioritize spending. It teaches them that if they want something, they have to work for it. It teaches them that not everything comes easy, and to be more discriminating in deciding what is a 'want' and what is a 'need.'

No way! I definately will not buy my teenager's car. My parents made me pay for my first car by myself, and I plan to do the same. At the time I didn't really understand it, but it paid off in the long run. I believe I am more responsible and money conscious because of it.

I would not buy a teen a brand new car. My daughter has a job and she is paying for her own. My husband and I could not afford to buy a vehicle for her anyway. she needs to learn responsiblity.

Assuming that I was pretty rich compared to the middle or lower class people, I will never buy my child a car, until the day that he/she will learn to value things, and be satisfied and happy with what she is given. My family isn't that rich, but due to the fact that my dad always wants the luxury items for whatever reason, I ended up driving the Hyunday Sonata 09... yeah.. it's not because I wanted the latest car model, it's really (and honestly) because my dad just wants us to drive the car with latest model, for some reason I can't figure out why. I currently do not have a job right now, and I'm kind of ashamed to say that back in the day when I had a job, I did not learn to value things, and I always wanted to have an expensive and luxurious items, maybe it was because I was surrounded by those kinds of people, or I have been influenced by what I see. But now I'm glad that I am being happy with whatever I have right now.
The fact is that there are many teens who got into the car accident, because they were reckless and irresponsible with their actions, or maybe some of the teens were the victims of the accident. Also, if the teens were keeping up with their lives by having things given to them by their parents, the chances are that they will eventually learn to be more responsible in the later age, and will not really learn to distinguish between the need and want. Let's face it. Do the teens really need the car, even the little cheap and old and used ones from the late 90s? I don't think so, because if they have to go to the work, they can always walk or ride a bike, or have their parents give them a ride, which is how I've been going to work. Obviously, they need to go to the school, but they can always walk or ride a bike, or catch the school bus (what I always hated, so I chose to ride a bike to school by the time we moved to a house like 1 mile away from school).

My son is really a very good student academically. If he continues to do as well as he has done up to this point, then yes, I would probably at least help him buy a car. I look at it like this...if he can get straight As (or close to it), he's likely to get a good amount of money for college. By working hard, I can afford to reward him with other things, like a car.

i wouldnt buy them a car because if i buyed they would use a lot petrol and so much money waste
