Obama's Auntie faces deportation thanks to possible politically motivated leak

It looks like the news reports of Barack Obama's poor Auntie, originally intended to make him look bad, have caused a big problem for her. I do hope whoever is responsible is proud of outing this woman.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama didn't know his aunt might be living illegally in the United States, as media outlets are reporting, and his campaign will return contributions she made, an aide said Saturday.
"Sen. Obama has no knowledge of her status but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws [should] be followed," campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.
According to The Associated Press, a court refused four years ago to accept the asylum application of Zeituni Onyango, 56, the half-sister of Obama's Kenyan father. However, she has continued to live in a public housing complex in South Boston, AP reported.
Onyango's refusal to leave the country would be an administrative violation, not a criminal matter.
CNN has not been able to independently verify her immigration status. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said the agency "is prohibited from commenting on any individual's status."
Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers of Michigan fired off a letter asking Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to investigate whether someone leaked the information to the media in an effort to damage Obama.
"The AP reports that it 'could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved,' a very disturbing (suggestion) indeed," read the letter from Conyers, who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
"This leak is deplorable and I urge you to take immediate action to investigate and discipline those responsible."
The Department of Homeland Security had no immediate response to the letter.
The Obama campaign did not indicate whether Obama has been in touch with his aunt, whom he describes in his book "Dreams from My Father."
The Boston Housing Authority did not return calls or an e-mail from CNN on Saturday.
No one answered calls Saturday to a phone number listed under Onyango's name.
In his book, Obama writes of meeting his aunt when he visited Kenya as a young man.
"A tall, brown-skinned woman was smiling beside us, and Auma [Obama's half-sister] turned and said, 'Barack, this is Auntie Zeituni. Our father's sister," Obama wrote.
"'Welcome home,' Zeituni said, kissing me on both cheeks."
It is not clear when Onyango arrived in the United States.
She told the London Times that she travels back and forth between the United States and Kenya.
"I have been coming to America ever since 1975. I always come and go," the Times quoted her as saying.
Federal campaign finance records indicate Onyango contributed at least $65 to Obama's campaign in July and September, in $5 and $25 increments. Obama spokesman Burton said the campaign has identified $265 in contributions from Onyango, including those not yet reflected in federal filings, and plans to return the funds.
The gifts would appear to violate federal campaign finance law, which prohibits political donations by non-U.S. citizens.
"The responsibility is the campaign's to ensure the funds they receive are from permissible sources in appropriate amounts," Bob Biersack, a spokesman for the Federal Election Commission, told The Times of London.

There seems to be no depth to which they will not sink. Scorched Earth all the way.
Like I said before, this strategy doesn't just need to get beaten on Tuesday--it needs to be PULVERIZED to such an extent that these tactics will from now on be associated with failure, and never be tried again as a result. The country would be far better for it, in my opinion.

I agree. It's sad that this poor woman has been used like this. While it's true that she shouldn't still be in the country, she didn't put herself in the spotlight. She was targeted because of who she's related to and now she has to pay the price.

Let me guess, you're the kind of person who's okay with warrantless wiretapping?

"Sen. Barack Obama didn't know his aunt might be living illegally in the United States, as media outlets are reporting, and his campaign will return contributions she made, an aide said Saturday."
So, once again, Obama can say he "didn't know" and simply return the contribution that he ILLEGALLY accepted.
I also do not understand why everyone is so sympathetic to a woman who was living in the United States ILLEGALLY - living in public housing ILLEGALLY. Plus, if this woman was in such dire straights, how could she afford to give several hundred dollars to Obama's campaign (while living in public housing)!
If you want to feel sorry for her - feel sorry for the fact that her nephew didn't "spread the wealth" to help care for her (or for his brother in Kenya).

I agree, seems to be a pattern:
I did not know she was illegally living here.
I did not know Ayers was a terrorist.
I did not know that Wright was preaching hate.
I did not know that Khalid was a PLO pawn.
I wonder what else he did not know? But for those who fawn over this guy, he can do no wrong. I swear that is the most disturbing part.

If/when he becomes President are Americans going to still sit back and take his "I didn't know" excuse when things go wrong in our country? Will that excuse pacify angry Americans when his socialist policies throw our country into an all-out depression? Will his "I didn't know" excuse work when terrorists are invading our homeland because we withdrew our troops and didn't keep them at bay?
I guess that should also be the excuse for the constantly decreasing definition of "middle class" - I guess he "just doesn't know" what his actual definition is~!~

"I did not know that Khalid was a PLO pawn. "
Is that what McCain said after he gave Khalid's organization 1/2 million?

I am amazed at how far the Obamites will go to make sure that Obama and his family can do no wrong. If someone is in the country illegally, it does not matter if they are related to the President of the United States, they should be deported. If she planned to stay for a few weeks and needed to get a temporary visa, she should have gotten one. We cannot make an exception.
And I suppose that if Obama was not a natural born U.S. citizen, they would have made an exception in his case to allow him to stay as President and then made that law legal from then on.

Suspenseful, I'm not trying to say that the woman did no wrong...I'm saying that what happened to her was politically motivated and that it's a nasty thing to have happen to a little old lady. Yes, she was here illegally...she overstayed her visa...but she was minding her own business, helping her community and became a target because of who she's related to. It's kinda like a mob going after someone on the street because that person is different...different color or different nationality. But, this time the "mob" was the media and people with the ability to investigate someone's legal status. Even though they didn't use a baseball bat to club her, she was targeted and has been hurt in the process.
By the way, suspenseful, your use of namecalling (Obamites) is striking similar to a bunch of other nasty names that people have been called over the years and everyone here who resorts to that is starting to really disgust me.
I'm Irish...want to call me a K1ke instead?
Want to call my husband a W0p because he's an Italian?
Do you also call people n*ggers?
I don't see those of us who support Barack Obama using a bunch of these (not) funny names to refer to those who support McCain on a regular basis but, man on man, do we see the slurs directed at us!

If this was politicly motivated, my question is WHO? Apparently she had some things that weren't to be putting Obama in a posative light. So was it the Obama campaign? Was it the McCain campaign? what possible motivation would McCain have for it? Reguardless of who it was, she was here ilegaly, the law is the LAW.

If Auntie is so poor - how did she have money to contribute to Obama's campaign? Is she also working illegally?

I doubt it was Obama's campaign since she indicated in the original article that she would talk about him *after* the election so there was no threat there. The original article about her focused on the fact that she is "poor" and was spun to make Obama look uncaring and cold. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the slant and it leads right to the McCain campaign. Yes, the law is the law but busting a little old lady is ugly...even for this election. I do hope the leak is eventually discovered because I would like to know "who", too.

The same mud slingers that have all along made an all out attempt to smear Obama's name and character to try and make something stick. That is all they have to bat with. But my belief is that Palin is gonna be the glue that sticks him with the Loser label!
Speaking of which, I have thought on more than one occassion if McCain choosing Palin was his way of bowing out gracefully. Thats the only reason that makes since for him to choose a woman that is politically equivalent to a sack of rocks.

I haven't heard McCain screaming about how the liberal media is beating up poor auntie, like he did about Joe the plumber. Maybe she'll get a book deal and a singing career out of this. I am very open minded about people coming to this country, umm the only true natives of this country are living on reservations currently. Guess the true Native Americans should have deported all the white men.

"Poor Auntie"? They just did want any citizen should have done before - reported someone living in our country ILLEGALLY receiving public assistance from our government ILLEGALLY!

WHO reported her newt? That's the problem with this situation...the one you are trying so hard to ignore...no ONE individual picked up the phone on their own and called ICE to report her which brought her to the attention of the media...it was the other way around! She was the subject of a very slanted smear news report, designed to make Obama look bad but, instead of benefitting financially like "poor Joe the plumber" who had a bunch of fools pay his back taxes for him, it was discovered that she's here illegally so she gets the boot. "Poor" Joe had McCain behind him as he was useful to them and he made out. Obama's Aunt was a target who was of no use to them, so she has to get out.

You conservatives amaze me totally. I have never in my life seen such a group of people that act like children. I cannot believe how it's ok if it's my guy doing it but the other guy better play by the rules. Whatever! It is people exactly like this that have pushed me into NEVER voting for another person that claims to be a conservative.
Sorry spalladino, you are different as well as a couple other.

Do I think this was politically motivated.....yes. But I do think she needs to either get proper permission to stay in this country or needs to leave. She needs to follow the rules just like the rest us.
Looks like it was a bad time for her to be here illegally, living in public housing, and related to Obama.
You would have thought that Obama would have looked into this issue before now. He knew his whole life and all of his family would be looked at. He should have either made sure she had a proper visa or sent her home. Poor homework on his advisor part.

Could you imagine deporting your elderly aunt? I do agree that she needs to follow the law but I don't believe that a political candidate should have to investigate every single relative before or during a campaign. What's next...are they going to go after his sick grandmother?

If they can find dirt on her yes they will. Heck Palins kids are fair game too. I may not agree with it but it is what happens in politics and he knew it going in.
Family needs to be left out of it. Try tell that to either campaign or the press.

Could have easily been her landlord that told or a neighbor who was wanting to get back at her for something.
Obama may not have known her status. Older people often are quiet about such things not making a fuss.

I doubt Obama knew her status and I also doubt anyone in her small social circle had anything against her. She had been a volunteer resident health advocate for the Boston Housing Authority and also volunteered with Experience Corps, a program in which adults over 55 mentor children in their communities. In the interview that outed her she said, “I felt that I should help the children in my community. I love people and enjoy interacting with them . . . Also, I was idle, and this was a chance to get involved.”
She sounds like a really nice lady.

Of course it was politically motivated...Joe the plumber goes to Nashville and Auntie gets to go home. Granted I think that she should be sent home if she is here illegally. But to be quite frank she is no different than a large part of our population, and was under the radar because she was performing in a non threatening manner as a citizen should.
My question would be how did she continue to get in and out of the country without proper documentation, get public housing etc. For me it is just an example of how wrong some parts of our system are and not the petty fact that she is related to a presidential candidate.
The problem that I have is that people expect that he should have done a background check on his entire family, and that somehow this is a reflection on him. Or it seems that some think that he should have "made sure" that she was a citizen before he ran...give be a break! But then the story would be that she was denied citizenship and he made it happen. So either way this mud was gonna sling!

You say that as if she handed him the check in person! Of all the millions of donations that he has had do you think he knows who has given what on a first name basis. He did the best that he could by saying that he would return the funds as they did not meet donation guidelines. The amount was equivalent to less than one percent of what an individual can donate. Lucky her, this amount should go a long way in Kenya.
